So as many of you know, I like to duck hunt. So that has also led me to really enjoy the Duck Dynasty series. Not just for the hunting, but also because its a funny show about a good family with values.

I was just telling my wife though.. "this show wont last. all reality show stars eventually get brought down by the press". Literally two days later... this unfolds.

Remarks about gays prompt suspension of 'Duck Dynasty' star - CNN.com

Now, I vehemetely disagree with his views on homosexuality. That being said, there are millions of americans that share his view (again.. for right or wrong) and I believe that he was speaking off of the cuff.

My personal beliefs is that the GQ writer baited him. He knew he was a christian with strong beliefs, so he peppered him with questions (in a friendly manner, like a snake) until he could get some quotes he could wrap his story around. Essentially throwing the man under a bus for a quick buck.

So this thread is about a few topics.

1) The Phil Robertson situation
2) The eventual downfall of any celebrity via the press
3) Duck Dynasty as a show... because I like it.

Let's try not to make this a gay rights debate. I know that will be difficult, but I am giving the mods a heads up that my desire would be to close the thread if it goes there. I am an optimist and believe that we can have a civil discussion on the topics above.

I just think it's outrageous that it is impossible to express an opinion without some intense blowback. He's entitled to his beliefs, just as others are entitled to disagree with him. Why does everyone always need to get so up-in-arms about it?

Love Duck Dynasty. They are my people and I don't care about how scripted it has become, it's still hilarious.

The Robertson family is very interesting as a whole. Phil was the starting QB at Louisiana Tech, starting ahead of Terry Bradshaw. He also was a terrible alcoholic and very bad husband to Miss Kay at the start of their marriage. He then found Jesus and became the man he is today.

And finally, I hate the media. It tears everything down in a giant mess made out of blowing things out of proportion. Just let people live their live's for God's sake.

He's also against sex before marriage ala the many talks with Sadie and Tyler. I guess pregnant teens should have complained and he could have gotten kicked off earlier.

I think its bullshit. Duck Dynasty fans should boycott the show to send a big FU to A&E.

This Country is going to shit... That is all.

I'm not sure that would help Phil or his family. The show would probably be cancelled if no one watched.

But I agree with the premise.

A conservative Christian is against same sex marriage? I didn't see that coming!

I'm not sure why anyone could be be shocked by his comment, except for the easily offended. I disagree with him, but as they say "opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one".

Basically, the Roberston family isn't going to fold on a basic belief that they share from the Bible.

A&E will kick them off the air and they will command huge salaries on the open market.

He spoke out against all literal sin from the Bible. Unless the catholic church comes out and either rewrites the bible for the 21st century , he's entitled to his opinion.

I don't agree with his opinion but do i respect his opinion? Yes absolutely, the man has a right to believe what he wants.

2 things about duck dynasty

1. Its terrible scripted bullshit reality television

2. You walk into a walmart and you will see more duck dynasty shirts than anywhere else on the face of this earth

Not only was his opinion not surprising, but he didn't even express it in a hateful way. The vagina/anus comparison may have lacked a bit of tact, but he didn't go all Westboro Baptist about it either. And yet the reaction was as if he was damning them all to hell himself.

My Dad taught me how to shoot. He gave me 3 shells for every two hours that I got to shoot birds.

If I gave him 2+ birds, I would get 3 more shells.

Duck Dynasty can go to hell.

I would think they wouldn't care, and I could see them cancelling the show themselves to keep from supporting a network that doesn't support them.

And I don't think they are worried about lost earnings. They were doing fine before the show and will continue to do well long after.

To be honest, I wouldn't blame them for walking away. They have a strong family and have made it clear that their relationship is priority one. So if the show gets in the way of that, they should take the money and run.

We're the losers in that situation.

I don't have a problem at all with him stating his beliefs. I also don't have a problem at all with him,and his family, living what they believe. I applaud him for standing up for his beliefs.

And the media, along with A&E, have tried to make him alter his beliefs and the show so as not to offend anyone. How about picking up the remote and changing the channel if you don't like it.

I think the media likes to tear down people because that is what we the consumers watch. It is why news rarely has feel good stories but is loaded with murders, robberies, car chases, etc. It is also why it is hard to find real news on cable news channels, just a bunch of asses spouting stupid opinions. We watch it/read it, so they go for more of it.

On the positive side, there are few things that the media likes more than a redemption story. We as a country tend to root for someone fighting back from adversity (whether real or created).

I agree that everyone has an opinion and that is fine but when you are a public figure (which he is) you need to be more aware of what you say, and if he doesn't want to then he gets to deal with the consequences.

I agree 100 percent! Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and values. That's what makes our country special. Blasting someone who shared their Christian beliefs is ridiculous. If you have a difference of opinion then so be it, but understand that it's his opinion. Phil also said that he loves people regardless of their lifestyle and he took a stand for his own personal beliefs. I for one, truly enjoy their show and will continue to watch it. The press has a way of twisting things around at times and I think this is a fine example of that. One of the big issues these days is that people are ultra sensitive on touchy subjects like homosexuality and to me GQ knew this and simply spun this story in a way to enhance their readership.

Upon reading this, I had a feeling I knew who the writer was. Took a quick look and turns out I was right. It's the same adolescent whose tepid, at best, career is founded on writing articles with the sole intent of evoking emotional responses from readers and he's done so several times in the past with Notre Dame fans. The kid seriously doesn't care for journalism, he's just looking for clicks.

The comments were his opinion and definitely baited by the writer trying to make a splash on an emotional topic. There was no "hating". That is a big media keyword for when a celebrity says something they don't like. Nothing new there either.

Only two things will come from this; more advertising for the Robertsons and less money for A&E when the show goes somewhere else. And we will watch it wherever it goes. Hilarious show.

How about we don't applaud idiots for acting like it?

Is that asking too much? I know you're from Alabama, so that might sound like a far fetching idea.

If some one wants to stand up for their beliefs they are praised as a hero....only if it PC.
Phil believes in the bible and tries to practrice what he preaches. I give him props for being brave and standing by the morals he and his faith hold dear. If he had said he was in support of homosexuality he would be praised my the media as being brave for standing up for what he believes against the church but when he stand up for what he believes along with the church, its appalling.

His beliefs are bigoted and he equated homosexuality with murder and beastiality, which is ignorant as hell. I don't care about his stupid show, but it's a dumb thing to say.

He also said blacks were better under Jim Crow laws, which is a much worse comment. I am surprised that's not the comment that was getting him in trouble. That's a terrible comment.
