So the Elam thread has broken down to Mitch Hedberg quotes, does this mean we will start quoting Brian Regan?

How shallow is a kid who is swayed by S.E.C. type b.s. like this? (mass mailings) Personally I think that if the recruit is into that sort of thing rather than the quality of the education...we don't stand a chance against the S.E.C. After-all the mass mailings from Auburn, Ole Miss. etc. come with the keys to a new car, etc.
I'm confused. ND is doing the mass mailings last time I knew.

Sorry, what am I supposed to look at there?

I repeat...if a kid is so immature that this kind of thing impresses him to the point that this is a deal maker, I don't think that bodes well for him as the type of player who will help a program. Sure most 17 year old kids would like it, but if this is what the kid uses to decide between Notre Dame and some other school, his commitment is pretty weak. Personally, I like to have recruits who are impressed with the excellent education athletes receive at Notre Dame and the special atmosphere that no other university can match. Kids who are all about the "window dressing" are the ones who transfer or jump ship on NSD. You don't have to agree with me, but how childish is it to negative rep me for it?

Your reflection in the computer screen.
They didn't send strippers and blow. It was just some mail.

Ahhh, I see. I have an opinion contrary to yours so I should stop posting on this board. Nice.

Yes I know. It is a harmless little thing. I just can't believe that any recruit with his head screwed on right would make a mass mailing like that a legitimate factor in their decision. It is not so much that Kelly approved this action, it is the idea that by doing it we are going to tip the scales in our favor. If a dump of hundreds of pieces of mail is the basis of a kid's college choice, then how much "love" will he feel when SEC sleezeballs offer his Daddy a condo? We can't win the battle for kids whose priorities are such. If the coaches are doing it just to brighten up a solid thinking kid's day, sort of saying "you deserve a little special attention", that is fine.
Again.... sounds like you belong more here... Rock's House at NDNation than you do on Irish Envy.
Edit: What Kane and GITF said is correct.
Times have changed and recruiting efforts must tailor to the kids desires. Unless of course you want to become a perennial 8-5 team. If sending out 477 letters reaffirms the fact that ND is very interested, then why the fuck not do it? The letters never were meant to sway the kid one direction or another, but to boost what they already know. It's not like Elam is gunna say.... "DAMN!!!! ND sent me 477 letters! But hold on a fast minute. UK only sent me 464 letters? Looks like I'm heading to ND since they want me more!"
Times have changed. Get over it. We already trying to play catchup here.
So it won't sway a kid in one direction or the other, but if we don't do it we are doomed to be perennial 8-5 team?
Times most certainly have changed. But as you point out, these little tricks are "not going to sway... kid(s)s in one direction or another". That is my point. The kid for whom 477 letter day was the day he decided to commit to Notre Dame is probably incapable of keeping up with the demands of Notre Dame. I can't believe any kid who is seriously considering Notre Dame cares all that much about these letters. A visit from Coach Alford makes a real difference...this is kind of like a Christmas Card. Nice to know they are thinking about me, but...
