LSU isn't even a top ten class right now, correct? Are they expected to land multiple five stars or something?

Yeah:

:s::s::s::s::s: #1 RB #1 OVR | Leonard Fournette
:s::s::s::s::s: #3 CB #9 OVR | Tony Brown
:s::s::s::s::s: #1 WR #11 OVR | Speedy Noil
:s::s::s::s::s: #2 WR #15 OVR | Malachi Dupre
:s::s::s::s::s: #2 DT #24 OVR | Gerald Willis
:s::s::s::s::s: #2 S #27 OVR | Jamal Adams
:s::s::s::s::s: #1 OLB #28 OVR | Clifton Garrett

Well Alabama could end with:

:s::s::s::s::s: #1 OT #2 OVR | Cameron Robinson
:s::s::s::s::s: #1 SDE #4 OVR | Da'Shawn Hand
:s::s::s::s::s: #1 CB #5 OVR | Marlon Humphrey
:s::s::s::s::s: #1 ILB #16 OVR | Raekwon McMillan
:s::s::s::s::s: #1 ATH #22 OVR | Bo Scarborough
:s::s::s::s::s: #3 S #31 OVR | Laurence Jones

Jones, Scarborough, Hand, and Robinson are already committed. Plus they have a shot at Fournette too of course.

Maybe this helps drive the point many have been making for years... myself included... that some just seem to not get... it is NOT okay when ND consistently loses (verbals, transfers or otherwise) four star and above defensive recruits... over, and over, and over... not if we want ND to compete with the kings of cfb again...

^ This guy

Because ND is radically different from other schools (cough...in the South...cough), our margin of error is extremely slim. We can't plug in JUCOs, many recruits don't want to come North, and some won't qualify. Swinging and missing won't get us to a competitive level.

I get what you're saying, but for me, college football success is based on:

50% coaching staff
25% quarterback
25% the rest of the team

If you get the right staff and QB you can be in any game. Notre Dame played three BCS teams this season and could've beaten all three.

And I get what you are saying... though very few teams consistently compete at the highest level without consistently bringing in highly rated defensive studs. For me, THAt and a more sane schedule are two clear cut, long standing issues that have held ND back from the front group...

I tend to agree with this and might even put more on the QB.. Auburn is a prime example with Malzahn & Marshall completely flipping the script.

QB is clearly important, but would people really put it over defense?? and how many NC winners would really back that up? Maybe one or two that happened to have once in a lifetime freaks at QB?? Whereas you have a long list of 'game managers' that didn't lose games while their D went out and won them... That's the way i have always seen it.

I completely agree with you on the coaching, but I'd put less weight on the QB. You can win without an elite QB. Assuming coaching is in place, I'll take athletes on defense, a dominant o-line and an average QB that fits the system.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a guy like Winston, I just don't think you need an elite guy to win like you do in the NFL.

Elite lines and dominate trenches.
Run the ball
Be efficient with passes.
No TOs.

Simple game.

This is pretty much where I am at... I would put QB on my list of critical ingredients... but definitely behind a dominate defense. In college football I think those units are recurited as much as anything.

From 2007-09 we had Jimmy Clausen at QB and weak defense and won 16 games in three seasons.
From 2011-13 we had mediocre Tommy Rees or young Everett Golson at QB but had defensive talent like Te'o and Tuitt and Nix and Jaylon and won 28 games.
There's a lot going on there, and some of it probably comes back to coaching. But recruiting difference-makers on defense translates into a lot of wins.

I would like to suggest a category for the IE Awards. "Best Thread DeRailer" Seems to happen a lot around here. How about that Quick kid. Great football player, would love to have him with the Irish. Great to get the Sacramento pipeline finally flowing.

While defense is very important, QB can affect EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT of the game on the field. If your QB is inefficient and commits turnovers, then it makes things 100x more difficult for the defense. Unfortunately, Tommy has been that this year. He is throwing a shade over 50% and 13 INT's. Those are bad numbers one way or another.

I think he would be the "star" of this class. Per 247 has:

Speed: 8
Athleticism: 9
Explosiveness: 10
Change of direction: 9
Versatility: 8

Rarely a player get a 10 and he has a 10 in terms of explosiveness. A game breaker!

Quick could totally turn the tables in terms of making that "Auburn" like flip. I think every comment on what it takes to play college championship football is right on.

Quick with Tori Hunter could provide an insane explosiveness that ND hasn't seen for a while. Maybe a little with TJ his senior year. What a great mix with DD, CR, and the speed of CB and WF!

Further, speaking of chemistry, the offensive line is being built for the speed game. Even the guards are long, and what nobody has talked about is this coming offensive line may be one of the fastest ever. Great for protecting a mobile qb and helping explosive players extend the play.

Could even give guys like AC a chance to do their stuff.

Indeed.
2013 was a heck of a O-line haul, 2014 is even better, and 2015 looks even better. That's just a lot a damn fast beef. I'm excited. I'm expecting a very very good offense next year.
Maybe I'm just being my usual optimistic everything is green self.
