Like what? Besides an on-campus stadium?
UCLA is a basketball school first, and plays second fiddle to USC in LA. But they're a sleeping giant. If they actually committed themselves to football, they could be a sustained top 20 program, and one of the three or four best in the West. Barring Phil Knight/Boone Pickens style investment it's hard to see Washington ever getting to that. Not enough native talent or focus.
As it is today, they're comparable jobs in the Pac-12's second tier. UCLA to Washington would be a lateral move for most (maybe a U-Dub homer like Mora considers it an improvement). But UCLA has more upside, and Mora, like him or not, seems to be getting them there.
And have been...for 100 years. And I think you gave one great answer, yourself, the reason why I and others on here have said UCLA isn't necessarily a better job than UW-- "If they actually committed themselves to football." I think after all these years and all the history, the more proper way to describe UCLA than "sleeping giant," is "not a great job."
I've wondered myself why ucla isn't better. They're in an awesome section of a warm weathered, glamorous U.S. city, right in the midst of high school talent. NDinL.A. can give you more specifics, but their enormous, off-campus stadium (and depending on L.A. traffic, it's like a 40 minute--1 1/2 drive from campus) is actually a big negative (how many college kids are able and willing to make that drive?). They don't pay their assistants well or take care of the staff well, there's never really been an institutional backing for a premiere program, many students and alumni are indifferent to their success, L.A. is a finicky place-- they couldn't support and sustain an NFL team, let alone the little brother college program in the city. Sure, if they're doing well, the bandwagoneers will hop aboard, but once they have a 6-6 season, they're back off.
This is all information I've gathered from a couple ucla alums I know (season ticket holders) and NDinL.A. As I said, he can give you a better rundown than I. But in my opinion, the UW job is a better job...all things being equal (mainly meaning when ucla isn't having a glimmer of success while big brother across town is down). I wouldn't say Washington's head and shoulders above ucla, but yeah, still overall better.
