That's my thought.
Unlesssssss..... Malzahn turns out to be a Chip Kelly level guru, which he very well might be. Chip Kelly had a similar meteoric rise and it was a good gamble by Oregon.
I would liken Chip Kelly to be more like Brian Kelly.
Both started out at a small school (DII vs FCS) on the defensive side of the ball. Brian became a head coach much quicker, but it took him basically 20 years before getting a head coaching gig at the FBS level. Chip Kelly took nearly the same amount of time before becoming a coach at the FBS level as Nike U's OC. We all know what they have done from there.
The one thing I do think both Chip and Gus have in common is that they took over a team crafted to run their offense. People forget that Gus recruited most of the players on Auburns roster, which allowed for quicker acclimation for both player and coach.
Although he's got a very small track record he took a talented, massively underperforming roster and got them to play tougher football. Isn't that exactly what Texas needs?
Yes, but as stated above, the roster was taylor made for his offense since he recruited most of the players. Not so at Texas.
Plus, to win championships, you need to play good defense. Auburn this year is ranked 69th in total defense, 51st rushing defense and 45 in pass efficiency.
A little bit of trivia for us all. Auburn was the last team to win the national championship with a team total defense that was outside the top 10. Who was the last team before Auburn to win the MNC without a top 10 defense?
