I love to Baylor play somebody of consequence to get to the NCG. Sagarin has them with the 100th toughest schedule.

Baylor will be tested very soon. OU, Texas Tech, Okie State, TCU and Texas round out the rest of their schedule.

It will be 8 eventually. Most of the coaches are already talking about it. May take a couple years, but we are lucky they got a 4 team playoff. Most expect it to expand to an 8 team playoff eventually, it is just a matter of when.

What do you guys think will happen when Schiano is fired? Think any teams will take a chance on him? I could see a team like Illinois or Minnesota (can't imagine Kill is coming back) going after him, or maybe UCONN or Syracuse.

I think he'll definitely get another shot at a HC position in FBS. UConn would be a great landing spot for him. Syracuse also makes sense.

Those bastards cost Notre Dame a national championship last season by beating Kansas State. I'm not over it yet.

I wouldn't have minded playing Oregon either, so Stanford didn't do us any favors by knocking them off. Oregon tends to fold when they play teams that are physical (Auburn, Stanford most years, Ohio State a few years ago, USC to a lesser extent, etc), which we would have been last year.

Carl Pelini resigns as Florida Atlantic coach - ESPN

Carl Pelini has resigned as coach at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday, a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

FAU has scheduled a news conference for 4 p.m. Wednesday. The school would not confirm Pelini's resignation.

Pelini, who replaced Howard Schnellenberger as the Owls coach after the 2011 season, will leave with a 5-15 record.

Stan Van Gundy just said on national radio that he believes Nick Saban can get caught running a meth lab and not be fired by Alabama. I would tend to agree.

They think Muschamp's on the hot seat? I realize its a down year for them but damn, that was a top 5 team last year. Gary Patterson too? Guy's a legend in Ft Worth, can't imagine he goes anywhere unless by choice.

I think the Gator fans are looking at B. Pease more than Muschamp right now. That offense is horrendous.

College Football Coaching Rumors

By Rachel Fisher on November 7, 2013
Pin It
Here’s an interesting name to watch at USC — Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton.

Hamilton’s name has been floating around coaching circles as a possible candidate for the Trojans. The former Stanford assistant has Pac-12 ties and certainly fits the profile that AD Pat Haden seems to be looking for.

Most of the names linked to the USC job have NFL experience, but the one big name who doesn’t is Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin.

There are all sorts of rumors linking the Aggies coach to the USC job and various expected NFL openings. A couple of sources indicate that there’s a growing rift between Sumlin and TAMU AD Eric Hyman. We’re not sure how serious it is, but that could explain why Sumlin seems to be looking.

A surprise name that could emerge at USC – and other major jobs – is Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin is rumored to be interested in a return to college coaching. That may be because the Steelers are interested in someone else being their coach, but sources say he’s interested in college jobs nonetheless.

Most of the people we’ve spoken to that are closest to the Florida football program over the past couple of weeks believed Will Muschamp was safe – no matter how the Gators finished the season. However, that opinion has started to wane.

At least two insiders tell us that the Vanderbilt game Saturday could be pivotal. You see, Florida hasn’t had a losing season since 1979. The Gators are 4-4 with the Commodores, South Carolina, Georgia Southern and FSU remaining.

Several sources now believe that Saturday is a must-win game for Muschamp. A 5-7 finish – or even a 6-6 finish could end his tenure in Gainesville.

What about AD Jeremy Foley’s vote of confidence a few weeks ago? As we mentioned at the time, Foley told Ron Zook he was safe on a Friday. Zook was unemployed by Monday.

If Muschamp is terminated, where would the Gators turn? There could be multiple options.

Most insiders believe Foley would want to hire UNC coach Larry Fedora. Louisville coach Charlie Strong seems to have strong booster support. Sources close to Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops believe he might finally be ready to make a move after 15 seasons in Norman.

There’s a lot of chatter that Penn State coach Bill O’Brien could return to the NFL as a head coach. There are several pro jobs that could open and O‘Brien is sure to be on multiple lists.

For whatever its worth, Doug Marrone, who made the same leap last year, thinks O’Brien is staying put.

Watch out for Texas A&M DC Mark Snyder at Florida Atlantic. The former Marshall coach worked with FAU AD Pat Chun while the two were at Ohio State.

Texas coach Mack Brown’s tenure could very well hinge on the outcome of the season finale against Baylor. In other words, even 9-3 may not even save him.

We continue to hear that LSU coach Les Miles would have an interest in the Cowboys job, should it open. He was tight ends coach in Dallas for three seasons before landing the Oklahoma State job.

Rumor Mill Stat of the Day: Mississippi State started the 2012 season 7-0. In the 14 games since, the Bulldogs have gone 5-9, including 2-7 in the SEC.

Anyone heard anything on Iowa State recently? Would be nice to add Lazard to the 2014 class if there is a possible change.

Anyone heard anything on Iowa State recently? Would be nice to add Lazard to the 2014 class if there is a possible change.

According to CoachesHotSeat.com Paul Rhoades is on the 8th hottest seat. However their listing doesn't reflect the demeanor on campus or among the school's movers and shakers. They establish an arbitrary ranking preseason then reposition each coach up or down depending on whether they won or lost their last game.

Historically, ISU is a losing program winning only about 45% of its games. So expectations aren't lofty. Their last winning coach was Earle Bruce, 53%, who left in '78. Before Bruce you have to go back to WWII to find a coach whose career broke EVEN. Other than Bruce you have to go back to WWI to find the next coach with an ISU WINNING record.

Rhoades 5 years at ISU are:
7-6
5-7
6-7
6-7
1-7

Pretty bad ... but about 250% better than predecessor Gene Chizik's 3-9 and 2-10.

Last year ISU scored 8 points more than they allowed. It was the only season in the past 7 where ISU DID score more points than allowed. Rhoades appeared to be taking them to a "new" level by approaching .500 ... until the wheels fell off this season. I suspect their are ISU fans longing for a change to a winning coach while a lot of others feel Rhoades is so much better than those who came before him.

Lazard grew up with a losing ISU program as did his parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.

ISU only returned 9 starters this year while Steele figured they had the 6th Toughest Schedule.

Steele had them ranked pre-season at #69 right behind California.

Then the injuries started. So far this year among others, they've lost their Starting Center, Starting LT, Starting RT, and a #2 OT. Three OL Starters and three OTs on the two deep.

Injuries don't make Rhoades a bad coach.

Take out Bama's Center and 3 of their first 4 OTs and ND would have won a National Championship last year.

Muschamp's seat has to be slow-roasting over a fire pit right now.
