That looks purple at first, but the more I look at it, the more I see blue. Honestly, I would love for them to get turf and make some designs. Screw the old traditionals who want nothing but the lines. I want a ND logo in the middle of the field and lettering in the "golden" endzones.

nooooo

Good Gawd Amighty! I don't deny that I'm an aging hippie, but there is some truth and value in "less is more!"

I wouldn't mind having the Notre Dame logo at the 50 yard line but nothing more than that

Then a conundrum would follow. Just which logo would be used –

This:

This:

This:

This:

Or this:

And what would the orientation be? North to south, south to north, east to west, west to east? Some diagonal variant?

Maybe an embedded jumbotron that rotates among the five and spins them on a regular schedule?

Imagine the possibilities to clutter and create unimportant glitz!

The hell with it all. Just put a big PLACT sign right in the middle. ND logos on the 25's. Numbers inside shamrocks on each ten yardline and "SCREW TRADITION" in script in the endzone.

Im all for turf and a jumbotron but lets not get carried away.

I hope that ND holds the 'tradition' of evolving and being progressive above the tradition of logo-less grass fields, no video boards, and so on.

Have you guys ever played a contact sport on turf?
It is not a good idea.
Nobody has ever won a game because they have a turf field. But the amount of injuries and the other issues that are caused by turf make it not even worth the switch.
BAD MOVE!

Another person perpetuating a myth. Studies have shown LOWER injury rates on artificial turf.

BS. The question was have you ever played a contact sport on artificial turf?

People need to quit crying about the field they are playing on. Both teams have to deal with it.

So why not play on a better surface that doesn't cost tons of money to maintain and never looks ******?

We could all play on dirt, hell we could play on gravel and it wouldn't give an advantage either way.

Not only does the surface we play on look and perform terribly, maybe it is just me, but I always feel like ND just looks faster when we play on turf. I don't have any stats or anything to back me up, and maybe it's just that we underperform at home and it has nothing to do with the surface, but I just feel like we look faster and better on turf.

Could be that all of our home games are broadcast on NBC.

I have. Played college football on astro turf at Wittenberg in Springfield, OH twice and grassy turf at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH twice. Also played football at the RCA/Hoosier Dome when it was basically a grassy astro turf.

Astro turf, yes. Terrible idea. Hard, unforgiving, and scraps your skin off. Also causes nagging injuries like shin splints, knee pain, turf toes, and higher rates of serious injuries from your feet 'getting caught' on the surface.

Grassy turf is a great idea. It's like real grass with small black rubber pellets. Otherwise it's pretty much amazing. My college team went to grassy turf and I wish they had had it when I was in school. The grass we had was always in rough condition as the season wore on (school is in Indiana).

So in my opinion, one that has actual experience dealing with multiple playing surfaces, I think the grassy turf option is much better for an Indiana football field that will be utilized past the month of October.

I haven't played on either. But here in the North a lot of high schools are putting turf in as opposed to the field. The cost of upkeep on grass compared to minimal for the turf, it pays for itself in a short time. The drastic temp changes from summer to winter aren't easy on the grass. I can't imagine cash strapped high schools are changing if its bad for the players or the school.

And that's exactly my point it doesn't matter what we play on. Go back 10 years to every team that has won the Championship game. How many of those teams play on a artificial home field.
If your only argument for change is that it "looks better" that is ridiculous.

Did you check where those teams are located? The weather is different here. I just gave you the run down above.

The weather here destroys the fields. Especially as you get into October and November. The last thing you want is a field that is increasingly changing as the game goes, that is dangerous.

High schools can usually get away with it because the season is basically over come November aside from the the handful of teams that are still alive in the playoffs.

It looks better, takes less time to manage, and costs less.

What was your point again? That it doesn't give a team an advantage?

So why don't we just play on dirt?

I don't really think this is an issue for ND. Although I understand you point on the issue, I agree the game should be played on grass not carpet.

GO IRISH!!!!!!

Ive also played on multiple surfaces (including grassy turf) and natural IMHO is a lot better to play on.
I find it hard to believe that after all the years ND has been playing at the top of college football. An artificial field will solve anything.

Those black balls suck when they get in your eyes. When you do get tackled and the ground is hotter than the ambient air temp by 40 degrees than tell me how fatigue will not play a factor in the game. Also, playing on a frozen rubber field sucks worse than playing on a natural field that has natural grass.
I know people think being tackled on a rubber field would hurt less. Nothing is further than the truth. I always thought the natural ground was better at taking impact. After every game ive played on artificial turf I had turf hangover. Basically a headache from the pounding on the ground. Not to mention more dehydrated from the heat of the field.

As I said. Speaking from experience its a bad move.

I never said natural grass isn't better to play on. Of course it is. It's a lot easier to play on beautiful grass in South Carolina, where you are, in November than it is in Indiana, where Notre Dame is. That's what I was saying.

I never had those "turf hangover" problems, but I don't doubt you did. I could never tell the difference much between being tackled on quality grassy turf and real grass. Now the difference between astro turf and grass is night and day. It's like being tackled on carpeted concrete.

The black pellets can be a little annoying but I was never focused on that. When were your playing days in college? I played during the '04, '05, and '06 seasons.
