IIRC, he played "out of position" during those 5star camps. Didn't he? I feel like I read somewhere that he played WR and just wasn't enthused by it. Had he played TE or Defense, he may have been motivated a little more. Idk. I could be wrong. But I'm not willing to question this kid based on what some recruiting analysts say. I prefer to trust the staff and if Tyler wants to be at ND, that's good enough for me.

This is what I remember, they put him at WR and he had no interest in playing the position because he has never played the position before. He has always played TE and Defense.

Will visit Bama with his mom, no committing right now :/ Steve said we still look like the team to beat.

Seriously disappointing. I wonder if we were seriously as far out in front as everyone said.

Can't truly read into what his visit means.
Could be leaning towards Alabama
Could just want to double check ND is for him.
Could just want to get a free red carpet treatment.

I can't blame a kid for being extra careful with their decision.

We'll just have to sit back and hope. Nothing for us to do here.

Man I hope he ends up Irish. My coaching buddy met me at the door at school this morning laughing and telling me he was proud that ND showed Alabama's next TE a good time. He swears that according to all the bama sources that Luatua will be playing for bama. I just smiled and said, "yeah, ND coaches went ahead and gave him 3 coloring books. That way if he ends up in Tuscaloosa, he would have his books for his freshman year." Damnit, I had not been online this weekend and I had no clue this was going on. My fault entirely because I neglected to look on IE. I am currently preparing my comments for him. I already get to hear sh1t daily about the NC game. I really hate ND losing players to them as well!

It could just be that he's going to finish things (visits) out before he commits.

IMO there are four likely things that happened here:
1) Ole Miss last weekend really opened his eyes to what going to a party school would be like
2) He didn't like ND as much as he thought he would
3) Parents really want him to visit Bama again because they would prefer he played with his brother
3) He is just playing it close to the vest and doesn't want everyone knowing that he wants to come here

Yeah, I'm hoping it's 4. But I'm thinking it's more #1 and #2.

Well this is a kick in the balls, but only really disappointing in that we expected his commitment. His is hardly commitment of need, more luxury. Would obviously prefer to land him, but won't lose sleep if we don't.

When its said that we expected a commitment, is that IE talk or ND talk? I ask because I don't remember any buzz of him committing soon and thought he was gonna take his official to 'Bama at least.

I'm going off of pure memory and no research so I could be way off base.

There was a widely held belief that he has had ND out front for awhile and just needed to see the campus. Originated from recruiting sites and sources... and I think ND staff felt they would land a commitment this weekend too. Not sure what happened.

Wiltfong said awhile back that the only reason he wasn't committed already was his family wanted him to visit campus first. I hate to say it but I think its #1 on the Golden's list.

Everything that LAX said.

Per all the pay sites, we should have landed him. Hopefully we still do but, a little disappointing if you are a paying subscriber to say the least in my opinion.

I don't think we can discount him like that.

First, as we have seen this year with Troy, when the TE is involved (not the focal point like Eifert), the offense hits a different level. As it looks like now, there is no clear cut heir apparent to Troy. We have guys with potential, but nothing is set in stone right now. Looking back a few years, Ben K was going to be the guy. Well, he still could, but it doesn't look like that is in the cards. Hopefully Heuerman or Smythe can be the next great one, but nothing is certain. Plus, we need 2 or 3 TE's that we can rotate in and out for maximum effectiveness. IMO, that means we need 2 more TE's this class or we could feel a pinch in 2015.

I know that ND has led for awhile, I just wasn't sure if we put the onus on him committing because of said lead or it was stated by him/family that a commitment was imminent. Could the disappointment be self-inflicted? Who's to say he's not a silent commit? The family has experience with the process so maybe just holding it tight and wanting a big moment for him.

A commitment this weekend would have meant he'd have to cancel his official visit to Alabama, a weekend his parents had likely planned for months. I had no reason to believe the talk of him committing this weekend wasn't true, but I also didn't understand why he would considering he'd have to miss out on that Alabama experience with his brother/family.

Very reasonable explanation.

Slightly reassuring but Mike Franks thinks Luatua is still locked in to ND right now and has made up his mind even if he isn't ready to say it. Hard to pass up the November 9th game against LSU... although I worry about the impression Alabama smacking a drastically overrated LSU team might make.

All in all, without him popping this weekend you're probably looking at late November/early December at the earliest before he announces... and there is always a chance he drifts away. It's funny because Luatua has always said he wanted to make these visits and is just following through with his plan... so it'd be much ado about nothing if we all just took him at his word.

Yeah, doing a little more reading and talking to people these two posts get to the core of it.
