It isn't the responsibility of a reporter to not create a distraction just because it is the week of a rivalry game. And it may be a distraction on irishenvy.com, but most likely not at the Gug.

I'm not frowning upon the reporter for intentionally creating the distraction. That is one of the unfortunate consequences of publishing the story. The fault comes in the reporting.

There is no doubt that the Observer is sitting there saying "he said what he said." But obviously, further due diligence was required. I'm not a journalist, so I don't know whether the standard here for going with the story was met. This is just my unqualified opinion.

And it was on Mike and Mike.

Everyone is putting this all on the reporter because his story is the one that went public but someone posted last night where Stephon mentioned three times he was returning next year.

All I saw was an unverified ask.fm account claiming to be Stephon.

Do we even know that was him?

You answered your own question haha. He was *technically* within his guidelines to report on what Stephon said. It was a direct, clear quote from a primary source.

However, the paper I wrote for through college required three sources no matter what the story was. It wasn't an official "rule" as taught by the book, but it was a judgement call put in place by our editors. The student (but more so the Editor-In-Chief) made a bad decision by trying to break the story. I know where he's coming from though... it can be tempting to go against your better judgement when you have the story of your life at your fingertips.

Best theory is that he wanted to make the announcement in his own time. The guy that everyone is criticizing supposedly has it on tape, no?

i really don't get too caught up in this. i hope he stays but if he doesn't i still gta go to work next day and ill still have my tickets for the following year.

I reached out to DeFranks tonight, who confirmed that he has audio of Tuitt saying he’ll return for his senior year twice in an interview. The senior Finance major with a minor in Journalism, Ethics and Democracy filed his story late Wednesday night, likely confirming a huge boost to the future of the Irish defense.

Me2, er, I mean Keith Arnold

I've never seen a site where positive news gets shot down so quickly. How many times has something been posted and the celebration begins and within minutes the balloon gets popped? These posts never even make it to the next day before they're refuted.

Maybe we should invoke the three source rule here as well. At least the adrenaline roller coaster would slow down. lol

If the situation is as Keith Arnold reports it, and Tuitt told the reporter multiple times, on tape, that he's coming back, then The Observer is well within its "rights" to report that. Reading between the lines this doesn't sound like some "gotcha" situation or a casual conversation so much as something that came up in a broader sit-down interview, probably for the kind of profile The O regularly runs on football players.

Still, the story would have benefited from a little more work, like pressing him on "why" and getting Tuitt to elaborate a bit more on his decision, or talking with family or coaches to get them to elaborate a little more. Obviously this guy didn't want to lose his scoop but there are times when it's worth the risk in order to produce a more complete story (and to make sure your source doesn't backtrack, which is what appears to be happening here).
This would seem like one of those cases where there'd be wisdom in a smidge of patience.

If the reporter is telling the truth when he says that he has Tuitt on tape saying multiple times that he's coming back, then the blame shifts to Tuitt for wording his answers very poorly.

I don't think that the word "blame" is appropriate. It hardly ever is with kids. I think you have a kid who is planning on coming back, who hasn't asked for a whole lot in terms of ego gratification, who may be expressing his honest intent, all shaded by the realization that a moment was stolen and there are men watching with bags full of money.

I absolutely hate this is happening now. No reason to spark national interest on unworthy news during USC week.

When I heard it on Mike and Mike this morning I was skeptical due to the timing alone. Most players make this type of announcement following the season, definitely not before USC.

If our team isn't mentally stable enough to handle business on the field, despite this minor "distraction," I'm afraid our problems run far deeper than "will he? wont he?"

*I have faith we will be ready to play Saturday

All in favor of the motion to **** USC say, "aye;" opposed, "nay."

The "ayes" have it.

Motion carries unanimously.

Meeting adjourned.

Can you imagine what it's like to have your words unpacked on this level?

If somebody called my mom to ask what I was doing with my life... I'd be livid.

That said: Outside of a BCS win or 10+ more sacks this season, he'll come back.

I'll bet all my vBucks on it. (maybe with some odds. ;) )

It doesn't sound like anyone was parsing words. Tuitt basically said he was coming back. All he had to say was that he was not even thinking about that stuff until after the season. Unless he was totally misquoted, its obviously news for ND fans!

As far as people calling your Mom, why would you be livid? You are going to make millions of dollars as a spectacle. Football players don't do anything worthwhile or productive, they entertain us. Part of the reason they get paid so much is because they don't just keep us entertained for the 4 hours a weekend, 16 times a year, they are actually playing. They entertain us around the clock. That requires lots of news, all the time. It comes with the territory!

Plus, a lot of these guys formed "relationships" with the parents during recruiting. Mrs. Tuitt probably knew who was calling her.

07:31 AM ET 10.18 | Notre Dame junior defensive end Stephon Tuitt had tried earlier this week to curtail the constant speculation about whether he would declare for the 2014 NFL Draft. Tuitt stated -- prematurely and perhaps incorrectly -- that he would return for his senior season. Simply put, according to those close to Tuitt -- including his mother, Tamara Bartlett, long-time mentor and trainer Clifford "Gator" Browning and Kelly -- the question hasn't even been explored fully, let alone decided. "He probably wished he could have answered a little bit better if he was asked the question again," Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said Thursday night. ... "No decisions will be made (about NFL Draft status) as long as I'm the head coach here until the end of the season. We won't be making any announcements."

Kelly once again dodging the Bryant transferring to the NFL rumor.
