The weekly trash talk thread on /r/CFB is always entertaining, but the top rated comment this week is USC v. ND. It's good for a few laughs.

The weather out here in the Bend has been pretty lame. Kinda cold and rainy. Dreary grey skies.

Hope this is an omem for good things to come Saturday.

OFD's Eric Murtaugh just posted his preview of the SC game:

My gut instinct is that this will be a loss for Notre Dame. This has looked like a 4-loss team for most of the season and losses to USC Saturday and Stanford in the finale are more likely than any others. However, my gut can be and is often quite wrong.

So now that I've successfully balanced myself so delicately on the fence I must fall down on one side. Notre Dame needed the bye week really bad---hopefully Tuitt is healthier and Sheldon Day is ready to roll. Even though USC has had 10 days off, a well rested Irish team gives Kelly & Co. a little bit of an edge. The weather could play a factor with game-time temperatures dropping into the 40's and that may be yet another edge. The final edge is Notre Dame's mental toughness, which has been outstanding even through a somewhat rough 4-2 start to the season. I fully expect USC to control the game for long stretches but the Irish to counter with a few big plays and fight through mistakes to grab a win.

Notre Dame 23

USC 21

And F/+ predicts a 5-7 point Irish loss. Though it hasn't been very accurate this season, so TIFWIW.

RE the first bolded part:
Their D is very aggressive, which should scare us. But after watching them play Arizona, they overplay a lot. In an ideal world Kelly actually plans for this and adds a few wrinkles to the playbook to get them to back off. Something like having Tommy pump fake (gasp) a WR screen and hit C Breezy on a 35 yard go route. Or (since we love to go Shotgun with Tommy) a RB draw every now and then. Just a few plays to keep them off balance.

Yeah, I agree. It's one of those things where if we pick up the blitz well as we have almost all year, Tommy should have lots of opportunities for big plays. He can't miss them, or even worse make bad throws as that will lead to interceptions. We just can't have plays like Oklahoma or we'll be in a world of pain. I'm also worried about what happens if they DON'T blitz and play conservative D with athletic DBs... but I think Ed O and Pendergast are too stupid to do that.

RE the second bolded part:
I just worry about our S getting torched by Lee and Agholor. Look what Jeremy Gallon did to us and he's not nearly as explosive as those two.

I would be too if Lee was 100%. I really don't think he's that healthy. Agholor is fluid and a great WR, but he actually isn't really a straight line burner. Last year, we gave help over the top and USC tried again and again and again to throw deep on Russel and Farley. They only hit one of them, Russel had a pick 1v1 against Lee, and USC was ineffective moving the football for the most part. Against predictable pro style offenses with a fullback we are really well equipped to stop the big play as long as the pass rush is getting home and the safeties aren't needed to stop the run.

i hope we go to run game hard if they stop blitzing, then bam, play action.

It would be quite frustrating to lose to these guys after we beat ASU, who smacked them up pretty good... I know it doesn't work that way, but still...

I'm ignorant on USC this year. Who's Blackwell and Madden? Are they important?

I'm hoping "give it a go" means decoy. Also, Madden being out is huge. Makes it much easier to make USC one-dimensional, allowing Prince and Tuitt and co. to pin their ears back like they did late against ASU.

Everything I've heard from USC friends is that Lee isn't even close to 100%. Hope they're not BSing.

Tre Madden has rushed for over 100 yards in 4 of their 6 games.

Going off his stats, seems like Blackwell was trying to fill in for Lee. Had 4 catches in 2 games.

Looks like the Madden injury will hurt

They're pretty damn deep at RB. I don't think the Madden loss stings as much as we would like. Lee being less than 100% is a much bigger storyline here IMO..

They're no deeper than us, as far as stats goes.

USC
Tre Madden (out)- 115 carries- 611 yards
Justin Davis- 51 carries- 349 yards
Javorius Allen- 20 carries- 115 yards
Silas Redd- 19 carries- 80 yards

Notre Dame
GA3- 56 carries- 323 yards
Cam- 63 carries- 259 yards
Amir- 38 carries- 178 yards

Looks like we have more depth with Madden injured

Well then we can't forget about Folston either lol. Isaac and Folston have very similar stats

Isaac- 7 rushes for 58 yards
Folston- 11 rushes for 69 yards

True, but none of this has anything to do work my original statement that Lee at <100 is bigger than the loss of Madden. We may or may not be deeper than them at RB, but it does not affect the point I was originally trying to make: LEE MUY IMPORTANTE!

Excellent stuff. I'm actually happy they are "so" deep at RB position given the scholly rescrictions.

If we get QB pressure like we did against ASU, Lee might be non-existant

Silas Redd only played against Arizona after Knee surgery in the spring.

What's your point?

My point is your numbers don't show the whole picture. Madden is out, which is a big deal, but the fact that Silas Redd is back and will probably get a good deal of carries off sets that.
