From the ISD Intel/USC Recruiting Weekend Threads:
As Jmunsirish deduced from the name of the picture file on the article, the new visitor added to the list is Tashon Smallwood, a CA DE who is teammates with Quick. He is a USC decommitment.

So apparently most people think Tashon and Quick end up playing together and thats why some feel that Quick would end up at Oklahoma with Tashon. With Denbrock and Staff making a strong push for Tashon this could benefit ND.

“Smallwood is a big three-technique,” said long time Central East assistant football Coach Tony Perry. “He is very quick, strong 6-foot-1, 295-pound defensive tackle that is like a defensive end. He is very quick off the ball, and he is an inside guy as he plays the nose then sometimes over the guard. He always has to be double teamed and he usually beats that double team. He is a very good D-tackle.”

Nice film. Would love to get this guy -- especially if he can bring Quick along with him.

He moves well for a big guy. Glad we are getting a look at him.

His film actually reminds me of Vanderdoes's. He plays with violence. Yes, please.

are he/quick from same HS as "those other 2 fresno guys"?

Fresno Central East, with defensive backs mentor Tony Perry, is the high school. They send a lot of players to Division 1 schools. So far, Notre Dame recruiting efforts have not been very successful. Some of it has to do with shortcomings in the classroom. Maybe Notre Dame should be advised to Just Walk on By, and not, waste so much time in recruiting this part of California. Then again, where better to mine gold than in California!

To be fair, there was also that D-Back last year, LJ Moore, who was pretty interested in us but we cooled on him after landing Luke. Wound up at Oklahoma, right?
I agree we've spent a lot of time at one school without closing a deal. But we could really use another top-flight DT.

He is really short. I'm surprised we are going after him.

Sheldon Day's 6-2. This guy's 6-1. He's alright. Especially if we see him as a nose; there's more important things than height.

It's probably better for a nose to be a little bit shorter. His center of gravity has to be a little stronger. These guys are usually harder to push forward than taller guys.

Never a fan of guys who commit to schools but yet announce they are taking other visits. He committed to USC right when offered, then started flirting w other schools shortly thereafter. USC thought he'd be firm, especially considering he was only a 3 star, but that was far from the case.

By the time he 'decommitted', they had already grown tired of his act and had stopped recruiting him. Something about those Fresno kids lol...something always crazy going on with their recruitments.

Glad he's looking at ND, but from what ive seen, I'd put him at about 2% chance of being Irish, if that.

Tashon and staff are just starting to build rapport. His interest has spiked and we should know more after this weekend. Oklahoma and Cal are the two at the top. He has reached out to ND a lot in the past but there was uncertainty surrounding Elam and Holley so we took a wait and see approach. The staff loves his progession at his position and has given him the green light if he so chooses.

Do you think this is more about the (un)likelihood - or at least uncertainaty - of landing one of Elam or Holley or more about how much Smalwood has progressed?

I'm not completely sure. I would venture its a little of both. Including him reaching out to ND. I'll ask Steve and Tom and get back to you with what they say.

I don't know why the staff doesn't go hard after every kid they target. If they don't get their top pick(s), then they still have the rapport and trust built up and don't have to try and make up ground. A lot of kids end up signing with one of the the first few schools that show interest.

IMHO, we are much more likley to get neither Holley nor Elam than either of them.

I assume that we are going all out on Smallwood at this point. If we aren't, we are just being stubborn and short-sighted.

I would LOVE to have Tashon with or without Holley or Elam. My ideal would be all three, but I would take Tashon and either of the others in a heartbeat.

Keep in mind that we have Dickerson already. He's the same position profile. We have to have two and I think 3 would be preferable. Dickerson/Tashon and that way we can hold out for Elam or Holley.

How many defensive line recruits do we have already that you think will actually line up predominantly with their hands down? Dickerson/Hayes?

After a few years of development I expect. Dickerson NT/DT, Hayes DE/DT, and Blankenship DE, Trumbetti DE. With Bonner potentially growing into a DE. My wild card here is that I think Trumbetti could play at CAT LB if we miss on our higher rated targets at that position. Elam, Holley, and Smallwood are all NT/DT types.

I think Trumbetti will and (in time) Blankenship will play a 5 technique.

This. I don't see why we would hesitate to take 3.

Recruiting is a process and I think the staff has changed their view as its went along and 3 is the high end number with the 3rd being Elam or Holley. Now, if Elam were to commit soon that would make it interesting to see if they continue to go after Tashon.

we could probably take all 4 if we really wanted to but we won't get that luxury
