You can always switch to a 4-3 and play a myriad of guys we have very effectively at DT. Or play a 3-4 without a true nose and be just fine. There are lots of easy ways to compensate for a lack of a Louis Nix style dominant nose guard.

You can't conjure up a MLB/ILB out of thin air.

I was assuming they're trying to stay in a 3-4.

IMO a silent

I think your right, can't remember if it was Wiltfong or one of the guys at II but it was said that the only reason he hadn't verbaled yet was because his family said he had to wait until he visited.

Luatua ends up Irish. I haven't heard anything out of the Bama camp in weeks on him and it appeared it was a two team race then.

NG is probably a bigger concern than ILB. Such a strange absence of recruits lining up for these spots.

It is odd, isn't it.
Both are positions of huge importance in our 3-4 defense. Probably the two best defensive players of the Kelly era thus far have been an ILB and a nose tackle (yes, you might argue Tuitt's better than Nix, but in terms of importance to our defense, I wouldn't), both of whom also happen to be very high-character guys who attract recruits like a magnet. And we've whiffed repeatedly on both positions the last couple of years in recruiting to replace them. That's gonna hurt us, next year especially.

Well you got Elam on campus for the USC game and he sure looks like a prototypical NT. Close the deal on him even though he is probably a full year away from seeing the field. It would be a tough sell as most think he is a silent commit to UK, but an OV is the time to make him think a little.

This is going to be off topic to Luatua, but in reference to your post. I think the whiff on NT has to do with the scheme ND plays. High school kids generally want to be the star of the team and as we know, the NT at ND, or in a 3-4 in general, is not the star to the general public. Most high school DL want to rush the passer and not just plug the middle. That's just my .02 on why we are whiffing on the big NT.

Tyler will be ND on Oct 19.

Elam and/or Thomas Holley are #1 priority remaining for this class, IMO. And I guess ILB Nyles Morgan will visit, but we seem to be on the outside there.
As for near-misses, we almost had Eddie Vanderdoes and Alex Anazalone last year, but didn't. There was that one pretty good linebacker from Teo's high school who went to A&M, at least in part because he didn't want to have to fill those shoes here and be constantly compared. Now even Grace is hurt. Kona Schwenke could step in for Nix next season, but we burned his redshirt for nothing a few years back.
It's been a weird string of events. But landing Elam would be great.

And yes, back to Luatua. Let's keep up the abundance of tight end riches, shall we?

That is rather short-sighted of them. War Daddy NG's make good money on Sundays.

I know, it just still irks me that they have the most clearly bought recruiting class since I started following recruiting in 2011.

I don't really know because I don't often follow recruiting, but I think the most clearly illicit recruiting class has to be the most recent Ole Miss class.

Oh, I know. But that is what I am seeing from the recruits.

Peoria, one thing to keep in mind, and is becoming prevalent..... NFL teams are switching to more 3-4......not all, but there is a bigger need for NG's on Sundays then ever before......

Ole Miss, Clemson, and UNC have had the most obvious pay-for-play classes recently. It's just a joke when you have multiple people taking twitter/facebook/instagram photos with wads of $100 bills and nothing comes of it.

Not worried about that with this kid. He cut out OSU because "shady business".

That 'shady business' was asking him to postpone a visit because they were expecting a visit and commit from another TE they really liked, which happened.

Not quite the same as being paid to commit.

I have been reading a lot more recently about pre-paid debit cards are all the rage now and not so much straight cash. They are virtually untraceable as far as who uses them and where (regarding NCAA investigations).

Point taken. But if a kid really has his morals put together, then he would think this is wrong too, but I do understand your point.
