Hey OC irish- I beg to differ, Jaylons reactions won last nights game game, he blows up 2 plays and ASU settles for FGs, without those we lose, and none of our other LBs I bet make those plays. This kid was an absolute beast last night on a big stage, against a high power offense, great to see. Irish fan from the Northwest!

Jaylon was a freak! And so was Shembo, Brindza, Jones, and Schwenke! And that my friends is why we won! Dats-dat!

did you not notice brindza in the kicking game? one bad field goal attempt and the rest of the night was brilliant kicking, punting, and kicking off.

hands down game ball if not him TJ Jones

Yeah I did lol. I guess that's what a good performance in all 3 phases can look like. For me Smith was exceptional all around. That's my opinion. But "grrrrr... you don't agree with me so you are wrong. grrr....."

According to cfbstats.com, Jaylon was credited with the following against ASU
TFL-1.5 for 9 yards
Pass broken Up - 1
Fumble Forced 1
Tackles - 6 solo, 3 assisted

OFD's pburns2010 just posted a film breakdown of Jaylon's dominance against ASU:

Early in the season, Jaylon Smith looked like a freshman who was lost on many plays. As the season has worn on, he has picked up just enough to get really dangerous out there. He is showing flashes of what he may become more and more often, but he is still having some problems with play recognition and setting the edge on running plays.

The DOG position in this defense has some of the most complicated responsibilities in both pass and run coverages. The fact that a true freshman is able to step in and be as productive as Jaylon Smith is truly amazing, and a testament to his athletic prowess and ability to pick up the complex assignments required of the DOG position. We should all be extremely excited to watch him play for the next 4 years (please all 4 years).

Very cool article. Nice to see Jaylon recognized so highly amongst the other star freshmen. I was surprised that there were only 6 or 7 of the composite 5-stars that have made "large" impacts, whereas some are basically getting garbage time work.

(For the record, I'm not saying garbage time work is a good or bad thing, just surprised at the low number of high-impact guys. But maybe it's always like that.)

Longo's fault. Fire Kelly and Diaco sucks.

Sorry but it must be escaping me, when did Jaylon force a fumble against ASU? I only remember BJ and Tuitt.

He forced one but it was recovered by ASU.

For everyone criticizing the staff's use of Bryant, take notice of Ty Isaac's stats at USC. Frosh just aren't always ready to play and there's nothing wrong with that.

Should we really be comparing ourselves to a crappy underachieving team that just fired their coach? I see your point but USC coaching decisions aren't the best comparisons.

While true, doesn't make his point any less valid.

The only thing I don't like about that logic is why burn the redshirt for special teams and two carries?

This has been discussed ad nauseum. Due to our front loaded schedule, he was seeing a smaller load. He almost certainly would have seen increased reps during 2nd half of the season.

I think you misunderstand me. I'm not saying "play him tons." I'm saying "play him zero." IF he were ready later, play him then. ONLY burn the redshirt if and when you expect meaningful production.

Im pretty sure coaches want to get them on field experience before throwing them big meaningful reps.

Coaches know things.

Using that logic, redshirts wouldn't even exist because playing on the kickoff unit is more valuable than an extra year of eligibility. I'm all for "meaningless" snaps to get some game experience, but not if it means trimming an entire season off a kid's career.

Speaking of underachieving....... have you watched any of the Notre Dame games thus year????? ASU aside, we've looked fairly pedestrian, and our Defense has been downright awful this year.......

Those are Aaron Lynch kinda numbers

Too soon?

(Some kids you need to get on the field in a more limited capacity, just to get used to the game. And if you don't have headhunters on your special teams, screw it!)

No. But Aaron only had numbers in one or two games, except extra footsteps taken running around blockers.
