Man it is good to be NDinLA. Bastard!

i am in western michigan today, would be sweet to go down to SB to watch the camp, not sure if i can wing it though :(

Not that good to me bro, cause the camp was closed to the public. :boohoo:

I actually hurried through lunch with my wife just so I could watch the camp (yeah, I have issues). We have a gate and parking pass that can allow me to park right across the street from the practice field, but when I got there the field was friggin' empty.

So I went to the Loftus and walked right in, but there was a guy checking passes where the kids were practicing, so that was that. I did get a glimpse of them running their 40's; it was Diaco in charge and both he and Coach Elliot were timing them. I got a pic from afar but I'm on my iPad right now so I can't show it..

Then I went to work out, and an hour later on my way to my car the campers were practicing outdoors. But unlike yesterday, they were checking passes (man, there was about a hundred ND camp shirts and passes in the Gug just sitting there and I could have EASILY swiped one, but I'm not like that, sadly). Apparently no one cares if we watch kickers, punters and long snappers, but the 'real' players are off-limits.

I did see Alford getting after it and he seemed really into the coaching. Really cool to see.

Anyway, congrats Tyler on being Irish. Good luck this season!

Somebody needs to delete his H.S. stats for the '11 and '12 seasons then as he made 12 of 15 FGAs for a 80% success rate. BTW, I found Kickoff and FG stats but NO punt data.

'12: 9/11 FGs .818; 52/53 PATs .981; 79 Pts Scored

'11: 3/4 FGs .750; 22/24 PATs .917; 31 Pts Scored

Not sure what you're saying here about deleting his stats. I just posted what 247/II have said, staff likes him on Kickoffs and Punts.

I can't believe some of you are actually complaining about picking up a combo specialist. You realize it's actually pretty rare to find a kid that can kick AND punt relatively well, right?

Notre Dame football recruiting: Irish add punter/kicker to 2014 class - southbendtribune.com

Tyler Newsome didn't start taking punting seriously until November of last year.

Seven months later, the focus has paid off.

On Thursday, the 2014 prospect participated in a punting and kicking camp at Notre Dame coordinated by national kicking coach Jamie Kohl.

By lunch time, he was kicking solo in front of Brian Kelly. Later the Irish head coach extended an offer, and in less than 24 hours Newsome verbally committed to the program.

"My first thought was, 'You're not going to get an education and be able to play football anywhere else in the country like you would be able to here," Newsome said. "I talked to my family, but that was really where I wanted to be."

"There wasn't much thinking to it. It's a blessing."

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound product of Carrollton, Ga., had only one other offer -- from Air Force -- and made the decision on Friday to join the Irish recruiting class.

Newsome came to the camp at Notre Dame after learning through Kohl and Notre Dame special teams coordinator Scott Booker that the Irish were looking to give a scholarship to a punter and kickoff specialist. He proved himself on Thursday by winning contests in both.

In the punting competition, the players were given two attempts each to hit a 38-yarder with a 3.8-second hang time, a 40-yarder with 4-second hang time and a 42-yarder with a 4.2 hang time. Reaching those requirements put Newsome in a final three, and then he won the competition by booting the best ball of the trio.

He won the kickoff competition with kicks of 65 and 80 yards which bested the averages of the other kickers.

The pressure came during his audition in front of Kelly, punting coach Bob Diaco and other coaches.

"That was a little nerve-wracking," Newsome said. "But that's what it's going to be like in a game. I guess I did well enough for them to like me."

Newsome has yet to punt in a varsity game, but he has been kicking for Carrollton High since his sophomore season. He plans to add punting duties to his slate as a senior.

Newsome broke the news of his commitment on Twitter after arriving in Sherman Oaks, Calif., for an invite-only national camp hosted by Chris Sailer Kicking.

"Officially committed to the University of Notre Dame. What a blessing. #FightingIrish," Newsome wrote.

Chris Sailer Kicking ranks Newsome as the No. 33 kicker in the 2014 class and a 4.5-star prospect. Newsome said he hopes his performance at camp this weekend will improve his ranking.

Newsome is described as a "very talented kicker" on the Chris Sailer Kicking website.

"Punting may end up being his college strength," reads part of the review on Newsome. "One of the better combo prospects in the nation."

Newsome has worked with a number of kicking coaches including Sailer, Kohl and Mike McCabe.

Kohl Kicking ranks Newsome as the No. 6 punter in the 2014 class.

The commitment from Newsome gives Notre Dame's 2014 recruiting class 12 members. Newsome would become the first specialist to sign with the Irish since long snapper Scott Daly in 2012 and the first kicker since Kyle Brindza in 2011.

Comments:

1. Brian Kelly saw this kid and said that's the guy we want. That's good enough for me and we may have gotten a big "steal" based on some kicking/punting expert opinions.
2. Whiskey hit on the combo-specialists earlier in this thread. Reps.
3. Diaco is the punting coach???? Awesome.
4. You can't underestimate the importance of a good punter. It's an extension of the defense.

Everyone should be in stunned admiration of Kelly, once again, on this commitment and strategy. Coach gets one of the top kicking coaches in the nation to recommend the player, then personally watches over the fellow's form and flexibility and extension to judge potential --- and basically offers on the spot.

Whiskey has precisely nailed the strategy. The every third year double-kicking specialist, supported by high quality walk-ons [if the scholarship guy only gets one of the two skills right] is about as brilliant a scholarship-saving strategy, without too heavy a risk, as I could dream of.

Coach: you da man!

stunned admiration seems a little strong, this isn't an exactly uncommon practice. I believe Chris Sailer, known as the best in the business, was at the Alabama Camp when they evaluated and offered and received a commitment from JK Scott a couple weeks ago.

STL: loosen up. Channel your inner generosity. It will make you and everybody else feel better, trust me.

Coach doesn't have to be unique to be admirable.

Anybody know why scout has not even added him as a commitment? I thought I saw it in the tracker shortly after he committed and now there is no sign of it anywhere. Are they just that far behind in their updates?

Went from #33 to #9 on Chris Sailer Kicking, now a "5:s:" prospect

Tyler is an outstanding punting prospect. A big, tall, strong athlete that can hit a huge ball. He is showing great improvement every time we see him. Has the size and strength to dominate at this position at the college level. Also a top national kicking prospect. A top national combo prospect. A fine young man with a great attitude and work ethic. Excellent prospect. Nice pick up for ND!

#3 in the new Kornblue Kicking rankings. That's the top two kicking academies ranking him as a 5 :s:. I think we did alright.

FAB 50 KICKERS | Kornblue Kicking

Tyler is one of the Fab 50′s top punters in the class of 2014 and also has the ability to kick at a high level. Punts are becoming more consistently in the 4.5-4.9 range. He has a great frame for a Division 1 punter. Tyler is hard-working, respectful, and very coachable. As a junior, he showed potential but was inconsistent. His progress over the past year has been phenomenal.

Newsome went from unranked to the #1 Punter on the 247 composite rankings. I'm not sure when it happened, but both Scout and Rivals are showing him as a 3-star so I'm guessing their ranking bumped him up. He's still unranked by 247.

This is only significant because it pushed us back into the top 10 247 composite rankings. We had previously fallen from #7 to #11 with the Hood de-commitment, but now sit at #9.

Updated Tyler's Chris Sailer rankings.

He is a 5 star kicker and punter. Probably one of the very best at both. That's why he has had some ranking bumps.

I vote we place Kicker/Punter ratings as 3-5 stars instead of two on the main page. Two stars makes me a sad panda.

The issue with kickers, punters, etc. is that many schools can find adequate special teams performance from preferred walk-ons. Their "skills" are not 'scarce'. A 6' 6" 300LB 17 yr old, who can ball, on the other hand, is EXTREMELY scarce, and thus EXTREMELY valuable and their 4 & 5 star rankings reflect that.

Shits, we can't find adequate performance from our scholarship kickers. I get what you're saying though.

I don't care where he gets ranked or how many stars as long as he can kill the football with his foot.

what a weapon to have on kickoffs in high school...you know you're going to have to go 80 yards against his defense

Thinking the same thing...hope he can do it in College as well. Was also thinking it would stink being on the kick-off team wanting to go down and drill someone and the damn ball keeps going into the end-zone. It sure is "different" watching a kickers highlight film. was most impressed with some of those booming punts.
