Do we know if it's a GPA deal or a credits deal?

I've heard GPA is definitely a factor as I stated above, I'm unsure what the deal is with credits... but suffice to say most kids with a full year left to go in school still have a lot of credits to be taken, so it's probably quite early to be crossing that bridge. And while many are optimistic, I have a hard time seeing a kid who hasn't pulled decent grades his whole HS career suddenly being able to buckle down and pull As during football season. We've been down a similar path before with conditional offers and they almost never get their academic house together.

The encouraging thing is that if he wants it bad enough he'll put in the work in the classroom, and if he doesn't want it bad enough then he likely wouldn't have been able to hack the academics at ND and would've had to transfer anyways. I really, really hope it all works out... would be a great piece for this class.

An article from 11/23/12 noted:

He currently carries a 3.2 GPA and is scheduled to take the SAT in December.

2014 WR/KR Isaiah McKenzie, American Heritage Plantation, Florida | deepsouthrecruiting

Not everybody is aware that ND, and now the NCAA, requires 16 Core Courses in Math, English, etc. that comprise the Core Course GPA which sets the corresponding Test (ACT or SAT) Score on a sliding scale.

Many times recruits report their overall GPA which might be considerably higher than their Core Course GPA. Last season I recall a HS coach making a fuss because his player's GPA and Test Score were fine but the recruit wasn't admitted. The coach didn't specify "Core Course " GPA. Were that lower than the overall GPA, it would require a higher corresponding Test Score. This has happened a lot over the years. Some parents also get them confused and complain ND or the Clearinghouse wasn't fair to their kid. In reality they were working with the wrong set of numbers.

One would assume that a recruit is taking those 16 core courses spread out evenly over 4 years. Again frequently not so. Some (a lot) of kids take easier courses in the earlier HS years. Then they have to scramble to fit them all in during their last 2 or 3 semesters. If a recruit takes "Introduction To The Hand Held Calculator For Jocks" as one of his 4 required Math courses, it will not be accepted. He has to replace that class with Algebra, Geometry, Trig, etc. If he slid through 2 years of non-qualifying courses, his road is even steeper as a Jr and Sr to qualify.

A recruit may also have gotten "D" in both Algebra I and III. The Clearinghouse will accept that but ND Admissions as well as Stanford and a few other schools may require the recruit to repeat a weak class to show mastery of the material. Theey're going to need a sound foundation to compete in ND classrooms.

At this time of year many recruits may not have taken their ACT/SAT or their score may be deficient with their current Core Course GPA. Increasing the CC GPA can make a lower Test Score acceptable as the necessary for each individual is related on a sliding scale.

There are a number of possibilities and unless the recruit reveals the specifics to a reporter all we can do is speculate. There won't be a definitive answer.

Isaiah also returned the opening kickoff against Miami Central 45 yds. Three big plays kept Heritage in the game until the fourth quarter(55yd run by Dowels, 95yd return by McKenzie, and 80yd run from scrimmage by Gibson). These statistics tell the tale of last night's game - Joe Yearby 25 carries 238yds 2TD, Dalvin Cook 13 carries 142yds 4TD, and Sony Michel 13 carries for 60yds. Central's swarming defense dominated. Next week's Booker T vs Miami Central will have the best talent/team speed on a high school football field in America! Late in game, McKenzie was helped off field by teammates. Hopefully, it was just cramps. Lot of cramping in south Florida August heat.

Coach says 2014 FL WR Isaiah McKenzie (@JoyStick_izzy) would be "the top kid in country" if he was 6 feet.

Coach should also be aware of the old popular IE adage: if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.

Kid has amazing agility. Size is what he lacks. But hell, if he plays with the kind of heart he shows in HS, we should be taking him no questions asked.

IMO, reminds me of Mardy Gilyard. Could be the spark we've been looking for on punt/kick returns.

Was carted off the field on a stretcher during tonight's game. No diagnosis yet but reports of him being hit in the head. Say a prayer for Mr. McKenzie.

He's balling outta control. He's gonna be moving up the rankings regardless of size. I'm already excited to see his highlight reel at the end of the year.
