Random thinking on our tackles for 2013:
). Kelly is planning for 2013 not 2014. It's hard to wrap our minds around how firmly he holds to this, since most of us "sacrifice" something in the present towards our future vision all the time. Kelly doesn't. He goes for the "Now", and feels, just like "next man in", that the coaching, the system, and the stockpiled talents will take care of the future when that time comes.
). Therefore, Kelly/Hiestand see the line needing a rightside, and that side still not firmed up. One major variable in that crystallization is whether Lombard stays at RT or must move to guard. Since Lombard moving to guard is a possibility, Kelly/Hiestand must assess "if so, who is best, THIS YEAR, to put in there instead?" Their assessment apparently is: Ronnie Stanley, not Steve Elmer. So, when taking reps, it is Stanley taking RT reps, not Elmer, no matter who we think is better in this place or that in the future.
). My guess is that if one of us asked Harry Hiestand if he could turn Ronnie Stanley from a RT to a LT in one set of Spring/Fall practices, he'd look at us like we were buffoons. If asked if he could coach Elmer up into a very good LT, we would probably also be relegated to buffoon status in his mind.
). When 2014 arrives, Coach Hiestand will look at his tackles [Lombard, Stanley, Elmer, McGlinchey] and smile. HMMMM.... "how am I going to get all these horses some playing time?" .... and he'll think: "hard to imagine, but there are a bunch of Notre Dame fans who were worried about our 2014 tackles way back in summer 2013".
