I pretty much agree with this. It will be interesting to see if Martin can hold off Bivin at OC. If he does, Bivin will start somewhere else (LG). By 2015, our 2nd team OL is going to be hands down the best in the nation. What do you think about that kuehnja?

SHOCK!

In the 2nd Camp Post-Practice interview Kelly talked about needing to give some kids an opportunity to compete at different positions. He specifically mentioned that "we have talked a lot about the Right Guard, Right Tackle position" and said he needs to let Stanley some time there.

But I thought it was settled that he was a guard! It's almost as if this is NOT settled yet... so confusing.

Montelus will be Watt's replacement. Future stud at LG.

I'll be stubborn and call (actually expecting what you said for 2013):

2013

2014

The best OL will still be ______. You know my vote.

I've seen both Montelus and Bivin play in person on several occasions. No comparison.

Means nothing given potential differences in competition/coaching/focus in HS. World of difference between HS in 2012 and college in 2014.

Well, while I agree A LOT can happen between 2012 and 2014, 2015, etc, and there are some variables in the environment in which I saw them play, I think it means something. I can't totally discount what I've seen. But, we'll see what happens.

Montelus is a massive talent and if for some reason isn't a starter I would like his 340 lbs give NG a shot. Gotta have him on the field somehow.

I just want to see all these guys have a chance to develop. Not just so they can be the best players they can be. There is a point that is not made often enough. For skill players, especially those under 200lbs, it is one thing, but for guys 300lbs and up it is another. Conditioning at that weight is crucial to avoid stress related and repetition related injuries. From shin splints to sprains and strains. When a big guy gets behind the eight-ball on some of these condition related issues, nothing good usually happens, and often one bad thing after another does. Here is to hoping, as great as we are all sure they will turn out, that as many of these guys get that extra year of conditioning as possible.

- Kelly noted that they are looking for the 5 best lineman
- Some guys, like Zach Martin, play any position
- Lombard has the versatility to slide inside
BUT
- Long guys, like Stanley and Elmer, have a harder time sliding inside.

Hmmm.... sounds to me like he is preparing everyone, including Lombard, for Stanley to start at RT. :)

It's nice to get some insight into how the staff projects these guys. Sounds like superior footwork/ balance is the most desirable trait for OT, and the "length" we all drool over in recruits actually limits one's versatility.

I may be misunderstanding your statement but I don't think that length and therefore limit of versatility makes the recruit any less desirable. See Elmer who I've read the staff thinks is one of the best lineman they've recruited doesn't have that flexibility. They still recruit Tackle only players and then others that can play OT/OG like Nelson

Yep I agree. 6'4" or taller with long reach and good footwork is ideal for a tackle but difficult to slide them in to a guard position.

I think he is saying that it limits versatility, but that does not mean the kid is less desirable if he is a stud. However, a 6'4" 295 lb. OT recruit maybe ideal for college since he can slide in or out.

That said, we would definitly take 5 Zach Martins a year if we could!

Dunno if this was addressed anywhere else, but Ronnie suffered a concussion in practice on Wed. He is expected to return on Monday.

In the meantime, Steve Elmer has been lining up at RT and Kelly stated that he "hasn't settled on a final five for the offensive line."

"We're still working through that," Kelly said. "It's not something we're ready to commit to."

Kelly also praised true freshman Steve Elmer, who has worked at various offensive line positions during camp and should see significant playing time this season.

“We like both [Stanley and Elmer] and they’re both really good. There are some younger players now that are physically able to compete at a high BCS level. That’s surprising.”

Ronnie and Elmer give us a pair of young true anchors for the future of the OLine.. exciting times ahead with the kind of mammoths we are bringing in. Havent seen this sort of competition across the line in a long time.

As long as Lombard is lining up at RG it's fine with me. Elmer is a true phenom on the line, and so is Stanley. Either at RT would be ideal.

You never, ever want to start a true frosh on the OL. Even someone with as much talent and upside as Elmer. Hopefully Ronnie gets back in action as expected and locks down the spot.

This.

That's just asking to get your QB killed.

you might be able to get away with playing a young guy on the interior line, but i agree i wouldn't bank on it....they're are a few exceptions of course (Orlando Pace comes to mind)

Only recent one I can remember that had success was Theus. The rest usually get mauled.

Out of necessity, Sam Young started as a freshman at right tackle. Made first team freshman All American. That second year, however, was a disaster. It began with Georgia Tech, and Notre Dame's OL inability to keep the Ramblin' Wrecks off of redshirt freshman Demetrius Jones. Chased Jones from the field(and from the university), and true freshman Jimmy Clausen entered the game to receive more of the same treatment. How many times was Clausen rushed and sacked his freshman year? I wonder if Sam Young has an answer to that question!

A couple of years ago, Georgia started 2 true Frosh and 1 redshirt Frosh, and actually did quite well, I was very impressed with what they were able to do that year......but every situation is different, we'll have to wait and see how this plays out!!
