This is totally odd. I really thought Stevens would stay at Butler his whole career. Not sure how I feel about it if I'm a Celtics fan, but definitely sucks for Butler.

Why don't you guys like this hire?

I have no particular opinion on it, I think Stevens' is a great college basketball coach. I never really thought about him leaving Butler/to the NBA of all places. I'm excited to see how it shakes out, but I hope for Stevens' case his career doesn't go the same route as Pitino (great college coach who leaped to the NBA and struggled).

If it does maybe ND can hire him on the rebound :)

It would be stupid for Brad Stevens not to leave Butler for the NBA

He was making less than a million a year and now he could be making millions a year.

Butler wasn't exactly a power house in basketball anyway.

My friend works under Pat Haden. When they were looking for a coach, he asked her to go to the Bookstore to get USC gear for young children...they didn't know what coach they were doing it for. So the workers eavesdropped when the coach called and heard Pat say "OK Brad, see you then." Haden then boarded a flight and met with Stevens and his family. This was right after Brad had said he wasn't leaving Butler. I knew then that he was gone sooner rather than later, despite his love for Butler and the small-town feel of the university and the people there.

But never in a million years did I think it would be for the Celtics! And a rebuilding job at that. I'm shocked by this...

At what point does it stop becoming all about money though? Stevens was (or so many thought) very happy at Butler.

It comes down to what you want out of a job: Comfort and admiration from all the fans, which he had at Butler, or maximum earnings, which he will get at the Celtics. His job security will be nowhere near what it was at Butler where he was a king for getting them to two championship games.

To put it into perspective, you said "making less than a million a year" as if it were a bad thing. Sounds like a nice life to me where you can make hundreds of thousands of dollars in an area where the cost of living is relatively cheap and you are beloved by your coworkers, bosses, and fan base.

But he traded that to test his hand at the NBA, so I wish him good luck

Thats pretty cool you got that info.

Yeah, of all the jobs for him to have taken this is not the one you'd expect.

I really like Stevens, and hope he does well in Boston.

He's inheriting a mess, so the first two seasons could be used cutting his teeth in the NBA.

Been a big Brad Stevens fan for a while. Very happy for him. I am sad for Butler as this is a program killer, but everybody knew, or should have, that if he kept winning he wouldn't stay at Butler. Surprised it wasn't another college program that lured him away. Good for Brad.

If he fails or hates it, he'll have his pick of NCAA jobs once again. This time with a much bigger bank account. The guy can flat coach.

Tough luck for Butler.

As a Xavier alum who has lost Sean Miller and Thad Matta I am laughing so much. Butler may be 8th or 9th in the big east this next year and cant recruit anyways. This is so awesome.

He should have time to learn. Everybody knows this is a rebuilding project. He also has a nba mind based on the sabermetrics movement in pro basketball. That is why he was able to get low to mediocre basketball players to perform so exceptionally.

Boston is arguably the most storied basketball team of all-time. I highly doubt he leaves to coach the Hawks
or Grizzlies, but maybe he really wanted a crack at the NBA. He did turn down UCLA.

So he is like the basketball version of Jonah Hill?

kind of except that he hasnt hit puberty yet and he is only 36 years old. Some see him similar to Spoelstra. I'm not a fan because he coached for Butler but he would be a great NBA coach maybe even better than a college coach.
