Instead of STL's rep bar saying that he "should be giving advice to Kelly," it should say something like "should take over for Loy."

lol unfortunately that would never happen, the posters on 247 hate me mainly because most of my posts are calling out star69 and NDGuyInFL, aka the guys they think know everything but are full of ****. Loy is okay, there should be two of them though, he still has to do UNC and FSU recruiting.

Do you think you have a better chance of advising Kelly?

Wait... so... this kid is really good?

Depends what you mean by really good? Is this kid the next great college DE? No. But could he serve a valuable role on a big, physical defense? I think so. I think he is as smooth as a 6'8" 16-17 year is going to be and you can't be mad at his size. Perhaps I was misleading when I said that I "really like this kid" but if he wanted to commit I would hope that we would accept his commitment.

Who are these big name DE's that everyone is talking about? McDowell is the only name that I can think of that fits, and he is going to Michigan barring an Alabama power swipe.

Carter, Williams, etc are all CAT prospects, and we are going to take one NG regardless. But as for DE, who else is out there that can match Matt in upside or versatility, which the staff covets?

I know this is a old post but there is Solomon Thomas, Myles Garret and Thomas Holley as well

I seriously don't understand why we don't have a full court press on Holley. I want Nelson much more knowing Stanford is in it big for him and leads.

Holley is in no hurry, will take visits in fall and I think ND is more than fine with that time table given their interest in other DL. As to Nelson I love his upside. Has split his time between basketball and football and only now is making a full time commitment to football. Reminds me of Henry Anderson of Stanford who will be playing in the NFL after next season.

The next time a 6'8 guy plays defense will be the first. Yes I know some outliers are close but they have STRIKINGLY different frames. I wish him well and hope I am way off, but this is a basketball player IMHO.

Margus Hunt does not have a STRIKINGLY different frame.

Margus Hunt was an elite field athlete with a strikingly wide and strong frame. Nelson looks much different, although I think his potential is sky high. Like I said earlier, I thought he could be a great TE, and that athleticism should translate well to the DL. After watching his defensive tape, I'm psyched about this kid's potential, but he's not a world-record-setting field athlete like Hunt at this point.

I know it's sports and we all have opinions, but with all do respect I disagree. That is like saying Nelson and niklas are the same.

Nelson is in high school and Hunt is 25. Agreed that they aren't at the same point yet. Nelson is exciting because he so athletic at 6'8", as you say. I actually think he will be bigger than Hunt. They aren't the same player. Only point is that I don't agree that it would be surprising based on his height to see him succeed on defense

Here's Hunt at 18/19 years old (go to 1:00 mark): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vcO5DRxP6c

It doesn't look like he has a 'strikingly wide and strong frame'.

Regarding Nelson, I'll take a Division 1 scholarship basketball player over a field athlete any day. I love his athleticism and versatility. He is ranked #12 as a TE and if he were ranked instead as a SDE, he would probably be our 3rd ranked target behind Solomon Thomas and McDowell.

I hope we get Nelson.

And in addition to Martini and Trumbetti, get Dillon Bates, Christian McCaffrey, and keep Collinsworth for a 5th year.

Still Top 3 of ND, Stanford and Iowa. His first visit to ND "blew him away" and he is returning tomorrow, staying until Sunday. Called it a "business trip" and it will be heavily focused on academics. Closest to Coach Elliott because he is an Iowa guy.

What position would he be at ND and his offers are ehhh not the best.

DE. Every recruit can't be a 4 :s: or 5 :s: recruit. You have to take chances on some kids that fly under the radar. If they pan out and are productive then it is a success, if not the team always needs role players.

As an example, Alabama has had several players commit over the last two years that have sub standard offer lists:

O.J. Smith - Yahoo! Sports
Walker Jones - Yahoo! Sports
Parker McLeod - Yahoo! Sports
Cole Mazza - Yahoo! Sports
Brandon Hill - Yahoo! Sports

Don't think he will, he is really excited to visit Stanford.

Yeah I think we need to make up ground on this visit to have shot. Stanford definitely leads. Think I decision should come one way or another shortly after this visit.

Great. point. You need superstars and glue guys. If you only recruit superstars, then you won't have the depth you need, because either you'll miss on a lot of the superstars or they'll transfer if they don't play right away. Matt Nelson could be what Kelly has called in the past a "program kid."

Exactly. Obviously Bama and other SEC schools that participate in over-signing can take more risks than schools like ND and Stanford but the point still remains.

This will be his first visit to Stanford, part of the reason he is so excited. They've been recruiting him for awhile and thats why most consider them to be the leaders. While I agree that I think they are currently, I also think we win out this weekend. He won't verbal then but it will put us out front. He'll be able to put the academics, relationships, proximity to home, and football all together.

Didn't Coach Diaco play at UI?
