As did most people. The show only ran for 2 seasons.

A couple of #1 hits

A couple of platinum albums

And real musicians behind them in the recording booth

Long before Milli Vanilla was even a twinkle

Thats what I never got about the Monkees. They were fakes, the show was terrible yet the Monkees impaled the public conscience long past relevancy. Must be a 60s thing I suppose.

60's thing? They were prefab, packaged, and the Spice Girls weren't in the 90's? Most "hit" groups were "managed".

The show was a take off of the Beatles movie "A Hard Day's Night". The Marx Brothers on Rock n Roll. The sound was mostly sing along, catchy bubblegum music that started at least back in the 50's.

IF the Monkees impaled the public conscience long past relevancy what does Reality TV do? Bridezilla and Ice Road truckers only boost the conscience of the walking dead.

The "sound" was due to Don Kirschner's choice of writers and producers. Jones was an actor in London and on Broadway. Ironically he was on the Ed Sullivan Show with the cast of Oliver, he was the Artful Dodger, the same night the Beatle's were on for their American debut.

When the group was put together Dolenz had the best voice but nobody played drums. Jones was put on drums but due to his height the camera couldn't see him so he was moved to lead singer and Dolenz put on drums.

After the Monkees rebelled against Kirschner's iron fist, Kirschner moved on to create the Archies with more #1 hits. But Kirschners made the Archies an animated group so there woudn't be another rebellion.

You don't think Davy's british accent had anything to do with the sound? Writer's and Producers sing with a British accent? I don't think so.

Less one.

The Monkees' Davy Jones dead at 66 - CNN.com

Ask your parents ... or grandparents.

You can ask me. I volunteer as surrogate parent/grandparent. Yes, they were a contrived group. Yes, the songs they recorded were primarily Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart post Tin Pan Alley constructions.

There was one truly talented musician in the bunch – Michael Nesmith. He "predicted" a more contemporary style by constantly wearing a knit hat. Check him out.

He wrote the song, "Different Drum," that launched Linda Ronstadt's career and also aided The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with "Some Of Shelly's Blues. He also had a brief post Monkees career with The First National Band.

Mike Nesmith and The First National Band - Joanne - Nice Early 70's Pop / Country Ballad - YouTube

I can't say that I'll miss Davy all that much, but I do mourn his passing. He and the Monkees were a part of my high school years.

I didn't mean impaled the public conscience in a bad way. I guess what I meant to say, I am surprised that the Monkees were able to stake their claim in pop history even though they didn't even sing their own music and it is incredible given how many prepacked fad bands have been crushed by the anvil of history.

Actually I was impressed with "impaled the public conscience". As an lifelong Independent I intend to sneak that phrase into conversation with both my Democrat and Republican friends during this election cycle.

Actually some of The Monkees stuff is their own as noted by dshans. Nesmith was a decent songwriter but The Monkees had to battle for every note or lyric that was theirs.

I love The Monkees, I'm not your steppin stone. :)

I have a crush on a few old farts, like Sean Connery, but not Davey Jones, if something ever happens to David Cassidy though, I might have to take a day off work. ha

B.S. Tad. You were just like a second grader like me, when the conversation went like this:

"Who do you like more the Beatles or the Monkeys?"

"The Beatles!"

"Yuck. No way, the Monkeys"

"Did you ever see either of them? Girls really like 'em. No way. I don't like either one of 'em."

"Yeah!"

While the slightly older boys like dshans would play the Beatles to get the chicks . . .

Along with The Stones, Van Morrison, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, etc.

(dshans: Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man!)

Two things I didn't hear anything about in this thread:

Teenyboppers;

Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkeys in the deep south durring their US tour. I ain't sayin' it was a mistake, but a large lefthanded, sweating, half-nekid black man making love to his guitar, in front of a bunch of young whipped up white girls, most of whom were debutants, in the mid-60's! What was wrong with the marketing here? In a strange sort of way, this experience, (I believe), set him on the path to greatness. By the Monterey Jazz Fest a little over a year later, he was KING. And then two years after that:

Teenyboppers

Ahhh ... but many of those teenyboppers became hippie chicks (!), possibly because of their exposure to Hendrix.

Speculation on my part: perhaps the promoters saw Jimi as part of "The British Invasion" because of his popularity while he was in England before he made his mark in the States.

If so, they clearly hadn't bothered to check him out. The rest, as they say, is history.

No idea.

But I do know Stephen Stills auditioned for The Monkees and didn't get asked back.

Fortunately.
