Well my thought process was that Michigan is much more hated by the ND fanbase than Stanford. Am I correct in making that assumption? I'd say many ND fans hate Michigan almost as much as they do USC. Some probably even hate Michigan more than they hate USC.
I think Michigan fans grossly overstate Michigan's important when it comes to ND. USC is the clear cut #1 rival, Michigan is in an amorphous blob with about 4-5 other schools for the #2 spot.
As for "hate"... I think it's quite regional. I grew up on the east coast and Michigan fans I ran into tended to be alumni and normal people. I had no inkling that the Michigan "rivalry" even remotely involved "hate"... and when I applied to schools with both parents being ND alumni we looked at Michigan with zero prejudice... the same way I looked at Cornell or Georgia Tech or Northwestern... my parents never once implicitly or explicitly expressed "hate" for Michigan. When my best friend decided he was going to USC on a full ride, my dad said I wasn't allowed to be friends with him anymore.
In the Midwest, there seems to be an awful lot of mouth breathers that are downright obnoxious and I think the "hate" for ND fans living in Michigan and nearby is definitely a lot higher. And I can definitely understand it. Whenever I read mgoblog it's just laughable/infuriating how uneducated and annoying a large chunk of posters are towards everything ND. Stuff like "they play a schedule full of cupcakes" and the like would drive me crazy if I had to listen to that ignorance daily.
And once I learned the history of ND-Michigan... you know, Michigan chickening out of games when we beat them, having a racist anti-Catholic coach as one of their "legends," blocking ND from the Big Ten and trying to get other schools to not schedule ND, etc.... I do understand the "hate" quite a bit more. And with Brady Hoke running his mouth like he has an IQ of 8 I'm slowly but surely moving more and more each day from ambivalence to strong dislike. There was a time not too long ago when I would root for Michigan to beat Ohio State in football because OSU is our "rival" for lacrosse dating back to the GWLL and I wanted to see them fail at everything... that's not the case anymore.
But do I, or anyone else, care if Michigan gets a good player now that we'd only see the prospect once as a true frosh? No, not really. Not unless it's a direct steal from ND.
