Most telling quote from Kiel:

I just didn’t want to run the scout team anymore.

That interview lowered my opinion of him somewhat.

Can't really put my finger on it but it did for me as well. Some it sounded like he was complaining and expected it to be given to him. He is such an exceptional athlete, I imagine he'll succeed eventually but every player that has spoken about Martin has had glowing things to say about him and his coaching. Makes me think it's Gunner and not Martin.

It was a combination of individual things that aren't anything big, but weaved together makes a tapestry of douchiness. The not wanting to run the scout team anymore quote came off as whiny. The lack of relationship with Coach Martin seemed 100% honest and fine, but the way he talked about the UC depth chart was not. Noting depth chart was important and then saying no one is going to be ahead of him, then back pedaling a little when he realized he just dissed the other QB 's on the roster then doing the obligatory "competition" remark. The I can run any offense quote I thought would usually be okay, since you want that confidence in a quarterback, but combined with the rest of the interview, it probably added to the air of feminine hygiene products.

Kiel wants the starting QB job handed to him. He has to earn it at a major program. Suck it up and compete, or keep transferring, son.

If you can't handle the heat, get the f*ck out of the kitchen. I don't care what his rank was, did he just expect everyone to roll over in front of him?

That will give me a chance to compete without anyone in front of me.

He better hope Dad buys an NFL team and fires all the QBs before the draft.

This guy (Kiel). He must think his last name is Montana.

Sorry Wooly, I wanted it to work out too, but the young man has put himself out there for some observational criticism.

"i dont want to run the scout team"

So what the flip is going to be doing at Cincy this season? Filling water bottles?

He saw the writing on the wall with Golson. He saw the last part of last year, and in winter workouts. Does it say something about his will to compete? Probably. You want QBs to have the mindset that its their job and they are out to win it. I do think that the person running his recruiting/decisions made some poor decisions, and thats why I feel the kid needs to be in control over it. From what I have been told, he wasn't going to be the #2 and probably not the #3 QB this year, so in that sense I can't blame him for looking else where. A weak QB class made him more valuable in 2012 and like its said all the time, if someone isnt happy somewhere they dont play to the best of their ability. Gunner is a great kid and I wish him all the best, esp in 2014 when Cincy plays osu, but ND is going to the top with or without him. The biggest thing is, his transfer put them a year behind on QB recruiting and development.

I understand, but could that be a fair trade off with selecting a better '14 or '15 quarterback than we would have otherwise gotten, and providing more time and resources for developing Zaire who looks to have a far greater upside than we ever thought?

Also, I was quite impressed with the respectfulness of that last article quoted toward ND.

And as far as Keil. I never had warm and fuzzies about the kid, (except the spring game a year ago when he and Golson switched numbers.) I don't know. I saw what he said in this article exactly consistent with what he has said and done since he was a senior in high school.

Lou at BGI is always good for some crazy stat or knowledge bomb you've never heard before. ND has had a QB transfer every 1.5 years since 1977. Thought that was interesting.

Why is anybody upset about this. The writing was on the wall for him he wasn't good to start in this program so he left. Good luck to him. Don't see the need to pile on him.

Kiel saying he wants to compete rings hollow to me. His history says otherwise. This guy doesn't want to compete. Coach Martin and Coach Kelly weren't going to just hand him the quarterback job. He's free to leave and go elsewhere, and I wish him well. But he should be honest about why he is leaving. Anyone want to predict his 5th school if he doesn't start at Cincinnati in his first year of eligibility?
