Brian Kelly told Nelson to take all the time he needed, that Notre Dame was willing to wait until signing day for the four-star offensive lineman.
“He said ‘Take all the time you want because we have a spot in February,’ and when I heard that it made me feel much more wanted.’
“But even if he didn’t say that I still would have committed.”
The two ended the call without a commitment. However, a minute later, Nelson called back and told Kelly he thought about it and was ready to join the Irish’s 2014 class.
First and foremost the coaching staff,” said Nelson, reeling off reasons for his verbal pledge. “I’ve gotten to know Coach Kelly a little more from talking to him. I love [offensive line] Coach [Harry] Hiestand’s coaching style and how he coaches, and Coach [Chuck] Martin is a great offensive coordinator. They have the No. 1 business school, love the campus, and it was the best fit for me academically, spiritually and athletically.”
He and fellow four-star commit Sam Mustipher, the No. 11 guard nationally, could end up playing together on the line, which both feel would make for one dominant side of the offensive line.
The two recently worked together at a camp and participated in a two-on-two drill, and Nelson said it was eerie how in sync the two already are.
“We didn’t have to even communicate when the defensive linemen stunted,” Nelson said. “We knew what we were doing. It was magical.”
