Article up on 247 ...

Definitely will take OVs to Bama and SC

We told him when we visited him last week that he is the top NT on our board and that we think he could take over for Nix right away as a true frosh.

Mom likes TAMU and Ark. Frazier is trying to get her to open up to other schools.

GUSHED about Bama and how he feels that's the school where he has the best opportunity to become the best NT he can be, even if he has to redshirt. If I had to guess I'd say he's Bama's to lose. I'm not sure we'll even get a visit.

Its only one article and one interview but I had the same takeaways that you did. I'm assuming there is a long way to go here but not a positive one for the good guys.

It all starts with a visit.

If we can get him to set a visit, we've shown we can beat Alabama with DL. Eddie Vanderdoes.

“@GregO_ESPN: DT Matt Elam, skyped with Saban today. RT @FballIsLife69: Coach Nick Saban Said I'm The Best Player In My Position!!! #Bama #RollTide”

“@JoshuaFrazier99: Great seeing Notre Dame and Alabama at my School today!!! Weird just this past year they were both in the National Championship and now...”

“@JoshuaFrazier99: They both said I was Number 1 defensive Tackle they wanted!! I'm honored I'm a 5 star in there eyes.”

Something smells...

I think he is just pointing out the contradiction in telling Frazier he was their #1 and telling the other kid he was their #1.

Couldn't Bama just spin it as they dont project the two to be the same position?

Of course, Bama can and will do whatever it takes to get these kids and win but that doesn't mean its right. Saban doesn't give a **** about his players, he wants to win and lying is part of his game.

Poster on II started a thread about Josh. He said that he read an article on another site that stated Josh is interested in ND and we are very interested in him. But the in order to get into ND he has to take one year of foreign language which he hasn't done. At this time he is unsure whether or not he is going to take that class as ND is the only school recruiting him that requires that. Unsure of the validity of this statement as the poster on II didn't say where he read it from but this wouldn't be the first time we've heard this so it doesn't came as a surprise to me. The point of bringing it here is, it seems one year of foreign language is meaningless in the grand scheme of things and this could be a way to level the playing field. Thoughts?

Do they not require that to graduate from high school?

Nearly every College at ND requires proficiency in a foreign language (3 semesters). Not having a background in one foreign language is a recipe for disaster in the classroom. If we drop that requirement, I guarantee you we'll see players leave the team for academic reasons more often.

Given, foreign language may not be the reason why a player struggles academically but the ability to speak/read/understand another language is often indicative of overall language skills. It suggests a certain grasp of the English language if one can pick up another language. The best thing I ever did for my English skills was to take 2 years of Latin in grade school - it forced me to really understand participles, direct objects, indirect objects, verb tenses, etc. because you have to be able to translate the Latin to English and vice versa. You can't decline a noun properly if you don't know how nouns are used in English.

I guess my point is that most of the ND football players may never use a foreign language post graduation, but developing that skill in high school is a good predictor of academic success at ND.

don't know what it is now but in New York in the '96 when I graduated HS, 3 years of foreign language was needed.

Foreign language requirement in it's simplest form is a joke. Took 4 years of French and it was a huge waste. I would have been better served taking other classes. ANY other classes. Now if you want to talk about a language that should be required, that would be Spanish for obvious reasons. For everyone.... I was a pretty much a straight A guy in HS and loved academics, but boy I wish I had that time back (French).

I have heard that because all tests have cultural context, psychologists have long theorized and some real heavyweights like CIA agree, that the most basic and natural indicator of intelligence is the ability to grasp and learn languages. Although I hope that this is not true, Me espanol is sub paro.

That goes without saying. I'm not a woman. Duh!

I loathed the 3 semesters of Spanish I had at ND. But I'll be damned if I didn't need it in Barcelona when my buddy and I left our directions on a bus and the bus driver didn't speak any English.

If ND dropped the requirement for athletes but then required them to take it in college, that would be a disaster. Imagine taking a foreign language for the first time with some students who have had 3-4 years of the language already. Hell there was a girl in my Spanish class who was taking it AS HER THIRD LANGUAGE! She was majoring in Arabic and Chinese. It's a significant disadvantage to start that unprepared. And as I argued above, it could impact one's English skills to have exposure to a foreign language.

I hope Josh decides to take a year of any foreign language for his own benefit at the very least. Hopefully that snowballs into him committing to ND too.

Does English count. Based on how these kids write online it certainly should!
