I think we can effectively say the scrimmage stunk if 60% of the posts in this thread are about Teo wearing a hat backwards.

Can't believe some of u were critizing Manti for how he dressed in the middle of the spring game, seriously who gives a **** on how he dresses? One of the dumbest discussions I've seen in my 16 months on IE.

Wasn't impressed with offense, of course there were some bright spots.

Gotta be able to complete a pass to the flats. Didn't really see that "game breaker" like GAIII was at last years game. Other than Nix, that is. Lol

D was solid. Made some plays. I expect big things from Ishaq this year off the edge.

irishpat as a supporter of any argument is pretty much the IE kiss of death.

I don't think ESPN watched the game, or read some of the more reactionary comments here lol:

Will watch again tonight. I'm still disturbed by the throat slashing. Wtf does that mean and why is it being tolerated?

Watt woke up with a stiff neck and didn't play as precaution. No other injuries to speak of. Always good news heading out of spring ball.

I'd like to apologize for wearing my ND hats backwards and representing The university, fans, athletes, students, alums, and faculty in an unpleasant way.

Go Irish!

More from hatgate:

He was a wearing a Miami hat. Could this mean he will be drafted? By the Marlins?

Offense certainly looked mediocre at best. But how much did that have to do with the D-line? That's our best and deepest squad, no?

A small number of observations until a second watching of the game:

1}. The first string defense won the game. They stifled the offense the vast majority of plays. Most decent O-Plays were against second team defenders. Several "coverage sacks" occurred. This is to be expected --- we are a great defense.

2}. ZMart nevertheless was great; Tuitt was almost a non-factor. Kelly joked with Tuitt about this, and Tuitt told him he was "a gamer". Kelly laughed, and this shows us two things: ZMart is almost impossible to do well against, and both Kelly and Stephon know it, and Coach and Stephon have a great relationship.

3}. Ronnie Stanley has practiced enough GUARD play that he was able to take ALL Chris Watt's snaps at LG when Chris couldn't go. He did OK on pass protection, but there was almost no running room for any back. Still, this illustrates that the OLine is even more versatile now than we thought if Stanley can also play guard. Lombard seemed solid. Hanratty received praise for a block which while effective was one of the least athletic-looking hip-bump affairs I've seen.

4}. McDaniel made a great play, though IE anti-cam will try somehow to take it away from him doubtless. McDaniel also was decisive in his cuts, but without many blocks no one could effectively run. GAIII looked like he was willing to hit it hard at the line, but did not look like he had improved much in running style or receiving game.

5}. Jarrett Grace was all over the place defensively showing his legendary good ball instincts. KMoore on the other hand was exposed on play-action pass coverage, showing the reason why he does not get in the mix.

6}. Nix was Nix. BIG trouble for any line. Surprisingly Stockton had a very good game, but some of this had to be the depleted, almost-experimental, second team OLine.

7}. TJ was solid as always; Davaris occasionally decided to show up. Niklas looks like he could develop into a force. Generally the WRs couldn't get open vs the DBacks --- as always in intersquad games this is both good and bad news.

8}. Brindza's first two punts were ok; after that, punting stunk. Tausch seemed to remember how to kick FGs.

9}. All I can think of off the top of my head. Tommy still looked like a cool old gunslinger as he should. Kelly looked astoundingly relaxed and happy. This last is the biggest thing to take away from the game: Kelly KNOWS WE'RE GOOD.

Cam McDaniel is going to be a solid situational player. Davaris is going to have a above average season and I personally think ND defensive front seven is going to be as good if not better than last years line

C'mon Mike...don't hate. :) Maybe it's a sign or maybe it was a nice Junior Jabbie moment.

My Top 10 takeaways from the game: 4-20 edition.

1. Golston has room to improve, but he looks like he

2, I like the new guy in the booth

3: Brady Quinn is handsome

1. Golson. But, yes, he looks like he's coming along.

2. Absolutely. This is a really good crew now.

3. Duh.

{Jayhawk}: I'll ignore that.

One other memory coming though not from gameplay: Mayock said that Elmer had already gotten himself INTO THE TOP SEVEN on the OLine. { It sounded like he meant ZMart/ Watt/ NMart/ Lombard/ Hanratty/ Elmer/ and Stanley. }

Mayock sounded simply straightforward about this as if it were a fact. He then went on to talk about Stanley's versatility and Lombard maybe moving down to guard.

If true, this adds weight to some intuitions that we have felt about a lot of things, including the RG position, whether Elmer redshirts, Hegarty's readiness, etc.

I honestly think it may be the other way around. I think Cam might be THE back and GAIII is still just a situational guy.

Also, I know we all love Diaco, but I'm beginning to question his ability to coach punters...
