Definitely not bridge jumping over this but I do think this is a pretty big deal. Not just from a production standpoint but from a number and depth perspective. How nice would it have been if we would have known this a couple of months ago. Three extra recruits for last years class. Part of me is a little pissed that they all jump ship now leaving us with so much space.

This is transfer season. Spring camp is when the depth chart for next season starts to sort itself out.

What is the difference between taking a kid to daycare while one goes to work/school and taking a kid to family members while one work/school?

can be huge...how many kids are at daycare? How many at grandma's (hopefully not that many).

Can't compare Family helping to third party...not even close. Hell most daycares have a business motive...that does not square with nurturing a kid.

Do I believe DN made a decision to do what is best for his child...hope so, but doesn't seem so.

Agreed but they have asperations to win what 7 maybe 8 games this year and we want to be playing for NC's every year. This certaintly doesn't help depth. Knock on wood but all we need is an injury bug to make the receiving core look very young.

It was going to look young anyway. Daniels is a RS Sophomore and Brown is a true Sophomore. Jones is the only vet that was certain to start.

on an unrelated note....do we think these recievers (Neal, Ferguson) may had hoped to have Gunner be their QB long term-and when he left it gave them one more thing to consider in their transfer decision?

Possible, but I doubt it. Why stake your athletic career on a QB who wasn't good enough to start?

He would tear it up in RichROds system.

Absolutely, and Arizona seems like the most likely landing place, as he picked ND over the Wildcats. Kelly won't let Neal transfer to anyone who's on an upcoming schedule, which counts out ASU and USC. I suppose UCLA and Cal are possibilities, but my money's on Arizona. D!ckRod certainly knows how to utilize small speedy athletes.

"It takes a village to raise a child." No? Never heard that one? Growing up, my parish priest used that proverb in his homilies probably four times a year. I'm definitely surprised that you seem to take exception to the idea here.

Now, expecting your child's grandparents to relieve you from the responsibility of parenting is different ... that's clearly not ok. But for one thing, it's not clear that that's what's going on with Davonte. There's actually no evidence that that's what's going on with Davonte. And for another thing ... expecting help from family is not ok? I don't see that. My wife and I live far from any family and I'd freaking love it if they were around to help more. Further, if they lived here I would definitely expect that they would want us to involve them in caring for our kids.

oh geesh...I'm talking about being the primary and 24/7/365 caregiver here as the responsbility of the parent and no one else.
of course i want family, grandparents others involved in my kids lives. and they are and have always been. they need to be. of course theyve babysat my kids or had my kids to "grandma/grandpa" house, the whole bit.
but there is big difference between that and having family other than the parent living and be expected to deal with a child on a daily basis as the primary caregiver.

I have been around daycares so I know the better ones cost a pretty penny.

I was just trying to point out that whether its family or strangers someone is going to have to help raise the kid.

i havent read all the details about why DN is leaving(apparently to be closer to his baby/family)....but, my initial thought is, if caring for my family was paramount in my life, I think staying at Notre Dame and getting a degree would do more for my family than just about any other thing I could do at that age. To me, leaving Notre Dame doesnt equate to 'better for my family'.

as I always say in these situations, lets 'cut the cord' and look forward to where this program is headed, and not where it was.

IMO a true "ND Man" (as some like to say here) would:
get married to the mother and move momma and baby up to South Bend raise the kid themselves while DN continued on with his education. that would be taking full responsibility for your actions.

my take on all this:
like so many "kids having kids" these days the real reason he is moving back to be "close with family" is this:

DN and baby momma are gonna get close to extended family so they can have the babys grandmas, grandpas take care of the kid for devonte and his babby momma.

I think this is part of the problem with the people who have attacked Davonte's character so far. You're looking at it from a purely selfish point of view, have you considered that the mother might not want to get married and move up to South Bend, away from her home and family?

Do you have kids? Family support is invaluable. I don't know how my wife and I would get by without it.

Here my youngest (3- 7, 9, 10 ) have me and then my parents are both gone. My son (30) would help but he and his wife are expecting their second any day . . . I am supposed to take their kids! See where this is leading?

Hey Whiskey, I would like to hook up on some of that grandparently babysitting you were speaking about! LOL!

I actually prefer a professional daycare watch my kid than a family member. That's a TON of responsibility and pressure to put on the family member and there are always things you dislike about how your kid is being treated and taught. I'd rather that responsibility be on a trained professional of exceptional quality (making the distinction between good and bad daycares) than a family member.

I send my kid to Montessori School and he gets tons of interaction with other kids, daily lessons, provided healthy meals, and a safe secure environment. Yes, it's expensive as hell but totally worth it in my opinion. I love my mom and everything but my son's school is working out very, very well.

Also, we had a nanny for awhile and it was very inconsistent, she'd call in, or change locations, etc. The school is consistent and quality.

I have a 4 and 2 yr old and they go to one of the better daycares in the area (small christian daycare attach to a private school) and we spent over 15k last yr on daycare and thats actually not to bad compared to others. IDK how a college kid and girlfriend could afford it.

When you're teenage parents, you need all the help you can get.

Yeah but you can right off daycare on your taxes..... A real ND man would do that

or pay for it in pre-tax dollars out of a flex spending account ... actually, I'll put Davonte in touch with my accountant. Maybe that'll keep him at ND.

Yes, but only up to $5,000 I believe ( I cant remember the exact number, havent done my taxes yet this year!). When I had 2 kids in daycare at the same time, it was easily $15,000+ a year in cost like FLdomer said at a reputable daycare. You can't just write everything off, ya know Kramer...

Hate to see him go but he is doing and admirable thing. Can't knock him at all for that. All that said I am becoming an advocate of over signing with each passing spring. See empty roster spots is what hurts the most. Best of luck to you Mr. Neal! You showed each week that you were a great team mate and I'm sure this was a very difficult decision for you.

I agree completely. You could always tell he was fired up on the sidelines and in the practice videos, so either he was the greatest actor of all time, or he just decided he needed to man up and do what he thought was best for his family.

That could work.... along with a monthly stipend. They are semi-pro athletes anyway.

OT:Did anyone else ever get stuck in the bowling alley "day cares" when you were younger?
So your parents who rolled in the league could roll and drink?
