Talking about chances Barkley becomes a star in the NFL:

"USC quarterbacks are like Notre Dame recruits, always overrated to some degree." He's entitled to that opinion since he sort of has a point (this season notwithstanding), but still thought it was a cheap way to slip a jab in there.

Wilbon's a typical Northwestern grad, in that he has a massive inferiority complex when it comes to ND. He's a notorious hater, unworthy of serious consideration.

Who is Wilbon? He does have a bit of a point but it was cheap. Ofcourse he also takes a shot at SC quarterbacks which doesn't seem to bug me that much.

Wilbon is the worst. He's the epitome of the modern self-important TV journalists. I wish he wasn't the main national Chicago guy, it's almost like he undermines Chicago sports all the time.

Oh, and his insistence on calling Magic Johnson "Earvin," in some sad, pathetic attempt to look like they're best friends, is the absolute worst.

I loved him up until the Ty soapbox debacle, but still tolerated him. He lost all my respect when he became such a "huge" hockey fan during the 2010 NHL playoffs, acting like he was Superfan 27 and suffered through Dollar Bill's dementia like the rest of us did.

Don't tell the Vikings that ND players can't play in the NFL and that they are over rated.

F him...it doesnt change the fact that USC QB's have systematically failed in the NFL...I can only think of one QB from SC that was consensus good player, that being Warren Moon. Pat Haden had a little success, maybe Carson Palmer about 6 or 7 years ago for a season. but who else? Rob Johnson? laff..

I don't get the jab. Didn't we just play in the National Championship game? How are our recruits overrated?

Its a smarmy shot, and yes the northwestern roots play a big part but Wilbon himself has admitted he's worked to cultivate those roots over the years.

Its also somewhat stupid. Our recruits are not overrated or underrated because of ND, they are simply RATED. Most often they are rated before we recruit them making overrating them because of being ND recruits IMPOSSIBLE.

One can argue that our recruiting has been better then our results.. but by definition that cannot be because ND recruits are overrated but would have to be that we recruit too many players overrated by the services or we poorly develop players rated by the services.
The claim that ND recruits are overrated is simply a gratuitous shot , not an actual possibility.

I agree that Warren Moon is probably one of the best QB's to come out of California however he attended the University of Washington not USC. He did attend West Los Angeles college before going to U of W.

It doesn't make much sense based on just 2012, but if you look at the last couple decades, ND has definitely underachieved in relation to its average recruiting class ranking.

But it wasn't intended as serious analysis. Just a gratuitous shot at ND.

Hmm...we need to raise ratings. I know, I'll take a shot at Notre Dame!

If he hadn't included a comment about ND would anybody have read it?

Wilbon is as relevant as Willingham. (Three times the auto spell checker here corrected his name to Wilson. Fitting that a lost at sea volleyball has more recognition.)

It may have been true 15 or 20 years ago, when Tom Lemming was pretty much the only person paying attention to individual recruits, and a ND offer was some sort of seal of validation as an elite recruit. But it's kind of ridiculous these days - with four competing news outlets covering recruiting 24/7 and the general sense of southern dominance - to say that our recruits are systematically over-rated. We're not even in on most of the top kids most years.
Maybe our players have underperformed their rankings in recent years (pre-Kelly), but that, to me, falls more on player development and the breaks of the game. Perhaps the same could be said for USC quarterbacks in the NFL.

Careful about stones and glass houses there. They've had a lot more QBs start a lot more NFL games in the last decade or two than we have. Maybe they're not getting to Super Bowls, but if that's the bar, most big-time programs are "systematically failing" and Miami of Ohio, Northern Iowa and Delaware are QB U.

I never realized what a douchnozzle Wilbon was until recently. I guess he never did anything to earn my attention.

Maybe over rated was a really bad term to use, and yes....it was a swipe at ND, however, I can understand the correlation to his point. ND has woefully underachieved in terms of where we are supposed to be in the college football world the way USC QB's underperform in the NFL. That all being said, I think of Wilbon like Cowherd......they are ratings driven professionals, and almost everything they discuss should be taken with some amount of salt.
