Hope we have half a class by the time I get out of bed tomorrow (working from home = quality shuteye).

WILLIAM MAHONE
High School: Austintown Fitch — Youngstown, Ohio
Measureables: Five-foot-eleven, 210-pounds
Other major offers: Penn State, Tennessee, Pitt, Iowa, Michigan State, West Virginia
Fun Fact: Chuck Martin told him his jumper looks like Ray Allen’s. Be the judge yourself.
On choosing Notre Dame: “They graduate I think 98, maybe it was 99 percent of their players,” Mahone told Irish Illustrated. “After talking with the academic advisors and everything, I felt I could definitely succeed there and there would be no problem getting all the help I need, but I’ll definitely be buckling down and getting my studies done.”
What he’ll bring to the offense: He’s not as physically imposing as Jonas Gray was coming out of high school, but Mahone fits the mold close enough, and shows good power and vision. If Russell has the opportunity to play out on the edge of the offense, Mahone looks like a great fit in the backfield, making one cut and getting up field, which he did incredibly well in high school.

"I can't wait till he gets in William's face," Celia Mahone said. "I said, 'What are you going to do?' He said, 'Nothing.' I said, 'That's right.' "

But I thought that Kelly's anger was going to kill our recruiting?

Seems like a real good kid.

I hope he gets that #2. That's a nice big bruising number haha

I saw that driving home from work a week or two ago. Thought that was kinda cool, so I snapped a pic.

I love that his mom tells him that she's not going to miss him, reminds me of my family. Sounds like a cool lady

Sounds like BK likes him at the slot.

The younger backs have stood out during the first week of camp. Bryant is a five-star recruit from Delray Beach, Fla., and Mahone showed some nimbleness with his catch-and-run.

‘‘Probably more pleased with that group than any,’’ Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. ‘‘We’ve got guys who can help us win right now. Greg Bryant can help us win.

‘‘Will Mahone had a great offseason. He’s had a great camp. He’s playing a little bit more in the slot, getting the ball to him. He’s got very good ball skills. We didn’t even know how good his ball skills were until we started to put him in the slot a little bit more. He’s come on. He’s probably been one of those guys in the first few days that’s caught our attention.’’

It has added up to one of the more intriguing position battles in camp.

Mahone looked good in the football practice update video from August 9th where he caught a pass on the left side and took it down the sideline, juking 2-3 players in the process.

I don't expect Mahone to move to the slot, glad to hear he has impressed so far but I think putting him in the slot is just giving him a look. If we had a Z WR depth chart I'd guess it is: Carlisle - Prosise - and then a freshman WR like Torri Hunter Jr. or Onwualu. Then u have guys like Folston & Mahone that can do it too but are primarily RBs a la Riddick and of course detached TEs too

You think Mahone could develop into our 3rd down back? He's a little bit thicker than the rest of our RBs. I can see him becoming our goal-line back or the guy we turn to in short-yardage situations or when we need an extra blocker.

Not sure what to expect from Mahone this year. On a related note I am curious about which RBs excel in pass blocking. That's an opportunity to get on the field for guys like Mahone, McDaniel, & especially Bryant.

I know Bryant is unbelievably strong and physical, but he's also one of our lightest RBs. He checked into camp lighter (204 lbs.) than Folston (207 lbs.). I'm not exactly sure what Cam & Will weigh, but I expect them to be at least somewhere in the 210s. While weight is obviously not everything, I feel that players like Cam & Will would have an edge over Bryant as pass blockers.

I think if Mahone does play, it will be mostly as a red zone. If he can run with power and be a receiving threat that is quite a weapon to have trying to get in the redzone. The three in play for that role I always thought would be McDaniel, Mahone, and Bryant as they seemed like (on paper) the RBs most suited to run between the tackles.

McDaniel (5'10'', 207), Mahone (5'11'', 214) and Bryant (5'10'', 204) are all pretty similar in physical profile, so that won't be much of a factor in deciding who gets the most redzone reps. Some combination of technique, vision and lower body strength probably will be though, and on those factors, I'd give it McDaniel (at least against Temple).

Redshirt freshman running back William Mahone has a high ankle sprain that Kelly said could sideline him for roughly two weeks.

those high ankle sprains can linger the entire season...hopefully they don't rush him back
