Tyler had one more year, he received a redshirt year for his back-injury his freshman year after 1 game played against I believe Nevada.

So, he left when he could have returned.

Wood finished his senior year. And he had one year of elgibility, but he stayed four.

No way he kept his speed up. That's an insane weight gain even if it's partially fat.

Bigs almost always balloon during the season let alone on the post-season break. You can bet that since Kelly said nothing about the Tuitt and Big Lou weight numbers that they were NOT viewed as "good" increases.

Riding the bike indeed.

I shudder to think what Nix would have scaled if he hadn't gone to Arizona with Neal for some desperation last minute conditioning --- 360+?

seems like Lou is doing ok though, is Tuitt rehabbing or just overweight do you think?

I have believed since the early part of last season that Big Lou and the staff have differing opinions about whether he can carry the "extra" weight. When Kelly first arrived, Kelly was correct. He said that Big Lou couldn't make the necessary "work rate" [which is Kelly's code for number of snaps in a row, and number of snaps in game competition, at top power/effort function]. Kelly was seeing this in practice reps.

As Lou got with Longo's program, he both dropped the weight [some anyway] and Kelly saw his "work rate" rise. Still Kelly was skeptical but as that season went on he found that Lou could hang in there at high effort level beyond what he suspected. Last year seemed to max this dichotomy out: Lou gaining weight, but still functioning at high octane level. So the staff "looked the other way", and Kelly made jokes about Lou's "mystery weight" in press conferences just as Lou was attracting national attention as NFL ready Nose Tackle. [and Manti calling him MVP].

My guess is that Lou was poorly conditioned when he arrived and in his redshirt year, but Longo Beach changed that. That remains changed and the re-gained weight isn't quite the same weight, but also Lou is cardiovascularly more The Beast now. The bottom line is that Big Lou is a physical freak, who defeats Kelly's statistical tables, and so the staff will just shake their heads and let him play at 350.

Tuitt, beast that HE is, may not be quite the same situation, and really need to keep the weight down. Tuitt is Power & Speed. Big Lou is Power & Quickness. Weight carriage may play differently.

I saw him in the dining hall during his redshirt year. He looked like a 340lb woman who was 9 months pregnant with twins. He belonged in BobD's thread "Hey Fat@ss!"

Excellent analysis though.

Stephon had a procedure to correct a sports hernia. I am sure he will be taking it easy this spring.

Someone mentioned a couple of times in a couple of threads how Tuitt and Day didn't look so sharp at the end of the season, Day with a hyper extended knee, and Tuitt with a hernia! NO SHIIT ~ TALK ABOUT PLAYING THROUGH PAIN! Kelly confirmed that it cost him some leg flexion, (flexibility) and lateral movement! No kidding. Just think, another case where as Kelly stated, we were pinned with irreplaceable injuries. Now look how deep we look at corner, safety, on both lines, and at running back!

Per Eric Hansen

Junior-to-be defensive end Stephon Tuitt spent most of Wednesday's first practice pedaling on a stationary bike and isn't expected to be full go until perhaps the last couple of weeks of spring practice.

Kelly said that the 6-foot-7, 322-pounder underwent surgery a couple of weeks ago for a sports hernia, an affliction that Tuitt played through for the second half of last season.

Tuitt was Notre Dame's leader in sacks (12), tackles for loss (13) and forced fumbles (3) and earned mention on several All-America teams in 2012.

"He's already moving really well," Kelly said. "He already feels so much better. He had some restriction in that groin/hip flexor area, so we said, 'You know what, let's get it done. Let's not wait on it.' It's something we may have managed, but we want to get him 100 percent."

Him missing the first few weeks of spring ball may be a good thing. He's had enough reps at this point that spring practice will be about shaking off the rust. However, this means more people behind him get more reps.

The only concern I have is his conditioning...
