I don't get why it's surprising that UCLA is favored going into NSD to some, GB and others are just repeating what has been known for a while.

What? Many recruiting analysts picked ND or Bama heading into this past weekend. The Bama guy predicted ND today with Bama #2. There has never, ever been a consensus on a favorite in the EV race until apparently this evening.

Either 2 or 3 out of the 8 Rivals guys pick UCLA every time they update their predictions. I wouldn't be suprised if he picked ND or Bama but most analysts have been predicting UCLA.

Yes everyone new UCLA was the favorite heading after his USC decommitment. His coach has connections to UCLA and a lot of family pressure IMO to go to UCLA and stay close to home.

UCLA has been looked at as the favorite since he decommitted from USC.

ND and Bama got into the race too late.

In the latest Rivals prediction I saw (last week I think right before the weekend) it was a dead split 4 votes UCLA and 4 votes Notre Dame. My point is that you're correct... it's not surprising UCLA has become the favorite. But there certainly hasn't been a consensus of people that has been trumpeting UCLA for long time. At best, there was maybe a plurality.

Hell, last week USC people were still convinced they were getting him LOL

This is a really good class, but they still didn't finish well for the second straight year.

If I told you that they would only get Smythe after Redfield and Folston committed a month ago most would have said that would be a disappointing finish.

I mean obviously... people said that from the very beginning. That UCLA was the reason why he decommitted from USC in the first place and had the most established relationship.

What I was taking exception to was the revisionist "everyone has been saying UCLA for some time" thing... because that's simply not true. "Everyone" was not saying that. And if you look back at what has been posted by national recruiting analysts over the past couple weeks/predictions that becomes very clear.

Step back from the ledge. I haven't felt good about ND landing EV for a while, and was starting to get pretty bummed about the "disappointing finish."

Then I went back and looked at the profiles of Jaylon Smith, Grey Bryant, Tarean Folston, Isaac Rochell, Will Fuller, Corey Robinson, Torii Hunter Jr, Hunter Bivin, John Montelus, Mike Heuerman, Michael Deeb and so on.... and I felt better. EV was a luxury that came up late.

This class is stellar. It didn't need "the big finish" because the class is already full of stars. And no one has backed out, which is tremendous.

Now stay away Houston!

EDIT: Oh, and my main point: EV might still shock everyone and have a Manti dream the night before his decision. Keep the faith, but ultimately be happy with the class!

If they don't get EV, this class has good talent, but not enough in the positions that really matter. That's the problem. Jaylon and Bryant are great talents, but you don't win a title with them anymore -- you win it upfront.

If you don't think ND lost that BCS title game in the trenches, you watched a different game.

EV is not a luxury. Getting him would be just as important as getting Jaylon. Impact DL like that are hard to find and are the difference between a good defense and a great one.

Don't get me wrong, he would be a huge piece, but with the way his recruitment unfolded and the way things have gone lately, EV showed up with major interest relatively "late," which IMO ultimately makes him a luxury (as in, I didn't expect ND to even have a chance to get back in the race).

I know games are won with big-time talent in the trenches, I'm no dummy. It's just my opinion that EV is not making or breaking the class.

Of course, I would very much like to see him at ND.

Going by what I've observed and gathered, Vanderdoes is pretty much a ND lock. I just don't see him going anywhere else. Alabama has 3 DT's already on board, so it wouldn't be ideal for EV to go across the country just to get stuck in a clogged rotation at NT. In addition, Alabama is in the running for other recruits, so there isn't room. UCLA is on the outside looking in, and with recent events, they have Fitts and Hollins signing on. I just don't seem him going anywhere else.

I am putting on noise canceling headphones with regards to EV until Wednesday night. Going to be a ton of conflicting 'reports' and speculation - not going to waste my time on it.

I keep saying the same thing to my self Ironman. but I keep getting dragged back in like a bug to the light. I want somebody to convince me that we are solid with EV...only two more days to wait. BTW...isn't speculation what we do here? LOL

Serious question, are you Irishtrinity's brother?

He'd still be 400 miles from home so it's not as if LA is his hometown. Just saying.

From my subscriptions to various sites, it sounds like ND has at least a 40% to land him, perhaps 50%.
