GAH! Nice post. I missed this. This explains why they're able to use workaround for sports like lacrosse but not for football/basketball. Thanks. Would have saved me a speculative post if I read it first.

Lol, well the post is truly fascinating nonetheless. I had no idea that Syracuse was THE destination for Native American lacrosse players. That is totally an NPR or NY Times human interest piece waiting to happen.

Interestingly, there is is a very narrow exception to the rule NOLA copied above, but to take advantage of it the player would have to win an academic scholarship based on his academic performance after at least his first year of college, and the award would have to be on the same terms as apply to any student in the general population. It would be a blatant NCAA violation to offer that kind of scholarship based on the needs of the football program. The way I read it, it's not possible to intentionally take advantage of the exception; it would just be a nice bonus if you happened to have a Myron Rolle-like player who somehow won a scholarship based on his collegiate academic performance.

15.5.1.2.1 Exception—Receipt of Institutional Academic Aid Only. In football or basketball, a
student-athlete who was recruited (see Bylaw 15.02.8) by the awarding institution and whose only source of institutional financial aid is academic aid based solely on the recipient’s academic record at the certifying institution, awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, may compete without counting in the institution’s financial aid team
limits, provided he or she has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) at the
certifying institution.

Both the FSU and USC boards are now saying it is a FSU/USC battle for Thomas. Momma obviously wants him to stay closer to home and if FSU can get his teammate 4 :s: OT Denver Kirkland then he will almost assuredly land with the Noles.

I bet the Miami board is in meltdown mode. For those that didn't see, Miami pulled Kirkland's scholarship offer last night and it is going to cost them Thomas now.

Do you know why they pulled Kirkland's scholly? That situation seemed bizarre to me, but admittedly I don't know much.

I have heard that they either a) ran out of schollys or b) were pissed that he wouldn't announce before NSD that he was going to pick Miami. Neither one of those really makes much sense though.

Miami yanks scholarship from Denver Kirklan; FSU, USF, Arkansas, Ole Miss stand to gain - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

The scholarship slight certainly didn't sit well with Booker T. assistant coach Tim 'Ice' Harris, nor his father, head coach Tim 'Ice' Harris Sr.

Junior was on his Twitter account afterward:

Tim Harris JR. @IceHarris:

I'll just let it be known that Denver Kirkland had NO academic issue. So, can that rumor just go away?

Tim Harris JR. @IceHarris:

SMH [Shaking My Head] This recruiting stuff is a mess. I just hope all these kids land in the place that's best for their futures.

Robinson committed to Bama... so much for their insider BS of him being a USC lock

Yea that guy changed his tune when the news broke about the Saban in home going so well the other day. He always refers to his source as "the source" and "the source" said Robinson wanted to be a Trojan but his mom wouldn't let him go that far away.

Basically the same excuse they will use when Thomas commits to FSU.

personally....i don't think robinson committing to bama makes our chances any better. bama is going to try to get as many elite DL as possible as they have the past 5 years.

only way it could help us is if eddie doesn't want to go to crowded house, but i don't think that's the case.

I wrote this on ISD a few hours ago, but it pertains here as well:
Michael Hutchings, USC commit and friend of EV's, said that EV would not go to USC if Robinson did. Now, he might have been mistaken, but he did say or tweet that (can't remember which one, but it was definitely him, 1000% sure). Soooooooo, IF that were true, it MIGHT have an effect on EV come NSD...

Interesting. If true, could have one of the following two effects:

1) Bama is now out for same reason USC would have been out

2) USC is back in

Best case scenario - Bama is out and USC is STILL out (my gut - I have them running 3rd at best in this race).

AWESOME ... Hope that helps us with EV (assuming its true that its a ND/SC battle for him)

Dammit I meant ND/Bama battle, which is what BGI was saying it is earlier this week ... Hope that's true ... If so, the Robinson news can't hurt and may help. But I'm not ruling anybody out just yet.
