Not sure if he'll be starting next year but he will be playing and playing on defense not just special teams. If he doesn't start next year he will start in year 2, that I say with a lot of confidence.
IMO he will have every oppurnity and honestly I can see him starting at some point next year.

I don't think there is anybody better, I just don't think that the staff will start him day 1. Thats why i said not sure. I have a lot of confidence that he'll play and play well. I have a little confidence that he'll be starting. It seems the trend is that they let these freshman play a little get used to the speed and then they start their sophmore years. With KR being the one off situation. We've agreed on this before, he is the best Safety prospect of the rivals generation for ND just not as confident he'll be starting next year.
Who's better and has more upside in our secondary? With Motta leaving Max has every oppurnity to start his balls skills are amaZing. I know people like coaching up with 3 stars and Kelly has shown he can do that. But i can't wait till Kelly and Cooks can coach up a 5* going to be special to watch.

Think Max is our best prospect get at safety in a long time, but I am really interested to see how Collinsworth comes back from his injury, what Prosise has to offer, if Hardy can make a move, and if Farley can continue to develop.
Shumate is interesting because I don't know where he fits best, maybe a Slaughter type Star role?
We have a lot of options at safety, so it would surprise me if Redfield passed them all his first year, but he certainly does have the athletic potential to surpass them all. Will be fun to watch the safety battles going forward.
My bad, did not know posting something informative was bad.

IIRC, the "Star" LB position was simply a stop-gap measure because we didn't have a functional DOLB at the time. I had always taken it for granted that Shumate would move back to SS at some point, but after Coach Elliot's recent interview, maybe he stays at CB.
I am very interested in this, do you know the link perchance?
“He’s very, very athletic. He has corner feet and burst and speed and athleticism. He may be a safety still in his career. He may be a corner. But we think he can definitely be a nickel-type of player and on special teams.”

I think it was that initially, but the success Slaughter had their against certain teams leads me to think we can utilize that position on a need basis going forward. Shumate has all the attributes, IMO, that it takes to succeed there, and pretty much played that exact position in HS.
That's true. Several analysts noted during his recruitment that he played in the box 90% during his career at Don Bosco.
Do you recall how many games Slaughter played at the "Star"? I thought it was only against the academies, and it worked well because: (1) Slaughter's a bad as$; and (2) the academies are undersized, so they couldn't take advantage of him in the running game like more talented teams could.
I just don't think we can get away with a full-time Nickel package against most of the teams on our schedule: Michigan, Michigan State, USC, Pitt and Stanford would all run right at him.
