Not sure if he'll be starting next year but he will be playing and playing on defense not just special teams. If he doesn't start next year he will start in year 2, that I say with a lot of confidence.

IMO he will have every oppurnity and honestly I can see him starting at some point next year.

There was a funny argument about this earlier in the year. I believe it was in Collinsworth's thread.

I am mentally lol'ing about that still.

For the record, I totally agree with you GB.

Who's better and has more upside in our secondary? With Motta leaving Max has every oppurnity to start his balls skills are amaZing. I know people like coaching up with 3 stars and Kelly has shown he can do that. But i can't wait till Kelly and Cooks can coach up a 5* going to be special to watch.

I don't think there is anybody better, I just don't think that the staff will start him day 1. Thats why i said not sure. I have a lot of confidence that he'll play and play well. I have a little confidence that he'll be starting. It seems the trend is that they let these freshman play a little get used to the speed and then they start their sophmore years. With KR being the one off situation. We've agreed on this before, he is the best Safety prospect of the rivals generation for ND just not as confident he'll be starting next year.

I understand maybe not day 1 but he will have the oppurnity and ability to be able too. Agree with your post.

I don't think anyone has the pure physical talents in our safety corp that Redfield has but not sure he will supplant Farley next year and unless the staff feels Shumate is best suited to the nickelback position (which I think would be a waste of his talents to only play nickel), I think Shumate will likely get a shot at Motta's position. Now in year 2, it is very possible Redfield could surpass Farley but I was pretty impressed with him this year. Redfield could possibly play the role Shumate did this year, though, and be the #2 behind either Farley or whoever replaces Motta. Baratti had a good year, too, but I don't think he has the talent Redfield has. It will be interesting because as we all know, some guys turn out to be busts at the college level while other guys end up being a diamond in the rough. I don't think Redfield will be a bust but we may have a couple of diamonds.

I have been assuming that they move Farley to FS and have a position battle for SS from the likes of Shumate, Collinsworth, etc. I think Redfield will immediately step in behind Farley and potentially by the end of the year splitting reps or at least spelling him.

I said it before, but I'd still like to see him in the role Shumate has played this past season at nickel. Give him some experience in limited situations, simplify the assignments a little and let him settle in by using his athletic ability with support next to him and behind him.

Redfield has the skill set to be starting sooner rather then later in our secondary. And with some of the guys that we could be serious contenders for in the 14 class in the secondary, it couldn't hurt for those guys to see this staff is willing to give young guys with the ability to make an impact to get on the field ASAP.

Think Max is our best prospect get at safety in a long time, but I am really interested to see how Collinsworth comes back from his injury, what Prosise has to offer, if Hardy can make a move, and if Farley can continue to develop.

Shumate is interesting because I don't know where he fits best, maybe a Slaughter type Star role?

We have a lot of options at safety, so it would surprise me if Redfield passed them all his first year, but he certainly does have the athletic potential to surpass them all. Will be fun to watch the safety battles going forward.

I agree Ironman. I think that he's physically ready to go. How quickly he picks up the defense and his reads will be the question. I want to understand a little better what kind of hitter and open field tackler he is. From what I've seen...I like.

IIRC, the "Star" LB position was simply a stop-gap measure because we didn't have a functional DOLB at the time. I had always taken it for granted that Shumate would move back to SS at some point, but after Coach Elliot's recent interview, maybe he stays at CB.

Russell at BCB, Shumate at SS, Redfield at FS, and Jackson at FCS seems to get all our best athletes in the secondary on the field at once. It'll be interesting to see if/ for how long Farley and Hardy can hold off Redfield at FS; same for Collinsworth with Shumate at SS.

I am very interested in this, do you know the link perchance?

Just a minor point football-wise, but maybe a symbol of something deeper that will also translate into eliteness on the field: Max was on ESPN's recruiting program here at suppertime. He had a calm smoothness about his conversation that spoke of an intellect overtly better than almost all the others who were being interviewed. "Notre Dame" just poured out of his image. I have an unimaginative belief that elite athleticism plus elite mentality plus elite character will explode into the highest of qualities even on the football field, as well as in life generally. I felt REALLY good, exceptionally good, about Max Redfield.

I think it was that initially, but the success Slaughter had their against certain teams leads me to think we can utilize that position on a need basis going forward. Shumate has all the attributes, IMO, that it takes to succeed there, and pretty much played that exact position in HS.

That's true. Several analysts noted during his recruitment that he played in the box 90% during his career at Don Bosco.

Do you recall how many games Slaughter played at the "Star"? I thought it was only against the academies, and it worked well because: (1) Slaughter's a bad as$; and (2) the academies are undersized, so they couldn't take advantage of him in the running game like more talented teams could.

I just don't think we can get away with a full-time Nickel package against most of the teams on our schedule: Michigan, Michigan State, USC, Pitt and Stanford would all run right at him.

I would have to go back and look at each game, but I seem to remember him doing it quite a bit in 2011.

I agree with you Slaughter was a BA and that's why we could move him there, and my point is I think Shumate is made of the same stuff. The kid is a baller, and I think he can be an asset on our D both defending the pass and stopping the run.

When we bring a safety down in situations, which I expect us to do a little more often as we become more comfortable with our CBs in coverage, I would love to see Shumate being the piece moved around to put himself in positions to make plays, a la Jefferson at Oklahoma (if he is put at safety, because there is always the chance they leave him at CB).

Hate to say it, but I feel more comfortable with a team picking him to run at rather than some of our other DBs in the back end. He just doesn't strike me as the type of kid that will miss many tackles.

I believe he did against FSU in the Champ Sports Bowl
