I have a recruiting philosophy that if you can get a top 5 player at a position where you only put 1 on the field (TE, RB, QB, etc.) you should take them every single time because there is no telling if you'll get the opportunity in the next cycle. For positions where you put 2+ guys on the field at a time (CB, S, WR, OL, etc.) I think you should take a top 10 guy every single time no questions asked. This is why I HATE that we passed on Dorian Johnson just because we were "full" at OL and I hated passing on Schutt, Joe Bolden, etc. last cycle.

I mean Joe Bolden was a ****ing consensus top 100 recruit... got a composite 96 rating and #2 ILB across the 4 services. Sure seems nice to have right now, doesn't it? SMH. You know who his scholarship basically ended up going to instead? Dan McCarthy/Chris Salvi. Because we didn't even have close to a full 85.

Hindsight is getting the best of you my man. None of us could write a book about last years finish it was so ridiculous. You are the man but check bolden's thread.

The weather in SB today is about as good as it gets in January. Light snow all day with little to no wind (which is so freaking huge and so abnormal). Obviously it's overcast, but the sun is coming through the clouds so it's not dark. The temperature is probably peaking around the low 30s.

If we don't land anyone, the weather can't be blamed.

+1 Lax. If Smythe wants in, bring him aboard. He's a good get for a host of reasons. Plus, as stated, why let him end up at a rival? I like guys who WANT to come to ND, and it's not like he has Rudy talent.

Id love to add Smythe to the class. But it will be BKs call on this if he decided to try to verbal. The only person that would have a spot is Vanderdoes. The staff has some different decisions to go over as far as the ending of this class as well as making sure they are in good shape for 2014.

Could this be an indication of the staff's confidence in landing a few of those we are still looking at in the next week?

I don't think it has any bearing on anything. They're just talking to a guy at a position of need in case they have open scholarships. At least that's my read of things.

A little OT, but what makes a great ILB as opposed to an OLB? I used to think ILBs were more stout, but probably a little slower (like Carlo or Deeb), but now people are saying that Isaac would make an ideal ILB. Isaac seems more like what I thought of us a DOG. He'll obviously bulk up, but he seems like he'll always be longer than thick.

If you want that kind of speed on the inside, shouldn't we shift Spond to ILB and use Councell and Smith at DOG. That way we aboid having three deep at DOG or CAT and potentially no clear cut starter to play with Grace?

Personally, I still see Randolph shifting inside.

Really complex answer as there are two ILB and OLB positions... but suffice to say, at ILB the most important things for both positions are instincts, range, lateral agility, power/ability to shed blocks, and tackling ability. At OLB, there are big differences between CAT/DOG... CAT needs to first and foremost be able to rush the passer and have the ability to play the run with coverage ability being mostly an added bonus to the primary responsibilities; DOG needs to be able to cover and play the run with pass rushing ability being mostly an added bonus.

A DOG candidate can most easily transition into an ILB type player... a guy who plays CAT typically has very few similar qualities to the guys who play ILB. Randolph certainly has the potential to be a fit at ILB (as does someone like Councell) but there are so many unknowns when it comes to instincts, play recognition, consistent tackling ability, etc. that's it's really hard to project if they will work out there.

You sure about that? DOG requres the most coverage, power side , second wr as well as tight end, and usually more field space, wide side. A DOG needs to do all three, run stop, rush, and cover, but usually more cover. Cat does all three, but usually more of the former two. Less to more coverage: CAT,ILB < DOG.

In our system, ILBs need to fly around and make tackles while the linemen occupy blockers. But you generally like more speed on the outside and toughness/agility on the inside, at every level of the defense. ILBs need to have the toughness and agility to make plays in tight spaces, which RBs are practiced at doing. That's why people are saying Isaac would make a great ILB, as opposed to OLB--he has the speed and length to play OLB too, it's true, but as a running back he has great quick feet as well, which are ideal for an ILB. Anzalone is the same type of athlete. Going back a few years, Courtney Watson is another example (high school RB).

I think high school jumbo RBs/ILBs are one athlete type that translates well to ILB in our system, and jumbo WRs/TEs/DEs are another athlete type that translates well to OLB. Safeties can go either way depending on their speed, strength, build, etc.

I do have to hope that this year we see some high school DEs become serviceable backup ILBs ... It would really help if Utupo and Rabasa could fill in. But not sure either can be more than a pass rusher.

So now that Smythe is on board who do you guys think is the most likely to join the Mob of the remaining targets? EV? Hollins? From what I gather in other threads Fitts would be more of a long shot and others like Isaac and Prevot seem less likely. Is that the common opinion?

EV and then either Hollins or Prevot. Think if Hollins doesn't commit within the week and Prevot doesn't go A&M then he is Irish. IMO.
