Tim Tebow better hope he can make a roster next year. His refusal to run wildcat plays really damaged his reputation. GMs and coaches don't want the distraction he brings; some of which is not his fault.

Yeah, I don't disagree with any of that. I just don't think you have to hire someone that has (1) no experience with coaching NFL players from a personality standpoint, (2) no familiarity with the players and other coaches in the league from an X's and O's/scheme/tendency standpoint, and (3) no network in the NFL that would help him put together a competent staff that could help overcome some of those issues in order to compete in the "new NFL."

If you look at the other guys who have had success coming from college to the NFL recently, they have all had NFL experience - something neither Kelly has. And considering that, as pointed out by another poster above, NFL coaches like Belichick and Shanahan have been able to implement some of the "college" concepts into their schemes, I think you're a lot better off taking a coach that know the NFL and having him learn some of the new football stuff than taking a coach who knows some of the new football stuff and having him learn the NFL. All of theses guys are smart football guys. They can adapt their scheme, so scheme wouldn't be my biggest criteria in selecting a coach if it was my call. A head coach has some responsibility for the system his team runs, but I value those things I mentioned above more than the system a coach will bring with him. The best coaches' systems are always evolving and changing to match personnel anyways.

My prediction is that this is going to be a disaster. We'll see what happens, I guess.

Can't disagree. His staff will help determine how this is going to go. Good points.

Yah because who would hire a college coach with no NFL ties or clout.

This is just goes to show you how close it was to it being our Kelly.

mmmHmmmm!

I can't speak for BK, but it looked like mutual interest, and I think its clear the Pheagles were fvcking SERIOUS.

Yeah but on the flip side, how many college guys with no NFL experience have failed over the last 20 years? Considering the lack on inspiring alternatives I think it's worth trying.

EDIT: and a major (but not very recent) counterpoint to the "college guys with no NFL experience fail" meme is Jimmy Johnson.

Jimmy gutted the Cowboys, and brought in young kids he could coach, and grew with them. It really didn't take Jimmy long to make those guys competitive...first year was ugly, but he got 'em going. Point is...does CK get the flexibility to gut the roster, and go 1-15, etc. So he can build HIS team...I just don't think that happens anymore.

There is also the fact that Jimmy was friends with the new owner, somewhat...and the fact that the Canes were a flashy team that WON the national title and were one point away from a repeat.

But knowing Jerry was the big thing because he wanted to remake the Cowboys too, so that aided Jimmy's ability to do what he did, I think.

So 3 years until he is fired? After posting 5-11, 7-9 & 3-13 seasons?

Yes you can reference this in 3 years.

Yes...correct. Jimmy had a long leash, and an owner that was his lifelong bud. Great points. I guess how ever he got there, he pretty much had the freedom to do things I don't think Chip Kelly gets.

How many recruits have enrolled since NSD? What a douche move to tell them that he turned it down just to change his mind. These are KIDS LIVES on the line. They are not pieces of meat and it matters. No respect for Chip on this.

You must have little to no respect for any other college football head coaches then to, right? They have all pulled this sh!t in some way shape or form.

I haven't really been spending much time in this thread, but I'm surprised people are so down on the Chip Kelly hire. Haven't NFL executives been quoted as saying that Chip Kelly runs the best practices they've ever seen? He's widely viewed as a master of implementing a scheme and ensuring that it is properly executed -- which is the most important quality for a head coach.

Brilliant "scheme" guys make great coordinators but not always great head coaches ... head coaches need to be able to put the pieces together and manage everybody else. By all accounts Chip Kelly is great at that.

Will his Oregon offense work in the NFL? Probably not without significant tweaking. He won't be able to recruit players who are just faster than everybody else like he does at Oregon. But he got the job because NFL execs think that he's the type of coach who will have success with whatever scheme he runs.

Source close to UO FB program tells me that Jerry Azzinaro, Greg Austin, Matthew Harper and Todd Lyght are going to Philly with Chip Kelly.

Philadelphia Eagles: Fox 29 reporter in Philadelphia Howard Eskin is reporting that Oregon defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro will join the Eagles' staff as defensive line coach. Eskin reports candidates for the defensive coordinator job in Kirby Smart and Todd Grantham.

sorry didn't know where else to put this:

Fort Lewis College (D-II - CO): John L. Smith will become the next head coach, effective March 1.

That is insane. Further validation that the Eagles really have no clue what the hell they're doing.

They've had an awful 2 years and most of us are happy to see Andy Reid leave, but way to paint them like Cleveland, Jacksonville, or Oakland.

Only the Colts, Pats, and Steelers won more games from 2000 to 2010.

They had a great run under Reid, though I agree Reid's tenure had run its course. Based on what they have done to their roster under Roseman and how Lurie conducted this coaching search (being seemingly obsessed with hiring a college coach, which I've stated many times I think is extremely stupid), and now paying this gimmick coach like he's Bill Belichick or Sean Payton, has led me to believe that either he has totally lost it or he never had it to begin with and Banner and Reid keep that thing afloat.

That's a little much....

You have been very coy in this hire, my man.

This is getting out of hand. Their are a multitude of proven head coaches that would have taken that job for less.

Your team hired a college coach that never won a championship for twice as much as they could have hired Lovie Smith for... if that doesn't make you mad, then you aren't being objective about the management of your favorite NFL team. This was one of the biggest jumble-*ucks of a coaching search as I have ever seen. That doesn't even include the fact that they fired Andy Reid to do it.

I would be so pissed if I were you...

I don't know how you feel as a Bears fan but I speak for most of the Vikings and Packers fans that I know but we were UPSET that the Bears fired Lovie Smith. I wanted the Bears to keep Lovie forever. If your opponents were upset to see you fire a HC...what does that tell you about that coach? I was worried that you guys would go out and hire a great coach and looks like you might have and that is upsetting.

Speak for yourself. Lovies been as good as it gets as far as a defensive coach. It was more Angelo's blatant disregard for offensive talent than Lovies coaching. I'm more than happy that he's gone.

Lovie's a good defensive mind and a middling HC. If my team hired him I'd be less than ecstatic to say the least. Playoffs 3 out of 9 years isn't cutting the mustard. His teams will never be horrible and never be great.
