I think he should take his time unless he starts getting bad vibes from the NFL people. To me, its only the bad organizations with the high draft picks that would shy away from him anyway, and he was not projected to go that high. He'll likely go in the middle of the first round and won't fall out of it.

So why talk? His reputation? IMO, 90% of the people condemning T'eo are basing it on the noone-is-that-dumb line of thinking. We all know that isn't true. They are going to think what they want and then move on when something else comes up. Those people are zombies and should not be entertained.

So the last 10% think there is evidence out there that doesn't add up and want explanations. I can understand their curiosity, but he doesn't owe them anything more than the explanation he and Jack have already offered (assuming, as I do based on charachter and evidence, that he is not a crazy narcisist). He could explain some of that, but it makes sense to take his time and wait until everything bubbles to the surface naturally. If people are truly interested in evidence, they can wait.

I have followed a bit of this thread and have a few organized thoughts:

This thread capitalizes on the drama of an internal conflict with the "bad or dark side" of each of us. We want to believe in the worst in others. So people will launch verbal spears, to make themselves feel better, that are just pure nastiness. The second wave of this pattern is all of us recognizing this in the media, and training all of our "self-righteous indignation toward them." From there, the ripple effect continues outward. There is very little good, other than certain recognitions that can be made from this whole episode.

It doesn't matter if you use the word(s) conflation, or gossip, or the" how now brown cow effect". Almost everything to be said about this is spiteful, mean, and venomous. We can see it from other non ND sports fans, from the media, and even on this site, in this thread. I mean some of the stupid a$$, illogical leaps of stupidity I have seen, I find amazing. I guess it is because this situation violates so much of what people value in their existence . . . So, the reason I will have a ton of respect, offer my friendship forever, and call JimmyMac one of the best men I have ever met is because he more than almost anybody, has not inserted his own dysfunctional needs into the story, has not engaged in conjecture, only responding in a truthful manner. And his life probably puts him more in the middle than almost any other poster I have seen here. Keep it up Jimmy! I want to buy you a beer for our birthdays! Jack and Manti owe you a six-pack (at least) each!

LDS: People talk about the difference between the ideal and the actual with a sexually repressed church like Roman Catholicism, buy highlighting the "Madonna-Whore Complex." I recognize this is more of that which I described at the beginning of this post. But, I have known a fairly strong LDS community near where I live, particularly among medical residents, and I can think of a couple who were anything but sexually repressed in their private lives. In fact, these guys had more of a separation between their casual affairs that there private lives that most I knew. One pointed to the fact that his grandfather had seven wives, and that was how it was supposed to be, anyhow. So, the whole point of this is that idealized stereotypes have nothing to do with real life, or an incident like this.

Earlier, I told a story about how I felt myself getting sucked into an obviously fraudulent story, and had to a minor degree some of the emotional baggage of a "relationship" to deal with afterward. The point was I spotted this right away. I was 50+. When I was Manti's age I was busting prostitutes at Lindbergh Field who were targeting basic training graduates headed home for leave, and rolling them for their basic pay, and travel expenses. For goodness sake, I have built a healthy skepticism, and realize I am still venerable, and people cannot understand how someone like this could be gotten too? It is all about future earnings.

I brought up the "Pigeon Drop" for a reason. People are avaricious greedy mutherfockers. The best way to set a mark is to tempt him into doing something he wouldn't otherwise do, then you got him hooked for life. Hooked for life means lots of money (statistically speaking) from Manti.

That is why I would try to get the FBI involved, a hint of fraud across the wire, and they could be there. And they are good. I have seen it in two cases. They need to get hold of the kid RT, and sit on him. Hard. Then you will get the story, one way or another.

One final thing: These are just people(everyone involved including Manti) are just humans, everyone has got their problems, give everyone a break.

I especially agree with your last sentence.

I live in Rural Utah 30 miles from Salt Lake City...obviously my experience w/ the LDS folks is QUITE different. I think you raise a point...I always treat "LDS" as a culture label more than a faith label...I equate the conservative throwback world I live in to "LDS". Maybe its just Utah Rural living...but I gotta tell you, I grew up in Rural PA...not the same.

As for Manti...he seems to be the guy we see...by all accounts he does not have different personas. He seems to operate on the same value system as the young men around me...suffice it to say I can easily project them into his shoes and see how a) we got here; b) more "worldly" people might think this unfathomable; c) how the press would be motivated to pile on him.

AS for JM...prolly nailed it...he's there...I believe.

However, cool thing for Manti is, while the press hacks, and holier than thou types bang away at him because he is a good guy in a bad moment...Manti will get the same paycheck. So to all of you butt hurt, bottom feeding morons, I extend my left hand with index finger pointed at your collective, my heartiest belly laugh, and a my right hand with an erect middle finger!...hold it for a moment...walk away done with your trivial a$$es.

Same said girl that Manti dated, I presume is the one that had her family buy his class ring. It's definatley more than just a subtle fling. I don't know the girl or Manti personally but I do know this info as a fact. So he was not into the fake girlfriend as much as what the media hyped it up to be. I wish he would have nipped that in the bud, however, I can see why a young man would not come out and say he's dating a girl online...only. I am ready for the dust to settle. Worst possible outcome is still not a very bad offense imo. A small mistake when you compare it to some of the other faults we have seen not only at ND but throughout the country. That is if he was actually involved, which I don't think so. I hope that the female from Saint Mary's does not have her name tossed through the mud either.

Manti needs to get in front of the cameras for who?

ND NYC, Brian31, fans that are embarassed by their coworkers, or SEC neighbors?

Te'o is dropping in the draft because of ThePiombino's opinion or mine or Killz or anyone else on the board or becasue of Kuyper, et al.

He had a BAD game in the NCG.

GMs and Owners don't care squat a phantom girlfriend. They want to know if his performance wast because of the "better SEC talent" or because he was emotionally distraught over a personal issue be it gullibility or complicity?

He played with intensity immediately following for 2 months after the "death" but did not have the same intensity and performance 4 weeks after the "resurrection".

He said, He said is BS to those GMs looking at multimillion dollar decisions. They don't care what Manti tells Oprah, Rome, or the Grand Inquistor. They do care what he has to say to them, their coaches, and they're pyschiatrist.

And quite frankly that's the only session Manti has to prepare for - the multimillion dollar interview before a sharper bunch of people than a group of fans and angry journalists who are angry because they were inept and are now looking to punish Te'o for their shortcomings.

Every night Hannity screams for Obama to come clean while Ed bellows for Boehner to stop stonewalling. WMD's, Clinton, Gingrich, Reagan, Nixon, LBJ, JFK, FDR, Wilson ... Lincoln. The media and the public wanted everything debated to their satisfaction and most of them focused on what they needed to do.

Catfishing pales next to WMD's, interns, affairs, ethics, Iran Contra, Watergate, Vietnam, Bay of Pigs, The Cold War, WW II, Court Packing, League of Nations, ... The Union and Slavery. But the principles in handling issues is similar.

Te'o has made a public statement. Unless someone presents a evidence of a criminal nature any credibility or complicity issue questions he is obligated to is to his future employer.

Getting into a he said, he said public fingerpointing with Tuiasosopo to please the agnary media and "fans" would only show his future employer's a further lack of judgement.

IMO:
Reason for the hype regarding Manti's relationship in the first place - the Media

Reason many different published accounts of the relationship are conflicting - the Media

Reason Manti would have avoided coming clean about the casual nature of the relationship / embellished his "love" for her - the Media

and Kudos to Deadspin for finding a way for the majority of sports fans to even know who they are.

I've been reserving judgement about this whole thing for awhile until I saw enough information. With what is out there, and supposedly true and backed up by sources, there seems absolutely no way he couldn't be in on this. For what gain? I don't know because I highly doubt the dead girlfriend angle really would have helped win him the Heisman even without Johnny Manziel having an amazing season.

I think it still would have come down to his play on the field and the whole Notre Dame feel good story. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I just don't see the Heisman trust really taking it in as a strong voting factor. Now, by that same token, I do think that if he loves attention as some are attributing, this is definitely right up that alley. The very facts that he new the guy who created the persona personally, and the sloppy way the timelines and dates don't add up to when things happened and were reacted to point out the whole thing is a sham. But more importantly, it points out he HAD to know and HAD to be in on it.

At first, I could give him the benefit of the doubt because some people are more socially shy and so they turn to the internet for love...and many people find it or think they find it. This isn't anything new. But, like I said before, the dates of when things happened in this story and when he's come forward about parts of it in his explanation to ND just don't add up. It's really sad too because he's such a good player this whole scenario just wasn't necessary. It makes him look like a complete dumbass as well as nowhere near the "all-american dream" he had going for him. Too bad.

Honestly, I'm over it already. Te'o was duped, found out, lied about it to cover embarrassment, it spiraled out of his control, and here we sit. I honestly don't care about the rest because its all semantics. I still want him on my team 100 out of 100 times. I thought that before the hoax and nothing leads me to change that. Every team has their demons and if this is ours then so be it. We still didn't cheat. We still didn't break any NCAA infractions. We didn't pay our players or do some sick cover up. There's personal embarrassment and that's about it.

USC is still on scholarship reduction.
Oregon will get hit soon.
Miami as wel.
tOSU has their problem and so does PSU.

All of them are still worse then ND.

Haters are gonna hate but their time will come. It always does.

10,000% correct. Couldnt agree more. I think he was duped, found out the truth, embarrassed, lied to cover up the truth. Move on. We'll still sign a great class, we'll still field a great team next season. This will have zero impact. Story over.

This is certainly great case for Teo to say nothing more on the subject. My motivation (desire) for him to stand up in front of the camera has nothing to do with the barrage of my co-workers but i get your point. The truth is I think the world of Teo and I hate to see all of the good that he has done in his four years get tarnished. I hate when bad things happen to go (great) people. I think he's been victimized and I want him to stand up for himself. I don't want countless numbers of people believing he is a bad person. I can handle the SEC, OSU, and other honks that I run with. i want the best for this man as he has brightened up my Saturdays (soon to be Sundays) and is a true inspiration.

There's pretty much no scenario where Manti never embellished anything.

The "innocent" scenario is that he exaggerated a fair amount when talking about things, and then was in disbelief when he talked to "Lennay" more than a month after her death, which is why he kept talking about her to Fowler.

I have a bone to pick with Wojciechowski. Putting Te'o in the same sentence as Lance Armstrong is a weak attempt to put a new spin on a story they were not the first to break. It's just ridiculous. Yet another reason I hate him.

Never heard that before. Cite? You can't just call up a doctor or their staff and ask personal information about a patient. They wouldn't even be allowed to say if they treated anyone by that name, knew of her, if she passed, or if she ever stepped foot in the hospital/medical office

If anything, Wojo protected him. He noticed the facts didn't add up months ago and chose not to pursue it further.

Just because some are false does not mean all are.

I know a few players. I know how weird/different they acted when Te'o's name was brought up. Look at some of the player's tweets.

There's a good possibility it's true.

I just want to circle back to this....

Your approach is that because there's a "chance" that it's correct that I should put value in it. My approach is because a very large chunk of anonymous source information is misleading or fabricated I don't put any value in it and wait for a report that someone attaches their name to.

I'll stick with my approach.

if all Manti cared about was money and his future employers your right he doesnt have to say anything. not now not in te future

i read manti a different way. i think the kid could care less about money in his life. he is a spritiul being and honor and integrity and truth hold way more value than what a contract would get him. his reputation and integrity are being slammed right now. he needs tofight ot get his "good name" back, restore his honor as best he can.

you do realize that as of today people DO BELIVE HE WAS PART OF THIS. at a minimum he needs to do al he can to establish, persuade as many ppl as he can that he was 100% victim and had zero involvement other than being duped.

in short, jack set the table for manti to have final word on all this (damn near promised a manti statemet was coming within days). he needs to do this not for me or the posters you cite--no he needs to do this for himself and his future mental/psychological well being IMO. unless i have rea dhim wrong all these years and he really only does care about the money. if he does than your right, then "to hell with everyone, i'll just work on getting drafted as high as possible and deal with teams that i interview with."

Please tell me what information you have seen that suggests he was in on it. Did he embellish the relationship? Quite possibly. Did he continue to talk about it after he supposedly found out? It obviously appears that way. I have not, however, seen any evidence that supports that he was "in on it."

Why does everything have to be black or white? Can't it be that he was duped and then lied about the extent of the relationship because the media was gushing about it? Who here has not exaggerated a story they told to their friends?

Excellent point by Forde regarding the timeline around the supposed Dec 6th phone call:
While in Orlando for the ESPN awards show in early December, Te’o was contacted by someone purporting to be his dead girlfriend. According to sources, it took an unnerved Te’o several more conversations over the course of 10 days to become convinced that he was the victim of a hoax. He hadn’t told his parents yet, much less anyone at the school.

The disclosure to those people began Christmas Eve and extended through Dec. 27. By then, Te’o was finished with media obligations until the team arrived in South Florida for the BCS championship game. Notre Dame’s private investigation was underway, and would be until Jan. 4.

If you want to believe Te’o and Notre Dame should have come forward there, in that setting, and blown the whistle on the charade, be my guest. What school in America would volunteer that shocking, salacious, downright weird story to a national media horde in the days before playing for the national title?

Manti Te'o needs to address public's questions about girlfriend hoax - Yahoo! Sports

A lot of media is making a big deal about him finding out on the 6th and then mentioning her on the 8th. Well if you thought someone was dead and then someone called you saying they were still alive would you think it was some kind of prank or immediately believe them and start blowing a horn?

Great point. That's a compromise Manti and his family might not want to make but it's the smart move. Manti moves on, his good name restored, to make millions in the NFL, and Tuiasosopo gets his 15 minutes, an interview with Nev Schulman, whatever he wanted.

It would be really tough for me to agree to that if I were Manti, because I would really want to come after Tuiasosopo with everything I've got, but I'd like to think that I'd recognize what the smart move is.

Been saying the same thing. I honestly think the media is so upset over this mess because they fell for it too. They're just blaming it on Manti and going after him. They put him and this story in the spotlight. They built it up. With each victory came a new interview or new tv narrative reminding the viewers of what happened. You think Manti asked for all of that attention? I doubt it. They put this whole thing on a pedestal only to tear it to shreds now that it's a hoax. If it's juicy and brings in ratings, they're all about it. With or without all of the facts.

I've been losing interest in the story for the past few days. I don't know if it's the complete lack of initative by the press or that I'm just tired of the same derogatory B.S. that is always flung towards Manti and ND. If the press were so inclined, there's a lot of evidence that's been posted here that could make the whole situation clearer for them. All they need to do is dig for it. But, they're (the majority of them) lazy and don't want to dig for the truth. All they care about is selling papers and getting hits for their sites. Anything that Manti says will be considered a lie by some people. I'm not going to post anything else in this thread. Nobody cares about the truth. Gone are the days of true investigative journalism. I sincerely hope Manti has learned that there are people in the world who would much rather see him suffer than wish him the best.

God bless Notre Dame and God bless Manti Te'o.

To "circle back" to our conversation earlier simply to put me down or belittle me is dumb and a way for you to flex your muscles on the forum. Congrats, you're approach is better than mine.

I'm sorry.

waiting for a "next move" by RT? what "move" do you anticipate?

all that we really have in this life is our good name. i strongly feel that is all Manti in his soul truly cares about.

he needs to be working to restore it for his own sake, and not worry/rely on some legal manuevering. "lawyering up" is not required to solve his biggest immediate problem.

again-maybe im reading him wrong here, but i dont think so.

Excellent point by Forde regarding the timeline around the supposed Dec 6th phone call:

A lot of media is making a big deal about him finding out on the 6th and then mentioning her on the 8th. Well if you thought someone was dead and then someone called you saying they were still alive would you think it was some kind of prank or immediately believe them and start blowing a horn?

Manti Te'o needs to address public's questions about girlfriend hoax - Yahoo! Sports

Exactly. This is the thing that seems to have escaped everyone at ESPN. It is really pissing me off how they report that Manti learned of the hoax on December 6. NO ONE has said that. He received a phone call from his dead girlfriend on December 6, and Jack Swarbrick said that the hoaxers sought to "continue the hoax." Your first thought when you receive a phone call from your dead g/f probably isn't, "Oh, she must never have existed." It's probably, "someone who sounds like her must have got hold of her phone and is now trying to prank me." Or whatever it is, he wouldn't have fully understood the dimensions of the hoax right away. Obviously it would have taken Manti a little while to realize what was going on at that point. Don't know how more people don't seem to get that.

Here's a pro-tip to keep in mind when making an argument: just because one set of facts is consistent with one set of inferences and conclusions does not "absolutely" preclude its consistency with another set of inferences and conclusions contradictory with the first set. Mere consistency is not in itself absolute proof and anyone parading it as such thinks the reader of his argument dim or should be himself thought of by the reader as dim. Out of respect for yourself and for your readers, please be mindful of this before making assertions one way or the other.
