He released a statement. It is all over ESPN. He was clearly the victim. Is shows how truly great of a person he is if he felt this strong about someone he never met.

How in the world did the media not pick up on the fact that there is no person named Lennay Kekua that died in California?

Ok this is bad. It will probably get worse before it gets better but with less than a month until signing day, how does affect our recruiting class?

Really wild his grandma did pass. I really don't feel he even pressed the fact about her more the press asked.

Although help me piece this together... How real was Lennay? Did she have a fake address? Fake parents? A fake roomate at Stanford? Did she have a hometown? How deep was this lie?

One would have to think that Manti couldn't have become involved in such a serious relationship with someone, someone who his dad called a potential daughter-in-law, without knowing intimate details about her life. When he heard she died, who told him? A fake doctor? Her fake mother? Did he call and offer condolences to any fake relatives? To whom did he send those white roses? If he had disobeyed her alleged wish for him to play if she'd died, where would he have gone for the funeral? Did he never think to visit her grave or contact her parents?

I want to believe Manti, I really do. Before this afternoon I esteemed him as my favorite athlete, at any level, in any sport, of all time. His statement sounds sincere, but there are still so, so many holes that need to be filled in for me to fully believe him.

"Her brother".

I can just imagine Pete Carroll sitting behind a computer in a wig, saying "Should've come to SC, Manti, and this all could've been avoided".....while turning off the monitor and walking out of the dark room.

Scene.

Is it possible that Manti got caught up in the hype of the situation and exaggerated their relationship?

It could have been a cruel joke that someone played on him to begin with. Then she supposedly passes away and the media goes crazy over the story of a senoir mlb at undefeated notre dame playing inspired due to the recent deaths of his girlfriend and grandma.

Manti feels that he can't come out and say that it was just a internet/long distance relationship/friendship after all of the coverage and begins to tell a little lie here and there.

This would explain conflicting reports of when they met, how long they were together, how often they talked, and how often they actually saw eachother.

Just a thought. Feel free to pick away at it
This seems to be the most likely reality of the situation. But it still wouldn't change the fact that Te'o lied multiple times.

Imagine coming home from work, turning on Sportscenter, and seeing "BREAKING NEWS: Manti Te'o's girlfriend did not exist." Is this real ****ing life?

I probabl missed this but the best thing about this whole story is the fact that Manti came forward back in December. Well b/f the story broke. Had it broke first, this would be much harder to explain. Time will tell.

Meeting her at the Stanford game and exchanging numbers is the primary thing throwing me off about this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this account of their meeting came from him directly. It would have been nearly impossible to stage that first meeting if he was in fact hoaxed. The talking on the phone is much more reasonable to fake.

Troubling, indeed. For Te'o to be blameless here, this had to have been an epic troll job; spanning years, and involving multiple parties, for no apparent gain to the conspirators. Why would they keep it up so long? What did they hope to gain from it?

Typical trolls get bored of such shenanigans in short order and move on. Still lots of questions that need answering.

According to Te'o, multiple times daily prior to her "death".

Apparently it was just fun for them. The Deadspin article says that "Lennay" had other online boyfriends. It wasn't just Teo. This was just what these sick people did.

No, it came from Teo's dad, Brian Teo, at least if you are referring to the SBT article. There's at least some plausible deniability there. According to Teo's statement he communicated with "Lennay" online and on the phone, but never met her. Brian obviously didn't know what he was talking about.

I think there may be 2 stories intertwining here. He probably did meet a girl at Stanford but didn't know her name idk just a guess.

The theory that makes Te'o look innocent would be he made it up because he was embarrassed that he had an online GF
