Golson got better every week. I bet that trend continues. He's going to be a great one when it's all said and done. If Kiel transfers, then that means we have a QB so good a top QB recruit couldn't unseat him. That sounds mighty fine to me.

Calling Gunner a soft-spoken kid is an understatement. After talking to him for awhile earlier this week, I think an accurate description of his skill-set mixed with demeanor could be that of "assassin" when he sees the field.

I think Golson will continue to grow and be an outstanding QB for ND but Kiel would be foolish to transfer. His time will come. It reminds me of Tom Brady's situation at Michigan. He had to deal with Brian Griese, Drew Henson and Scott Dreisbach throughout his career there. All 4 QBs threw for nearly 3000 yards in their careers while they were there from 1995 - 2000. Brady could have transferred but didn't.

Tom Brady wasn't the #1 QB recruit in the country. I agree with most of what has been said, with regards to him staying, but kids these days are a bit different from 10-15 years ago.

Entitlement reigns nowadays, although there are exceptions.

Yeah, but whatever happened to Brady? He's not even selling insurance like those other guys right now......

If Gunner comes in and pressures EG for the starting spot next season, I would say we are in pretty good shape at the QB position. I don't think position battles show a teams weakness at all as some critics of ND have done the last few off seasons. While Everett's stats were not glamorous by any means, look at the first half stats compared to the second half. The only reason Gunner would transfer right now would be if he was afraid of some competition, which I have not seen or heard anything that eludes to that. I look forward to the QB battle once again this spring and fall.

Agree. As well I also see Kelly finding ways to get GK some snaps through "packages", and I expect the offense to be a bit more efficient, and put some people away sooner giving way to some more minutes for GK, or whomever is #2. This year, even when we jumped on folks, EG needed the minutes, so #2 only got time when EG got clobbered or STB.

Fun spring coming...

If you go back into Kelly's history, one year he played 7, yes 7, qb's in a single season. Injurys, replacements, etc. Can't exactly remember where or when. I will try to find that.

Somewhere Luke Massa is chomping at the bit.

everytime I start reading a thread and I'm deep in contemplation, and instinctively rolling the mouse wheel...I slam into one of these...Then I have to stop and laugh...

Golson had a good season for a first time starter. He obviously improved over the course of the season. Nothing is set in stone though, it's on Gunner if he wants the starting job. Bring it in the spring. Best man wins.

Yep, he absolutely had a good season for a RS frosh. The future is bright when one considers the development that would occur through his commitment and hard work. That said, healthy competition provides incentive that leads to enhanced commitment and hard work for some, and that is never a bad thing. I love Golson's potential, welcome a QB battle, and hope it's close because that means we would indeed have two real good ones with great potential.

IF Gunner is as good a pocket passer and quick deliverer and accurate long-baller as everyone would hope;and

IF Everett steps up his game to more Tyrod Taylor-type scrambling and occasional running efficiency, which Kelly is relaxed about; then

I could easily see the two of them getting into a psychologically comfortable space with roles like: Everett is the starter and Kelly sees how he rolls, but when it's obvious that the other team is really vulnerable quickly over the middle and to the bomb, in comes Gunner with his height and speed decisions and bomber precision.

That scenario means nothing if it turns out that Gunner can't do these things, which are unproven elements at this time.

We seem to spend a lot of time talking about what if's and commonsense football then creating drama.

Quarterbacks competing for the starting position, geez there's something new. I bet it'll be shocking to the players as they've never done that before and they'll all want to transfer.

What if EG goes down with a bad injury? Gunner might be next man in. But like Bob said we can't control what ifs.

Kelly will give Gunner a chance to prove himself in the spring. He'll put the guy on the field that gives us the best chance to move the ball. I wish that we could actually watch this battle play out as I still have his HS film as my point of reference.

I hate a 2 quarterback system it really doesn't work

I'm not in favor of it, but I don't get why people say it doesn't work. When two QBs are truly complimentary of each other- each with a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, I think it's much better than trying to hit a square peg into a round hole with one of those QBs.

I think Kelly has indicated in the past that he prefers a single QB system, but that he went with two this year to both win and develop Golson at the same time. I have a feeling he'll give reps to Gunner if he has a good spring, but in all reality the full time position seems to be Golson's to lose.

That being said, Kelly loves competition so if Golson stumbles in the spring and Gunner comes out firing, why wouldn't he go to him?

It doesn't really matter - either way we come out with a good QB. Competition breeds success.

not to highjack gunner's thread, but i'd love for everett to develop enough over the spring and summer (with the help of an elite QB like Gunner pushing him) that BK trust s him to the effect to let him run the entire offense

i think he definitely showed the progress throwing the ball and understanding the passing game where he will be able to run the whole show next year

So much for the 'lets not speculate on transfers' board rule.

This will only really matter if Golson gets hurt in 2 years.
