Have to love Desmond Howard...Notre Dame does not have a great defense, they have a good defense...teams have just dropped touchdown passes on them.

Well Michigan didn't even get the opportunity to catch the ball in the end zone. Suck it Desmond

Important point. It is HUGE that Ty Montgomery won't play in this one. We've been susceptible to fast, dynamic receivers who can get behind the defense. If Philip Dorsett could catch the Miami game would have been way different. We could not cover Owusu in the Stanford game last year.

Montgomery would have been able to stretch our defense and create space underneath the safeties for Stanford's big TEs to work. Without Montgomery, it's a whole new ballgame; I'll feel much better about our ability to cover those TEs.

Two passes do not mean we are susceptible.

Perhaps. That was the first serie though. Miami did not stop trying to connect down field, we adjusted. Once we did, there was nothing available for Morris.

you're crazy. I'm expecting it. The only real threats on the schedule are Stanford, Oklahoma, and $C and all 3 look beatable. Take your fancy math and go play lacrosse.

Insulting IrishLax is one thing*, but when you disparage objective statistical analysis, you've gone too far.

*IrishLax draws a lot of water on this message board. You don't draw sh!t, Teomonsternd.

Fill me in on where I missed some

I think he means passes in general, not TD passes. Our opponents have had lots of drops.

I don't remember the Navy one, but MSU had a TD dropped in the south endzone, left side. Russel had really good coverage, but Maxwell threw a beautiful ball that the receiver should have caught...

I seem to remember three drops on deep balls by Dorsett alone, two on the first drive and another later in the game, but whether it's two passes or more or less is not the point. We haven't faced enough skilled QB/fast WR combos to know anything for certain about our ability to cover the deep ball against such a battery. The point is that Dorsett was able to get loose deep in the defensive backfield, and in what I've seen of Ty Montgomery he seemed to have that kind of ability; he was getting loose like that against Washington. Granted he dropped at least three balls in that game, but if he were to catch just one or two against us the secondary starts to play softer on him, giving more room to the TEs underneath. Am I wrong? (This is a league game, Smoky)

Actually Russell knocked that one away, didn't he? Or am I thinking of the wrong play? If it's the one I'm thinking of it was a great play by Russell.

It looked like he did, but I watched it a couple of times and think the guy just dropped it. I could be wrong. Still, it was a great play by Russell because he ACTUALLY TURNED AROUND and tried to make a play on the ball!!! (Imagine that?)

Maybe someone else has a replay of it?

I don't think Russell actually knocked it away but I think he got his hand in the receivers way/sight.

2 minute mark.

Hard to say if Russell influenced but I think receiver def. still could have made a play.

He had two drops on Miami's first drive, and Morris overthrew him on the next drive. Probably still catchable, but would have been very difficult.

I'd say Miami qualifies. After that first series, we adjusted and shut them down.

Dorsett dropped 3 easy balls (2 behind the safeties), and one off his finger tips for a total of 4 and I did only say a "lil" and I didn't put it in italics

Seriously. How good is the season going that we and the media only have 3-4 plays to knit pick after 5 games?

There have been a few dropped passes this year that helped us, no denying that. But, that's CFB. It's funny how quickly people will look at that as a reason for our success, but can't look at just a few blown plays last year that kept us from a BCS bowl. Just sayin.....

The first two were on the same drive....

I get what you're saying though, the young secondary has made some mistakes, (in the Miami game the first two were on the safeties) but overall this squad has far surpassed my expectations

Ooh, you guys are right, this was closer than I thought.

Anyway, the point was just that I'm glad Montgomery isn't playing, which I didn't think was that controversial, but now you guys have got me thinking and I almost wish he was playing to see how we'd handle him. It's exciting to have a defense that you feel can play with anybody.

I am not arguing anything, I was just saying. I know 2 were on the 1st drive....and I think the secondary has performed to my expectations, but Im not quiet as negative as some lol.

dropped passes are part of the game...say what you will, but no touchdowns allowed in 3 weeks indicates there is more going on with the defense, then just a few (or alot) or dropped passes.

The front 7 (and the depth) is solid and for real, the secondary has shown that they can learn on the fly and are gaining confidence with every game. Im not saying ND's defense is the best in the country, but I wouldnt trade this defense for any other defense.
