i was under the impression that the 5 EE's was a university guideline...i would love to get as many in the spring as possible, especially if we finish the year off well and then get the next group in early to continue to build solid depth at key positions.

Wasn't ND behind the curve on the EE anyways? I thought Charlie was the first to convince them it was needed to compete(one thing he knew he was talking about). Swarbrick in an interview also said they are keeping track of those students compared to the general student population as far as their success rates. My guess is it has went well so far and they may be willing to take more now.

Coming late to this party, but about who of our incoming LBs will get the most playing time, I think it depends on whether we bring back Fox and Calabrese, but no matter what it probably won't be Deeb, imho.

If we bring back both Fox and Calabrese, I think Deeb definitely redshirts.

If we bring back one of the Fox/Calabrese pair, then I think whichever of them comes back starts alongside Grace with Moore as backup, and at least one of the frosh ILBs will rotate in as a backup. I expect this to be Anzalone because he is more likely to be useful on special teams because he's a better athlete in space, so it makes more sense for him not to redshirt. Now, if Deeb proves to be the more advanced linebacker, then I think he will play. But assuming they are equal in terms of their knowledge/skill/instincts as LBs, I think Anzalone plays based on his greater athletic ability, while Deeb redshirts.

If we bring back neither Fox nor Calabrese, then I think both Deeb and Anzalone will have to rotate in at ILB as backups. So Deeb will play quite a bit. The question becomes only whether he plays more than any other frosh LBs. We don't lose anyone at OLB, so I don't expect the OLBs to play much, EXCEPT that I expect Shumate to move to safety full time, and Jaylon Smith will take over the nickelback role (or Star LB or whatever you want to call it). So who plays more: Deeb as a backup ILB or Smith as a nickelback? I think Smith.

Long way of saying: I think Philly is right that Smith will get the most PT of the incoming linebackers. I wish I had Philly's gift for brevity.

Not sure if serious?

We didn't have our first EE until 2006. Clarett was class of '02 anddddd he went to OSU.

EDIT: Good read here.

Admissions discusses early enrollment process - Irish Football - The Observer - University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College

Souls of the departed haunt Youngstown - College Football - ESPN

found the article I was thinking of when I asked the question. Did not remember the details since it had been awhile
Clarett had his eye on the NFL from early on. Three years later, in a foreshadowing of events to come, Clarett was on an early recruiting trip to Notre Dame. Standing in the Irish locker room after a 27-24 overtime loss to Nebraska. Urban Meyer, then a Notre Dame assistant, now Utah's head coach, turned to him and said, "Well, what do you think?"

"I want to come to Notre Dame," Clarett announced.

"Well, that's great," said Meyer, startled. "We'll count on it."

"No, you don't understand," Clarett said. "I want to come to Notre Dame right now."

"But ... you're a junior. You can't do that."

"I'll graduate early. Skip my senior year."

"But Notre Dame has never done anything like that."

"If you don't take me," Clarett said, "I'm going to Michigan."

So, according to Meyer, Notre Dame got moving on the paperwork. Then Bob Davie was fired as head coach, putting all plans on hold. And elsewhere, Tressel, Youngstown's civic hero, was hired to replace John Cooper at Ohio State

This is fascinating but someone is remembering this wrong. Clarett's junior year of high school, the year of that overtime loss to Nebraska, was 2000. Bob Davie was not fired until after the following season, the 2001 season, in the middle of Clarett's senior year. So it is blatantly untrue, just on the face of the story, that the reason Clarett could not enroll a year early was Bob Davie's termination.

Most likely Urban Liar promised Clarett that he could EE after his junior year before he knew that there is absolutely no way in hell ND admissions would allow him to skip his entire senior year. Lol.

Btw, very sloppy by the writer ... those are really easy facts to check.

Nice solid hits and a strong nose for the run game. Really would have liked to see more pass defense though. Thats where Manti really stepped his game up this year. I did like the way he fought through the blocks of some of those OLiners though and still got the TFL.

I believe Kyle Brindza would have been able to graduate high school after his jr year and wanted to enroll a year early but ND wouldn't let him.

Height doesn't really affect MLB at the college level. If anything it means that Kelly and the staff like him even more because they are usually reluctant to offer LBs under 6'2"

How tall is he you think? Looked under 6 foot in some of those clips although faster and stronger than I thought.

Is this internally contradictory?

If it doesn't really affect MLB play at the college level, then the height doesn't reflect anything about what the staff thinks about him.

I think your second statement is correct. The fact that he is a little shorter than what you normally look for means that the staff does think really highly of his skill, as opposed to just thinking he has the build and athleticism that they are looking for and they can teach him the rest

I'd be interested to know what his "extension" [arm length mainly] is. That is what's really at play here [to deflect footballs at the moment of truth and keep blockers at a distance to shuck and tackle]. If an MLB has good instincts he has already "located" where the RB will be trying to go. [doesn't have to look over linemen to find them]. You can be "short" AND a knuckledragger --- same as for corners. Height is just an advertisement for likely extension.

Michigan was pushing Brindza for graduate early. It should be in his recruiting profile.

Senior Highlights:

Video: Senior highlights of LB Michael Deeb

Those knocking his speed - please watch. He looks plenty fast to be a very good MLB here.

This kid is one of my favorites for this class, easily. My defensive "sleeper".

It seems like the video is sped up a touch. I was also surprised how fast he looked, but then I watched the other players in the film and they all looked a tad faster than you'd expect--even the towels waving in the wind and the flies zooming by the camera.

Come on, this is $EC country, everything is faster. Sheesh.
