Kansas ball on their own 13 2:34 to play.

1st Crist pass DROPPED
2nd Crist sacked for 7 back to the 6. Holding declined by NIU (Sounds like Dayne and Charlie are both still in South Bend.)
3rd Crist screen pass incomplete
4th Incomplete

NIU ball on downs.

Switching channels ...

Remember how I told you that KU could run the ball? You saw that today, no?

I watched all of the first game. I missed the Rice game. From what I saw in game one, Dayne was who we thought he was (see Denny Green). He has a cannon, is often inaccurate (usually high), and is very inconsistent. There is actually some offensive talent at KU...I know that sounds silly. But, the skill positions are decent.

I wish Dayne the best for him and for my Jayhawks. So far, he's been just okay.

i wish him and this team well as well, will be pulling for them just as soon as the nd game is over

Crist had the tools but didn't deliver. Then there are guys like Johnny Unitas and Bob Griese who were told they were too small to play QB. Intangibles count, and confidence comes from within, not from the coach.

Looks like they are already calling for Dayne's head in Kansas. Charlie won't last their long. Charlie didn't give Dayne a rousing seal of approval either.

“I think that when we go back and watch (the game film), if there’s reason to replace the first guy with the second guy, you go ahead and do it,” Weis said. “It doesn’t make any difference what position they play. I think if the second guy were close enough to the first guy, sometimes that decision would be a lot easier, but there is a big separation between the first guy and the second guy.”

Charlie Wies = not a head coach
Dayne Crist = not a QB.

When I think of Dayne now, I think of:

Man. this bums me out. I'm really rooting for Dayne and Charlie.

Agreed. I think Weiss still maybe able to get some decent talent into Kansas, but it seems like he was left with none. Really surprised and disappointed Crist is playing so poorly though.

Does Weis, with one "s", have less talent than NIU?

NIU's Doern has 2 dozen less wins than Weis. Doesn't Charlie have a schematic advantage over Bailiff and the flightless Rice Owls?

KU hasn't faced OU, UTX, KSU, and WVU the past four weeks they played Div 1aa South Dakota St and won by 14, lost to Rice by 1, lost to TCU, the only decent team to date, by 2 TDs, and lost to the MACs NIU. Gary Patterson should be the only better coached he's faced.

KU's Scoring Offense is rated 102nd against the gimme part of their schedule. Passing Offense is 99th and Passiing Efficiency 116th (only ahead of EMU, BG, Army, and NM).

Oh and KU still has to face KSU, OKSt, OU, UTX, BU, TT, and WVU.

Really surprised and disappointed Crist is playing so poorly though.[/QUOTE]

From the article:

This time, it wasn’t a Crist turnover, like either the late interception against Rice on an ill-advised 50-50 pass or the fumble late in the TCU game with his team threatening to cut the lead to a touchdown. Instead, it was a play Crist didn’t make, a play that looked so easy, a would-be touchdown pass he didn’t come close to completing in Saturday’s 30-23 loss to Northern Illinois at Huskie Stadium.

On a fourth-and-17 play from the 29 with KU leading by three points with 10 minutes left, senior receiver Kale Pick somehow broke wide-open, too open to miss. Crist missed him by a country mile. It almost looked as if he appeared so startled to see Pick alone that he rushed a panicked throw.

The writeups read like deja vu all over again. Just change the name of the opponent. I'm glad he's healthy and hope he stays the way. His performance at KU is comparable to his performance at ND under Weis or Kelly. He had a air mail arm but the correct zip code was always a concern. Is the word "startled" so different from "deer in headlights".

Weis's head coaching skills are questioned from his performance but his skills at coaching QBs is among the best.

Weis had a poignant comment in that article:

I think that when we go back and watch (the game film), if there’s reason to replace the first guy with the second guy, you go ahead and do it,” Weis said. “It doesn’t make any difference what position they play. I think if the second guy were close enough to the first guy, sometimes that decision would be a lot easier, but there is a big separation between the first guy and the second guy.

Kelly took a lot of crap for replacing Crist with Rees and there wasn't a big difference between them (tied for #1 going into the season).

Perhaps Kelly came to grips at halftime during a lengthy rain delay what Weis is dealing with now. Potential versus performance.

Stay healthy these next 8 weeks Dayne, then take your ND degree and turn it into a couple of million in a successful business career or wherever it takes you.

Amen. Not impressed with Kelly. IMO, he messed up Crist....now he's doing it to Golson. ND might have gotten the win, but it was a terrible decision. Can't imagine what that did to Golson's confidence, if he wasn't really hurt. Now he'll be looking over his shoulder waiting to get the hook. Awful move.

I liked the move. I prefer a coach like Kelly or Spurrier that is willing to make a change at a key position in order to try and find someone thats clicking that day. What I can not stand is a coach that realizes his gameplan is not working and continues to get man handled.

Take the punches make some adjustments and play to win!

Exactly. Golson was playing poorly and making bad decisions. I have heard excuses from jitters to too much school work. That is Notre Dame. High academic expections and high football expectations. Next man in. Maybe Golson will see that he has things he needs to work on during the bye week and learn a few lessons this week whatever the reason may be. Maybe that was what it will take for him to mature some. Maybe Rees will also learn something about protecting the ball.

Maybe Kelly is protecting his young star QB by realizing early on in the game Golson did not have it and made the proper coaching move by putting in a Rees (who has shown again why we though the was a clutch guy inititally). Look at it however you want, but Rees has now led 2 game winning drives already this season?

I thought it was a proper move by Kelly. From what I have seen Kelly is managing the games not to lose and we are 4-0 going into a nice stretch of games which we could very well go undefeated into Oklahoma.

Just my two cents

I dont think Crist is a ND guy.

He is an ND alumnus.

He did go through 2 surgeries for injuries sustained under fire while wearing Blue & Gold.

He does now play for KU under the NCAA graduate rule.

So what prompts your provocative statement?

Unless I am missing some very odd usage of the English language, referring to Dayne as not "a ND guy" eludes my understanding entirely. While at ND Dayne was one our best public representatives of what an ND man should be --- involved in all sorts of community activities and getting his degree.

This sort of remark seems to me to be [unless there is an unexpected explanation or some weird typo] to be way out of line. Saying that Dayne was not an ND quality QUARTERBACK, OK; not an ND man????

He was a disappointment on the field. Sadly, I can relate to that.
The spotlight is not for everyone, but from the outside it seemed like he always represented the University very well. He never bad mouthed ND in any way as far as I know... ND guy all the way.
