Before I get run off this site I want to emphasize the question marks in the thread title. Could end up being another wild rumor

The Big East is a sinking ship. Notre Dame needs to get off.

There are more schools in the ACC who are of the same ilk academically in the ACC. Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Miami, Boston College, Syracuse.

It has many of Notre Dame's historical rivals: Pittsburgh, Boston College, Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech. Who's in the Big East these days? Cincinnati, Louisville, Connecticut, South Florida, Rutgers?! Please...

Recruiting. Get that Notre Dame brand in the Carolinas/Georgia/Florida even more. An awesome bonus.

You make some very good points BB. I wonder if they wanted us to come to ACC to try and get the football team in the future.

If this happens then the Big East is officially toast as a legitimate conference if not completely gone all together. They will look more like a mid-major/Non-AQ conference with their mix and mash teams from all over the US.

There goes basketball.

ACC: Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Pittsburgh

Big East: Connecticut, Georgetown, Marquette

With the move of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC, the Big East is no longer king of the hill. Notre Dame's move would only exacerbation the situation in the Big East.

this is cool...bk will be a regular at away hoops games...hehehe

I liked the logic put forth in previous threads for the ACC as our football conference if we ever needed to go...some of the same thinking as Buster mentions...I like it.

I love the idea of ND hoops being in the ACC. My only concern is that IF one day our football program is "forced" to join a conference I think the ACC would be a garbage fit.

It would be a garbage fit for us. However for them they would love ND to join their conference. The only way it wouldn't be terrible is if some other teams came also. But you would have FSU,Clemson, and ND heading that conference.

...and Virginia Tech, Miami. Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Georgia Tech have their years too.

Playing football in the ACC actually gives Notre Dame more games vs rivals than in the Big East....if push came to shove.

I agree about the rivals thing but that's the extent of it. The ACC is one of the weaker, if not the weakest, of the "big" conferences when it comes to football. I'd see them fitting in the Big 10 when it comes to football much better.

I am completely biased since I live withing 15 miles of three ACC schools, but this would make me weep tears of joy. I have no problem with us ending up in the ACC with Football either if push comes to shove.

We have been scheduling ACC football games with regularity the last decade, Wake Forest is not a coincidence. There are a lot of personnel ties to ND within the ACC powers as well that I don't have time to get into.

I mean, look at the map from 2011, add Syracuse and Pitt, then Notre Dame to this map and you have a very large market for an ACC network, I mean recruiting base.

http://billsportsmaps.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/ncaa-bk_acc_r.gif

My only caveat is staying in the opposite division of Duke and UNC, I really don't want to play them twice a year in basketball.

I say bump Maryland to the Coastal division and make ND, Syracuse and Pitt round out an 8 team Atlantic division (plus BC, Clemson, FSU, NC State and Wake Forest). That puts Duke, UNC, Ga Tech, Miami, Maryland, Virginia and Va Tech needing to find another school to make a sweet sixteen super conference. As nice as it would be to swap out WF or Clemson it probably doesn't jive with spreading each division around geographically and balancing power.

I agree that this would be a good move, both for ND and for the ACC. Guessing that there would just be a gentleman's agreement that they will "revisit" the Football side of things sometime in the next few years. No strings attached makes for a good deal for everyone involved.

on the ACC:
upgrade for our lax program
hoops is a wash for mens; downgrade for the women

all that matters (to me-and the ND money men/women) is football....as long as we are independent there.

the acc of 2012 is sorta like the big east f the 90's all over again...lot of ex big east in the acc (BC, Miami, VT, Syrcuse, Pitt )

how many ganes will ND have to play vs acc foes to make this thing work did the article say?
jack cant/shouldnt go past 5 IMO

This is a great move. But I REALLY wish we weren't doing it mid-season!!! We use Big East refs for a ton of our games (including this weekend at MSU) and I really worry about us getting the shaft a la Missouri vs. Kansas in Big 12 basketball.

If this is truly all sports other than football, I don't mind. However, if football would eventually follow, I would prefer the Big 12.

I curious on what this means for scheduling some ACC games each year. I wouldn't mind seeing ND play BC / Pitt / VT / NCSU in a given year. Would love to see them rotate around and play one of VT / Clemson / FSU each year.

Wait, is there anybody reporting this as a done deal or is it just a Twitter rumor?

EDIT: now ESPN is reporting it.
