Bad Playcalling

The playcalling at the end of this game was terrible. The fumble late in the game was as much on Kelly as it was Golson. No reason to try to throw the ball in that situation. They should have tried to run the clock out by running the ball or punt and let the defense try to get one more stop.

The only thing that had me REALLY scratching my head was spiking the ball with 11 seconds left.

It's going to be fourth down. You're only going to have one chance to kick the field goal. Why would you ever give the other team a chance?

Oddly my complaint is that we didn't run more slants or bubble screens. Overall I thought the play calling was fine, not spectacular but fine. The execution was more of a worry to me (I am looking at you offensive line).

Golson fumbled on a designed run. Terrible post.

I could be wrong but I believe there's a ten second runoff on a false start in the final minute of play. If we spiked the ball with 9 seconds left and then had a false start on the field goal we would run out of time. But because the play clock would have been stopped that rule might not apply. Not sure...

You spike the ball to stop the clock, allowing your FG team to get out on the field, and take a second or two to gather themselves, get organized, and THEN snap the ball. It also allows your kicker to go through his normal "routine". I mean, the last thing THIS special teams unit needs is adding the urgency of an about to expire play clock to the mix. At some point, you have to show some faith in your players. You can't coach "in case your guys F it up" safe, all the time.

I dont think that playcalling was that bad, it wasnt great, but I have seen a lot worse. We moved the ball fairly well, but we kept getting stuck with a long field.

There are some questions I have, but unlike 70% of the posters on here, I know that I am not in the ND coaching loop and are not fed all the tidbits of information. A lot of people are making a lot of assumptions. We lost 7 starters and won the game. Thats impressive

The point was that we should of snapped the ball with 2 or 3 seconds left, not 11.

I'd like to say that I've never heard more beatching on this board after a hard-fought win, but I can't.

Let's all take a night to sleep on this, go back and re-watch the game, and then wake up to see the sun's still shining.

And we're 2 and frickin' 0!

We averaged 1.4 yards per carry today. And people wanted to try and run the clock out with straight-ahead runs behind Mikey Golic, Jr.? Think about that for a second, and then bitch about the playcalling.

Everyone has been SCREAMING since the beginning of last season for Kelly to hand the ball to Golson, trust the young man, and see what happens. So Kelly does that, and somehow now it's bad playcalling because a young quarterback made a mistake? You can't have it both ways.

I was laughing after he did that because the announcers were praising every move he made and then he does that to give Purdue a shot at the end.

Kelly is not calling the plays Chuck Martin is.

Expanding on Clashmore Mike's "Wrong" ...

Kelly was asked in a press conference this week if Martin calls the plays. Kelly responded that they have scripted plays and largely run from those. Martin tells him what he sees and recommends plays. But Kelly made it crystal clear, "I call the plays."

Kelly coujld have agreed with every recommendation that Martin made today but if that's what happened, it occured with Kelly's Seal of Approval as Kelly tells the Red Army what the call is. Kelly also could have overridden every play Martin recommended. But as they worked together for several years I suspect it was somewhere in between. Regardless Kelly is the coach that tells the players what to run.

The OP starting whining about the play calling during the first drive of the game and still hasn't shut up. I'd suggest a new hobby if this is what following ND football is like for you.

Exactly! So many experts on what should have been done AFTER the game. Its really pathetic. You have no idea what Kellys job is like until you've done it. You don't think he goes over every play in his head after a game like that? You don't think he regrets mistakes and decisions he's made?
You're a fool if you don't.

People keep saying this, but it's just not true. People b!tch all the time after close wins. All the time. Pitt and BC last year - we had the same type of posts, usually from the same people. Happens all the time. We're not going to ban them for stating their opinion (as long as they stay within the rules, they have every right to state their mind), so get used to it coming from some ND fans. Other boards are far worse. So debate them or ignore them, but they're out for blood, so when they see one small hiccup, they are going to jump all over it...

Haha seriously. I've never understood coming onto message boards or watching a team that clearly drives so much angst in your life. All that horrid, awful, terrible playcalling sure did cost us a win... oh wait.

Kelly adjusted the game plan to fit his personnel and the stout opposing defense. This became even more important as key players kept getting hurt.

To call his playcalling "terrible," is just beyond wrong. Come on.

Golson fumble, someone go back and watch the dvr'd game and see ben koyack completely miss yet another block. This is why Everett was flushed to his left in the first place. pay attention people.

Let's not forget, rivalry games are wars and we won the war yesterday. People forget the heightened level of play ND receives from every single opponent. Props to this TEAM for coming out on top.

I'm proud of our guys. We beat a pretty solid football team and are 2-0! We fought and never gave up even though some of the fans did! How many close games in the past ten years did we lose? A lot! We won and I'm proud the way our team responded to adversity!
