Prayers that Lo will have a successful & speedy recovery. Injuries happen in football, and while I hate it, it's not because of the football side, but for this young man as a person. I am confident in the coaching staff & my only worry is for Lo. If this is his first time looking at surgery he will be scared I am sure. I don't care who it is, when you are getting put to sleep, it makes you nervous.

First and foremost I hope Lo is able to fully recover from this and play for us again. I don't think this is the end of the world though. As a former player that got a chance as a freshman due to injury I do see the positives in this. It just means that a younger player has to step in and compete. Who knows...that player may (and probably will) end up having a great career at ND. Every player that is recruited at this level is able. Some more than other but every player is able. Plus...our front seven should apply enough pressure to ease the pressure on the back 4.

Give Josh Atkinson a chance. He has the speed that Lo didn't. Worse comes to worse, we put Slaughter at CB and Farley at safety. Yes this hurts, but it doesn't necessarily make the situation a whole lot worse since the cb position was already a question mark. At the end of the day, a new guy was going to have to step up whether it was Lo or not. It won't be Lo anymore. Next man in.

I understand the emotion, but seriously losing a borderline starter is not the end of the world. I am hoping this gives the opportunity for Atkinson to shine. I really think he will get the job done. Next man in...

Josh was most recently on the third team.

Lo wasnt a borderline starter, no one else was getting first team reps but him and BJax.

Heart sick for Lo. Losing our most experienced CB is a crushing blow.

Only silver lining is that the players behind Lo fit Diaco's CB profile much better. Might end up being addition by subtraction-- similar to losing Rees in favor of Golson-- if one of them grows up in a hurry.

Lo was not a border line starter. I have heard from more than a few he was having a better summer/camp than Bennett.

Sad for Lo most of all. Hopefully he'll recover fully, but either way he'll be graduating with a hell of a a degree. I wouldn't hate slaughter at cb and it sounds like Russell has been coming on strong. Hopefully Tuitt and Lewis-Moore will force the opposing qbs to get rid of the ball more quickly than last year.

Honestly don't count out Russell from seeing serious minutes this year.

I know you are going to retort that he is a true freshman.

I remember a true freshman from North Carolina leading the NCAA in interceptions. A one Dre Bly. Just saying.

Sorry to go all BGIF on ya, but Dre was a redshirt freshman when that happened.

So does the lack of secondary depth make Diaco more aggressive in calling blitzes or more conservative?

Best way to cover up a shaky secondary is a front 4 that can wreak havoc.

Top 4 NFL teams in sacks last year:
Philly: 50
Minnesota: 50
NY Giants: 48
Houston: 45

Can never have enough pass rushers. To mask a thin/weak secondary you need your front 7 to absolutely cause havoc. You need the defense to dictate to the offense what it will be doing.

That's why I brought up those 4 teams: none had pro bowl or outstanding secondaries, but their front 7 caused enough trouble on their own.

Will be very interesting to see what Diaco does with all this. Man as an Eagles fan, I miss Jim Johnson and his crazy blitz packages. RIP

Unbelieveable. If there is one place that we didn't need something like this to happen at, it's in the secondary. Matt Barkley and Landry Jones are licking their chops.

Nevertheless, we have to move pieces. And young guys are gonna have to step up. Let's see how many of these "4 star" guys some of you were braging about during the recruiting process are gonna handle being thrown in there. I hope their as good as IE has made them out to be.

Time to step up.

We don't have any 4 star cornerbacks on the roster...

The only positive is that we face Navy, Purdue, MSU (with a new QB), Denard and then a bye week in the first 5 weeks of the season. Not necessairly elite passing offenses to break the young ones in. Hopefully by then we will at least stand a chance of guarding OU and USC WRs. If not then we mine as well play a lot of Cover 3 and take the bend but don't break philosophy.

Good God. Not that "4 star" equals stud...I was just using it as an example. But not 1?

Very true on your second point, however, that's just more time for those QB's and WR's to get ready for us. I like the zone strategy....But we're gonna give up a whole lotta yards in those games. Let's hope our offense can score with em by that point.

No, I think we are going to come up with a stud. It may be stud by committe, but we are going to get it there.

IMO, this hurts at the depth of the position, it's not such a blow because we lost Wood, but just that we have one less corner. Yes Wood had so far been fending off Josh Atkinson at the #2 spot, but really, Wood hadn't proved himself on the field yet. He had that one interception return for a TD against Maryland, where their was a screen of some sort and Lo must have been playing MAN coverage and just happen to be in the right place as the QB through the ball directly to him. I hate to see players like Wood who looked to have been promising but to me it's just the next guy in. We knew this position was possibly going to be the weak point on defense, things haven't changed, the depth hurts but not the talent at that position, that stays the same; poor. I think whoever steps in is and will probably do about as much as Lo would have or better, who knows until we actually get on the field and play. You can assume all you want that the oppostion is going to throw all over us, but you never know until it happens.

sonofabitch

This just means our D line needs to ensure the opposing QBs feel enough pressure to force him to make quick decision/inacurate throws and allow our weak spot to be covered a bit

Just like stated above, our pressure on the QB this year can play an important role on settling in our DB's, I think our front 7 saves our DB's from any major hiccups. I don't see how Wood's injury is going to change the outcome of our season, run the ball and don't give up big plays on defense and we can easily win 9 games.

From the season previews their QB doesn't sound like a very good passer at all. I am sure they will still use their normal approach but take a few more shots down field. Let's hope they haven't figured out how to account for Jamoris in the STAR position.

Or too effective in the option..

We need to put this game away early and get some youth experience going..
