I've been as big a supporter of everything the Staff does as anyone as far as I can tell, and certainly plenty humble enough to say I know squat compared to Diaco. But that doesn't stop one from wondering how such a seemingly incongruous move of Romeo to DOG has taken place.
I call the move incongruous in the dictionary definition that it does not fit with anything that we previously knew about Romeo [previous playing position; obvious overpowering strength suited to mixing it up in the meathouse; youth seeming to portend further growth out of linebacker size entirely....]. But it has happened. So why?
One piece of this must be that Diaco knew all along that this year he had only two dogs. Prince Shembo isn't. Kendall Moore apparently isn't. Anthony Rabasa apparently isn't, although I'd be more comfortable seeing him try. Diaco doesn't want to move Fox, or try Grace. Down goes Spond. Diaco now is forced to do something that he hoped he didn't have to do: "invent" another DOG and wait it out until Jaylon [and Mattingly?] show up and we're "healed".
How does he invent a DOG? Well, he has two theories. He can invent a modern "Space Age DOG", slim and fast and great coverage, or he can invent a young version of Prince Shembo and see if the new version can cover space better. Therefore: a Greyhound or a Mastiff. He decides to invent one of each, and keeping his fingers crossed, see how it goes.
WHO to re-invent? Greyhound: Shumate? Baratti? Badger? I thought it would be Baratti, but Diaco knows better; it's Prosise.
Mastiff: Grace? Rabasa? I thought it might be Fox to Dog and Grace to Will, but Diaco's smarter and doesn't want to put two starters [Councell and Fox] at one position. [I'm irrationally just trying to get Grace on the field]. So, he pulls Okwara out of the hat..... Boggle.....
The one thing that both Okwara and Prosise have in common is that they are great athletes who have impressed the Staff with that athleticism. The other thing that they SEEM to have in common is that there was no room anywhere this year for them to play. When I add that up, Prosise makes sense [because I am notorious for honoring speed over bulk]. But Romeo.... I still can't quite get it. Diaco MUST know what he's doing. But I wonder if it isn't just the only thing that he CAN do under the bad injury circumstance, rather than what he'd prefer to do.
