How to block annoying signatures in Chrome

While some signatures are truly awesome, others are quite terribad. Others still are simply overplayed and way passed their prime.

Ever wish you could remove those signatures from loading in your browser? You probably like the poster and want to read his/her posts without their feces on your screen, right?

Google Chrome users, I have made a short tutorial video to demonstrate how to block those annoying sig's with a few clicks of your mouse!

I present to you, Annoying Sig's, Be Gone!! (I recommend using a higher resolution, like 720p).

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/17kF-J2-nvE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Some signatures, like Bob and Doc's (in my opinion) add to the personality of the posters, and by inference, the site. Others are just out of control. But, when you allow a 640 x 360 pixel, 3.39MB animated *.gif it's not only extremely obnoxious on the part of the poster, it slows down page loads and takes away from the aesthetics of the site. Not to mention the screen real estate those suckers take up, instead of actual posts; an effect that can compound very quickly. If you watch the video you can see SLU and Phily's sig's take up over half my goddamned screen.

That's why I choose the solution I did. I get to keep what I want and block the ****** signatures.

I never actually tire of yours Bob, it's just classic! But the point is you, the user, get to tailor to your own preferences.

The sig's that broke the preverbial camel's back are in the video..

By and large, signatures are dumb. What is the point? A one sentence quote may be unnecessary, but at least it doesn't detract from the aesthetics of the site. All the rest of it is just annoying (IMO).

Nope. No siree, Bob. It's a pain in my ***. Along with Philly's Ronaldo. GIFs can be an entertaining thing when used once or twice. In a sig line they grow old, moldy, stinky and toxic in short order. It's annoying to have the damn things take time to load only to have the comment connected to it be "I agree" or some such thing.

I blocked someone who had a fabricated gif of a Bobby Bowden statue being toppled a la Saddam Hussein. It wasn't that I thought his posts were worthless, but the delay wasn't worth it.

I'll drop my Mr. Natural jpeg sig line if that's what it takes.

You know that I appreciate and enjoy your input, but there are times when seemingly innocuous habits fray the nerves.

GIFs, like fish and house guests, lose their appeal after three days.

Agreed... Philly's has to go. First off, soccer blows....Secondly, he does most of his posting in football forums. Why the F*** do we want to see some lame A$$ knock-knee jerk-off footie dope kicking a little white ball......and likely falling 3 minutes later, rolling around like he needs an emergency fibula transplant...........get rid of the Sigs. It slows down the site and we need to hold the high school population to higher standards. Be more creative.

Whiskey's at least is "in character" in some sense. Also, it barely moves, so it isn't quite as jarring to look at. BobD's is funny I guess, but if I'm being fair I could do without it. I like Bob, but I have nothing against Philly or STL, either. This isn't personal, I just don't like big attention-grabbing sigs, especially when they're gifs. And I know Philly takes it personally because I've said things to him before about his Hunter Pence creepshow and one other one he had.

I like all you guys, but if I'm being honest the sigs are annoying.

I've been using Adblock here because for some of you your little "gifts" under your rep and favorite sports teams show up as broken pictures that ruin the screen. I never thought of using them for sigs though. And avatars that I don't like.

Wow that is a great use of this adblock thing. That broken picture thing has been bugging me for a while. Makes the threads off-center.

If someone can figure this out, I'm in! Firefox, too. If I could eliminate the Gif Sigs and keep the posts I'd be a happier camper.

I'm off to retire Mr. Natural. He's tired. He's trucked hard his entire life. He's paid his FICA dues. It's time for him to sit back, sip a little lemonade and take it easy.

Let me be the first to relinquish my signature gif. It was a time, and I largely agree with what's been argued in this thread.

Apologies to Dick for slowing down his mechanism over these last few months. Was rather prickish of me.

AdBlock For Safari is the exact same software (same developer), but for all our Mac Safari brothers and sisters.

Firefox has it's own Ad-Block extensions as well.

First and foremost, I thank you for your most gracious gesture. I also appreciate your sensitivity in regard to "pr" as opposed to "d" ick.

As to "mechanism," I've found "slow, steady and reliable" preferable to "fast, flashy and (one sidedly) efficient.

I, too, as a proud American will stand up and fight the good fight. I always felt pressure to have a 'good' sig. No more I say! Nay are the days we will be bogged down by the idiosyncrasies of the Irish Envy signature block!

Are you not entertained!?

Cheers to Andy in Sactown for standing up to big government Irish Envy!

IMO there is nothing wrong with a sig pic. As funny as the gifs I had in my sig in the past were, they even started annoying me when I started posting more again. At least the pic doesn't move so there are no distractions.

I am an old guy and have acquired a sort of "fated acceptance" of the imperfect in my life, BUT...

My internet service is not the greatest here in Wheeling and so posting threads with multiple MOVING gifs have sometimes even forced me to abandon a thread entirely, as it would not load in any reasonable time. Whiskey's did not affect this as much as the two soccer "moving pictures" nor Bob's. It was when several of these were on the same page that I'd have to essentially give up on the thing and go elsewhere. Would making them smaller help at all? Or even less "dense" in information?
