My 8 year old had his first 40 timed today

My son is participating in a non-contact football camp this week led by his youth football coach. Mostly fundamentals and some fun offensive drills, but they are also timing them in the 40 and the shuttle drill for competition between the players.

Anyways, I'm sure it probably wasn't exactly 40 yards, and certainly wasn't laser timed, but he ran a 6.87. I've been searching the Internet trying to figure out what a typical 40 time is in his age range, and according to one blog post I read, he is about a half second faster than an average 6-8 year old.

I know I'm crazy football dad, but he's deceptively fast and a head taller than a majority of his teammates, so it's hard to tell how his straight line speed compares to the other kids.

Any track stars out there that can share some insight on this subject?

Come on, 40 times mean nothin'!

No pads ... no helmet ...no contact ... no jam at the line ... and mom's pressurin' the timer to use that fat thumb ... blah, blah, blah.

Thought I'd get that post out of the way early.

I use to be able to outrun 8 year olds.

Make sure you get his game tape out to Coach Kelly as soon as possible

This is awesome! And if you think you are crazy, I must be real crazy. My son is 20months old and he now knows 3 pt and 4 pt stances, and is learning rip and swim moves which he is practicing on the whobbly clown toy....too much?

According to YouTube, young Rayne is the fastest 8 year old in the world. How do more people not know this?

I'll time my eight year old this weekend. Not many kids his age can keep up with him when he bears down. I can't dog it as much as I use to when I am chasing him around either.

He did forty pushups last night which extrapolates to 9 reps of 225. Scientifically speaking of course.

If he can throw like an 8 year old boy, he already has better physical attributes than our starting QB last year haha

Just got word that Mack Brown is on a plane headed to your house to offer your son a full ride.

Won't have to prep the tape for Coach Kelly just yet. We are driving north so he can attend the youth football camp at ND in two weeks. Hoping he gets the offer on the spot.

And I threw away the recruiting packet from SC before he got home from school one day. No need to poison his mind.

Smarta$$es. :)

Didn't want to start a new thread gushing over my boy again....

We are driving up to ND on Saturday so that my son can attend the youth football camp on Monday. 3-day camp, gets to run around all morning getting great insight from coaches and current players. Add in a chance to slap the PLACT sign and get his picture taken with Coach Kelly, and it makes for what should be a pretty emotional trip for his old man, and hopefully the start of a great tradition for all of my boys.

Anyone have any history with kids participating in this camp and can share stories would be appreciated. Hope to have pics!

Sounds like you picked out your own Father's Day present.

You might have to stop by Hammes to get a new shirt that will fit that chest!

Enjoy!

If a kid can bench more than he weighs that's a fairly sure sign that he's in elite company on weightlifting at a young age.

The camp sounds like more fun for you than your son; stick close and constantly interact; make it obvious why this is so special --- my Dad took me to see an ND game at age ten, I think, and it was a bit overwhelming... but the campus was unforgettable.

Didn't want to start a completely new thread, thought I'd share that my boy went to ND youth camp last week. What a great experience (for both of us). Got to learn a little football and got a tour of the stadium locker room to boot. Btw, they were selling the leprechaun gloves from last season, if I was carrying cash I'd be the envy of IE.

Players were engaging and accessible during a time when most would probably rather still be in bed. On the last day, all coaches and players involved took time to sign for all the kids. My son got a football signed by Manti, big Lou, KLM, Shembo, Farley, Danny Mac, Carlo, Cierre, Theo, Goody, Bennett, both Atkinsons, Braxston, Kendall Moore, Toma, Motta, Slaughter, TJ, Coach Diaco, Coach Alford, and David Grimes. All were good to the kids and world-class.

Kids were taught some good life lessons, and Rubbed elbows with the Fighting men of Our Lady. Would highly recommend to those of you with grade school boys. An annual tradition has begun...

Timed last weekend in our lumpy arse back yard. I just stepped it off and used my handy iPhone stopwatch app to get two 8.3 second times for my eight year old. I think I'll try again on the sidewalk some other day. Going in an actual straight line on a smooth surface should count for a lot. Slight grade so I'll take uphill and downhill times when I do it. He was all into it since we've been watching a lot of Olympics.

After watching him in action I have to say 6.87 sounds pretty fast for your guy.

I hate to break it to you, but he has to knock 2.5 seconds off there to even have a chance to brag about being able to beat Usain Bolt. Sorry.
