I remember when I was in the 8th grade we got to try throwing the shot in gym class, that is the most awkward and most difficult thing I have ever tried to do. Big props to Hunter on this accomplishment!

Pretty sweet that he won but just over 55' shouldn't win state. KY has some weak shot putters.

Yes and no.

55' is still verrrry good. But yeah your state champion should be throwing 60'+. I'd still rather have winners on this team than not.

I would be interested to see whether Hunter has some form, if he's gliding/shuffling/spinning, or is he's just muscling it out there like a behemoth. If he's just walking into the circle and heaving it, 55' is a good display; if he's using his whole body and a serious student of throwing, then I would have expected 58'+ from him (but he's only a junior and that's just fine)

I just seriously doubt that he's putting in the time to become an elite thrower. He's probably focusing on weight training.

Could we just once in a while have clean congratulatory and celebratory comments when one of our football family has a fine accomplishment?? WAY TO GO, HUNTER!! You are our "Block of Granite" coming for the great O-Line class.

By the way, when Michigan's Mike Martin, last year's strongest man in college football, was in high school, he won the state championship with a 63' throw. The fact that he didn't rival Michael Carter didn't stop him from blasting opponents into the cheap seats, and it won't affect our new big guy either.

Be VERY proud of yourself, Hunter. Almost no one ever wins an individual state championship in anything. I'll bet Coach Hiestand is grinning from ear-to-ear.

That's a fair point, but there's no need to not be honest with discussion. Especially when he says: "I'm pretty happy that I won, but I think I could have thrown a little bit better."

It is all about technique . . . Couching the question; "Is that a really good time for the shot?" Or saying, "That isn't a very elite put", or "The states shot putters are weak," or, " Man! KY shot putters need the jelly!" See, it is all a matter of technique. Ironic how some people can make a post about a recruits technique, without any technique of their own at all!

By the way, I think Hunter is okay. He has a champions heart. I have seen that he is an honorable young man. Oh, yeah, and a giant with some serious athletic ability.

I've shot putted for 5 years and was the field captain in my senior year. Like Buster said 55 is pretty darn good, but again it should not win state. Most state winners are throwing 60+. As for technique, I'd bet he's a glider as most people that do it as there 2nd sport are. What's important to keep in mind is that he is a Junior and if you look at it from that side of things there's still a lot of room for improvement and he may very well throw 60+ next year. Overall a great accomplishment and ND nation should be very proud.

Another two sport athlete (at ND I mean)?

Tough to say. I found some video of Hunter's form,

Hunter Bivin Throwing the Shot Put - KYTrackXC.com

and it's safe to say that's it's pretty amateur. That's great though, because that means that his ceiling is very high. I mean that form is something you'd expect from a second-year guy or someone who is just doing track to get ready for football.

I would expect that Hunter is throwing 60' next year, and that's certainly good enough to earn a DI scholarship in its own right. I guess if he's willing to put in the time and learn the form (even an hour a day can go a loooong way), then yeah he could make an impact.

I guess I look at it like this, I really don't give a **** about his shot put throwing form. Congrats to Hunter on the state title but all this over analyzing on if his throw should have won state or if his form is up to par ocould he could get a D1 scholly for throwing.... I care more about his kick slide in pass pro, and his ability to get off the ball in run blocking and apparently that is good enough to get him a D1 scholly. Let's say congrats to young Hunter for his accomplishment and lets not analyze it to death and suck all the fun and excitement out of an accomplishment that many of us analyst have never come close to accomplishing ourselves.

In other news, I just did a Jillian Michael's workout. Soooo, I will not be criticizing anyone on their athletic accomplishments.

Hunter is going to be a wrecking ball for us.. His offer list says so.

Supposedly OSU related like McGovern. Apparently there are similar ones for McGlinchey as well. Though I haven't actually seen any posts anywhere.

Basically OSU's OL class sucks so their fans think Urban is gonna walk in and steal a few from us.

EDIT: Found a couple posts on Bucknuts about it. There is a very lengthy thread as well but all the posts are OSU VIP.

Will now be back on campus June 14th after talking with Onwualu and Butler (even though Butler can no longer make it, he still encouraged Bivin to go).
