2012 NFL draft picks:

Notre Dame: 4

USC: 2
Oregon: 4
Ohio State: 4
Florida State: 5
Texas: 3
Oklahoma: 7

Alabama: 8
Georgia: 6
South Carolina: 6
LSU: 5
Arkansas: 4
Mississippi State: 4
Florida: 2
Kentucky: 2
Vanderbilt: 2
Ole Miss: 1
Auburn: 1
Tennessee: 1

Notre Dame is noticeably less talented than a lot of those teams. The program has enough talent to get the job done, they need a quarterback.

You can't compare a whole teams talent to one NFL draft.

I'm just wondering which teams you think have the same or less talent than ND out of:
USC
Oregon
Ohio State
Florida State
Texas
Oklahoma
Alabama
Georgia
South Carolina
LSU
Arkansas
Florida
Auburn

BCS bowl game appearances
1.Ohio State-9
2.Oklahoma-8
3.USC-7
4.Florida-6
5.FSU-6
6.VTU-6
7.LSU-5
8.Mich-5
9.Miami-4
10.Texas-4
11.Bama-4
12.Oregon-4
13.Wisconsin-4
14.WVU-3
15.Georgia-3
16.Stanford-3
17.Notre Dame-3

Pretty good that we have only 1 less BCS game appearance than Alabama (who has had approx 30 more recruits come into their program in the past 4 years) and Texas who runs a program that requires no more than a La Z Boy recliner from which to conduct their recruiting efforts. Oh and 3 other points. 1) If ND had Army and Navy's schedule, they would have a slightly different (read better) record over the past 5 years. 2) If Navy or Army played ND's schedule, they would not have the record they have and 3) If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.

Turnovers, bottom line, turnovers. ND was in every game except for Stanford. Minimize the turnovers (you don't even have to eliminate all of them) and they are 11-1 (MAAAAybe 10-2..depending on your thoughts).

If you only eliminated the ones that were the once-in-a-season mishaps, then they are ~10-3.

I have these in mind:

This thread is a headache-inducing embarrassment. People are going to see whatever they want. If you want to be aligned with a know-nothing Andre Ware regarding anything, more power to you.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter where you think the program is or has been. The only thing that matters is what happens on the field this year; and after this year, the only thing that will matter is what happens next year; and so on.

I like the direction we're moving in. While everyone wishes we were moving faster, it probably helps to try to have realistic expectations. I just don't think "realistic" means being overly negative and coming off as an ******* about it.

That's the beauty of it all, everybody has an opinion. From 'expert' analysts to my wife who is not strategically inclined with the game of football as others are. It's a beautiful thing for people to respectfully debate something really and if you get heated over someone disagreeing then:

Some things are as simple as looking at them on the surface. ND's season last year was doomed by turnovers. A lot of those turnovers were Madden-esque glitches while others were done in by a very average QB. You can coach up somebody all you want, until you are red in the face (pun intended) but for some it clicks and others it doesn't. Game plans were fine.

I still personally believed he should have 'dumbed' down the playbook for Crist and kept him in it because he was the physically more gifted QB. Nothing about Rees stands out now and didn't stand out then.

I'll get destroyed for this, but it's how I feel.

3 star players from the South >>>> 4 star players from the Midwest

Star ratings are meaningless for the most part.

I wonder if David Pollack will try to one up Ware by saying ND is actually closer to Carnegie Mellon than to Army or Navy....

Agreed that's why USC and Alabama always get low star rated players and their teams still do well right...

There are examples both ways. What are TCU's and Boise State's recruiting classes like? How about Florida State and Tennessee?

My thoughts are that you should stop watching ESPN when it isn't a sporting event. It's in their interest for Notre Dame to fall off the map, so they will get their kicks in whenever possible.

If Notre Dame is irrelevant then they wouldn't be talking about them. The Irish beat the tar of out a team that made it to the Big Ten Championship, clearly outperformed the Sugar Bowl Champions, and were a Dayne Crist fumble away from beating ESPN's beloved Southern Cal.

Take that irrelevant talk and punt it off a bridge Baxter-style. Notre Dame hasn't put up the critical W's in a while now, and they need to, but you'd have to be the most ignorant of fools to believe that there isn't a sh'load of talent on that roster and that the talent tide isn't rising in South Bend.

I can't think of many examples of a top tier coach, when given good talent, hasn't pproduced the wins and elevated the program. Brian Kelly will do just that.
This 100% and stick a phork in it.

Apples and Oranges IMO. TCU and Boise perform extremely well in regards to how they recruit, but they also only have to show up once, sometimes twice a year.

*I think the gold standard of on the field results trumping recruiting results the last decade or so is Iowa and Wisconsin.

CFL is on now, waiting to see what Ware has to say about ND today.

I agree with everything they just said... nothing they said was haterish...

I especially agreed with the point Cunningham made about the schedule... he said he didn't know of ANY school or coach that would have the ability to hand pick a schedule then go out and put this collection of teams on it... and he's completely right... a schedule made of nothing but BCS conference teams plus BYU and Navy (two fo the better non BCS teams out there) is just stupid.

By definition, shouldn't once in a season mishaps happen...once?

Yep. It's the Law of Averages though I guess.

I have never seen a team have turnover problems quite like 2011. It's the stuff of nightmares.

It's especially bad considering the schedule this year... last year was the year to break through... they can still pull it off sure, but the year to really expect it was 2011... now if BK only wins 6-7 games this year...........

had to have 2011

You might think Brian K isnt the best coach but if you look at ND's Record they are getting better.

8-5 8-5 and if you win 7 games for 2012 Brain K has done his job. You just cant expect ND to compete with Michigan, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, and win. These teams have so many more 4 and 5 star players and it just not a fair match up. Got it keep it real folks, ND is a Big East team not a Pac 12 power house.
