Yup, and talk about an ideal situation for all parties. Manning has probably 4 years left, then either Quinn or Clausen could get a chance to start once Peyton is done, maybe for a year, maybe more, before the long term replacement is ready to start....

The offense wouldn't know what to do without 17 seconds of audibles prior to snapping the ball. For you, I pray Peyton stays healthy. I mean can you imagine: A play executed without audible. I bet Indy's OC just calls a half-back dive every play just in case Peyton calls for a quick snap in the huddle...

he'll be traded once the lockout is over... Carolina has too many issues elsewhere to not try to trade him... unless they want to play Jimmy next year and sit Cam... highly doubtful... Buffalo and others may be very interested... look for the team that doesn't get their QB in this draft

most likely yea...but he shouldnt be too butthurt. I really believe he will get his chance to prove himself somewhere in the NFL....and during that time the CAR/Cam Newton saga will play out, and its my opinion it is not going to end well for CAR.
imagine this:
Cam Newton has a lackluster first season, and then partially into his 2nd lackluster/subpar season all the funny business at Auburn comes to light(maybe NC/heisman gets pulled ala Reggie Bu$h). Look what happen to Reggie Bush when the USC stuff broke while he was at New Orleans (and new orleans was winning at the time) It is going to be worse for CAR/CAM if Cam Newton isnt playing well, and CAR isnt winning when the 'Auburn funny stuff' goes public.
I think Clausen will be very attractive to CAR at that point....after the fact.

Yeah, I agree he will still get his chance but, for the time being, it sucks for him.
Do you think, possibly, that CAR is aware of this possibility and going to keep Clausen just in case?
I think playing a rookie QB is a huge mistake and really makes it difficult for him to be successful. Especially this type of running, Jamarcus Russel type.

Cam Newton will be a bust in Carolina, and most likely anywhere else. Maybe it's sour grapes, but these NFL "experts" are pretty stupid sometimes. Cam Newton is Jamarcus Russell 2.0. Good luck with that. Clausen will make more this season than the rest of us over 20 years, so I don't feel sorry for him or anything. It'd just be nice to have an ND QB look good in the pros for a change.

obviously ignoring what we know now... just from coming out of college standpoint... I didn't think Russell was a horrible pick... it just didn't work out (as many QBs don't)... by that I mean I could see Russell somehow morking out when he was drafted...
it's honestly hard for me to see the same with Newton, especially in Carolina.

From a purely physical standpoint, he's one of the more impressive QBs in recent memory. He just can't hit the broad side of a barn throwing the football.
I can see where Carolina is coming from picking him. Clausen completed like 50% of his passes, only threw 2 or 3 TD passes in double digit starts, and was very hesitant throwing downfield and checked down very often. It's very premature, but people want results.

just to clarify my original 'JaMarcus Russell size red flag' comment as it pertains to Cam Newton:
I saw Jruss before the Raidahs drafted him and every video was him chucking it down the field, thats it. there were no defenders, he wasnt making any reads. it prompted me to look at his college career highlights and I saw the same pass plays over and over. i noticed he didnt survey the defense when he came to line, he didnt make any reads, no progressions. it looked like if the first option was covered, he scrambled then passed it to the flat, and that was the extent of qb skills. Me being a raider fan, I thought holy crap this guy cant play NFL qb. I made sure everyone knew I didnt want the raiders drafting this guy. everyone kept saying give him time, he will develop. his very first pass as a raider was intercepted, and to be honest it got worse from that point on.
so.....the 'JaMarcus Russell size red flag'
here we were pre-draft and I see Cam Newton talking to Gruden and he cant describe what is going on with offense(wtf?). here is a guy who cant diagram a play(huh?), here is a guy that his favorite play is '36'(down right embarassing). where are his qb skills? red flag! ..first overall pick? big red flag!
All the other JaMarcus Russell stuff (not advancing his skills once he got the NFL) I cant say applies to Cam Newton; but the pre-draft red flags I saw with JRUSS are very similar to the red flags I see with Cam Newton (pre-draft)

Don't get me wrong, I agree in many respects, but the problem lies in how effective some of the 1st years starters have been recently, and it's spoiled fans. Now, everyone thinks they should have a first year like Matt Ryan or Sam Bradford, while history dictates otherwise:
Games, TD/INT, Rating
Josh Freeman: 9 games started, 10/18, 59.8
Mark Sanchez: 15, 12/20, 63.0
Matt Stafford: 10, 13/20, 61.0
Peyton Manning: 16, 26/28, 71
Eli Manning: 7, 9/13, 55
Drew Brees didn't start his rookie year, and then in his next two had a QB rating average of just over 70.
Donovan McNabb had a 60.1 in 12 games played (6 starts) his first year.
Some guy named Elway had a 54.9 rating in 11 starts his rookie year.
I could go on and on with players that struggled their first year as a starting quarterback, let alone as a rookie. Obviously, it has a great deal to do with the situations brought in (Sanchez's rookie season was pretty bad in my opinion, compared to the weapons he had around him). Sure there are plenty of exceptions, but for every Roethlisberger, there are two Tim Couch's (not saying all are busts, but I understand some are).
But, as I said, don't get me wrong. Even with as woeful as Carolina was, Jimmy played sub-par, bad even. But I just don't understand how you can take such a flyer on Cam Newton, a player who has questions on so many different levels, when you've got a guy you've only given 10 career starts?

I wouldn't have picked Newton No. 1 overall, but he has a really good skill set and is far better than Russell. I don't like Cam at all, but I think he's too talented to be an utter failure in the NFL.
Russell was surrounded by an un-Godly amount of talent at LSU, and looking back I don't think it's much of a surprise that he fell flat on his face. Things were far too easy for him in college, and despite people trying to compare Newton to him, Russell ran for less than 100 yards and 4 TD's at LSU.
And I don't know if you guys remember, but Newton just ran for almost 1,500 yards in one season in the SEC to go along with 20 TD's on the ground as well.
He's 6'6" 250 and can run a 4.5-40. He's going to be able to make plays with this feet (even if he's not even close to the runner he was in college, which is to be expected) whereas Russell was a tub of lard with his feet and never ever was going to be athletic.
The QB smarts and learning a pro system are definitely huge red flags, and no one should be surprised if Newton fails because so many talented players do.
But I think our hatred for him is definitely clouding our judgement on his skills and talents. Yeah, he probably didn't "deserve" the first pick and we hate that he's probably pushing Clausen to the side, but you just don't see guys like Newton come around very often.
I'd also add that even though he had it "easy" playing in a spread system with huge windows and every team scared of Auburn's running attack, I think Newton is a pretty good passer. Obviously he has a cannon arm, but he has good mechanics, a pretty quick release and not much to hate on as far as that goes. People talk about him being inaccurate and I just don't see it. Every time I watched him last year I came away impressed with his ability to throw the ball.

Picking Cam was a horrible #1 pick. Let's draft a kid because he's got a strong arm and he's fast... Yeah, ok. When's the last time a QB was successful because he was fast? Not to mention, how many #1 overall picks get kicked out of a school? Character Issues? Check... Trouble with anticipation (As noted by Todd McShaw) Check... Inaccurate? Check.

The problem is the Panthers are approaching their problems backwards. They need to build a decent team first, then get a QB. Whether its Newton or Clausen starting, he is going to be a punching bag on a horrible team. My hope for Clausen is that he will be traded to a place like Arizona or Seattle.

He also headed into the BCS title game with the highest single season passer rating in the history of college football.
Just imagine someone claiming an Irish QB sucks at throwing after putting up 66% completions, almost 3,000 yards, and 30 TD's with only 7 picks.
Talk about the Malzahn spread being easy to pass in and the difficulties transitioning to a pro offense in the NFL all you want, but to say Newton is a bad passer is not correct.

oh... and JaMarcus Russell was a terrible pick in all aspects. One quality college season on a STACKED team and a big bowl performace skyrocketed him to the top of the draft. huh... that scenario sounds familiar...

Our defense used to specialize in producing high draft picks on OTHER teams. If we could not make Andrew Luck look like God's gift to quarterbacking this year, I will be one very happy woman.

Currently unemployed because his NFL team is retarded.
He's been to two Pro Bowls. NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
His passing stats aren't great, but his career passer rating is decent. His passer rating the past two years is a very respectable 90.7, and he's run for 1,380 yards and 12 TD's over his career.
Vince Young is a bad football player in the NFL?

I will agree with you that Young is decent and possibly could be great with a different attitude, but as a fan I could care less if a guy makes a Pro Bowl every year and wins any MVP's but if he doesn't win, then he isn't worth it and the best season the Titans had while Young was their, he was on the bench.

I don't think Young is awesome by any stretch, but his winning percentage when he actually played in Tennessee is pretty good.
I agree he has lots of attitude and work ethic problems (so it seems) but he's been far from a bad NFL player.
If some people think Newton is going to be the next VY, they have to realize that's not really an insult like calling him the next Ryan Leaf.
